 - Problems with GCHandle and AppDomains Greetings everyone. I am currently working on a multimedia application written in unmanaged code. As part on my next set of improvements, I would like to host the CLR in the application and allow third parties to extend the application and manipulate internal objects in the application through a "script" interop layer I provide written (on my end) in managed C++. The way my system is set up, from the default domain in my host, I instantiate the script harness using AppDomain::CreateInstanceAndUnwrap method and downcast the resulting object to a common interface that my application and the harness know about. I call a "run" method on the interface. In a test script I created, I register a callback object into the multimedia app. The unmanaged callback object contains a GCHandle to a delegate which it fires periodically on behalf of the unmanaged application based on certain timing parameters. Now, when the harness and my test script used to run in the default domain, everything worked like a champ. Now that the test script is in a different domain, when the unmanaged callback object dereferences the gchandle to invoke the delegate on the script, I get an ArgumentException with a description that reads: "Cannot pass a GCHandle across app domains". I've hit my head against the wall trying to get this to work for a while now with no success. Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  - Localization and multiple string resources Hello! I am looking at .Net localization. I happen to be using J# with VS 2003 but it could be any supported language. The LocalizedHelloWorld example from MSDN and VS shows how to localize a single .resources file. I have not been able to find a way to get it to work. The example loads a resource called "HelloWorld.Resources.MyResources". Each localized version is embedded in a DLL called "HelloWorld.resources.DLL". The trick seems to be that there can be only one such DLL. I have modified this sample and tried embedding two resources, MyResources.resources and MyResources2.resources, and also creating, for example, two French resources, MyResources.fr.resources and MyResources2.fr.resources, into the satellite assembly "HelloWorld.resources.DLL". But, when I request "HelloWorld.Resources.MyResources2" with the culture set to "fr", it fails to find the second French resource and falls back to the embedded MyResources2.resources.  - MSI Installation Using the Visual Studio .NET Installer... In the user interface for an installation, I would like to create a dialog box to take the connection information for a SQL Server database and verify it, before proceeding to the next screen. This means I would need to call code when the user clicks next on the dialog window somewhere. Are there methods one can overload when the user clicks the Previous\next buttons. I think I can generate a new form in the windows installer class to show it and have the user fill it out, however I would like to do this in the VS.net install wizard.  - How does the main thread know when the work thread is finished? I have a window form application. It requires to retrieve data from a web site. Since the web request is very time consuming, so I create a work thread to do the job. How does the window main form (which is the main thread) know when the work thread has finished the job so that it can display the data received on the form? I do not want to use a global variable since if the main form is continuously checking for the global variable, it will not be able to process the window UI events.  - Base Class Prop not hidden to Reflection Hello, I'm encountering an unexpected behavior when using the "new" modifier in a derived class to hide an inherited base class property. I use "new" intentionally so I can change the Type of the property in the derived class, and I can use the derived class as expected through standard instantiation. The unexpected behavior occurs when I try to set gather the PropertyInfo for the derived class property via Reflection. I get an AmbiguousMatchException as both the base class and derived class property implementations are found. Perhaps I don't fully understand the "new" modifier - I expected the base class member to be hidden completely when working with the derived class. I have included a code sample that illustrates the behavior. If anyone could explain this, I would be very interested in understanding. I have the nested property of the DataRelation class set to true.  - DLL, memory leak, handles issues with TCP/IP. Hi, I have an application that uses a dll that we have written. This dll makes use of winsock2.h functions like WSAInitialise etc. all related to opening and closing tcp connections wrapped in our own dll commands. I pass the application handle to the dll.(this might be the issue i think) Problem is i am seeing a memory leak (handles go on increasing) when i run my application using functions from dll in a loop and its being caused by our implementation of tcp probably. However if i use the same low level commands which are interfaced with winsock commands i dont see the memory leak(handles dont increase) Is there something special about working dll and tcp/ip. I read somewhere that you need to create a hidden window internal to dll to post the messages. I hope someone gives me a helpful answer. I am going crazy trying to stop the increase of handles.  - XML Serializer question... Hi, I have an array of structures I would like to turn into an XML string using the XML serializer. The problem I am running into is that I get an exception. Depending on what data type I set the serializer up with (my structure or ArrayList), I get either "Invalid Cast" or "...did not expect type <my structure> ..." Does anybody know how I can do this WITHOUT having to resort to using the SOAP formatter? It seems like a waste to put all of that extra stuff in my xml.  - err.raise inside catch? I would like to use err.raise(x) within a catch block to send an exception back to the calling function or cain of functions. Is this ok to do? I know if i dont use try catch fail in the child function that it will send an exception to the calling function but i want to have error handling in all chain functions. any MSDN documentation on this?  - MethodInfo Invoke - getting source line number after TargetInvocationException Hallo, I have a problem getting the line number of an exception thrown in an executable generated using ICodeCompiler (from a source text file) and then invoked. I catch the TargetInvocationException in Invoke, but line number of where the exception in the ICodeCompiler executable is thrown is missing! However assemblies referenced by this executable can show line numbers (if debug versions) All that is said regarding the code compiled is that the exception was at Main().  - CGI Hi All, I have a slight problem needing to produce a simple application which needs to run as a cgi. Unfortunately due to historical reasons the application needs to be an exe hence the use of asp.net is no good. The problem I have is using a response and request functionality in vb.net for use as a cgi. (Should I create this as a console application?). I will only really need a response.redirect and request.form. Basically going to read information out of a form and process the information then jump to a page depending on the process.  - Strange Error after leaving program overnight I'm developing an application that needs to run 24/7 (its not a mission-critical application, but most of our users of the Win32 version leave the program running continuously.) Last night I did the same, and when I returned I couldn't get the program to resume - the screen was just blank. I found the reason for this when I returned to the VS.net IDE - there had been an exception thrown. The problem is, I'm pretty sure its nothing I can do anything about in my own code. The exception was "An unhandled exception of type 'System.BadImageFormatException' occurred in <mymodule.dll>. Additional information: an attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format". I was running in the IDE and it is the only time it has happened, but this is also the first time I've left it overnight, so I want to do due diligence in trying to find the source of the error so I can address it. I've googled for this error and found many references, so many in fact that looking was almost pointless - this error was apparently around at least since Win95...  - Http stream performance Hi. I'm reading a 5 meg (or so) file from the response stream of a WebRequest, and it's pitifully slow. I mean *really* slow, in the order of 15 minutes to download. Now obviously I'm caching this on the client (Windows app / IsolatedStorage), but I can't have it taking this long to download in the first instance. We've got Gigabit LAN. what's the bottleneck? I could make the resource available via a different protocol / means if necessary to overcome the problem. Has anyone had similar issues or know of a better method of large network downloads?  - Underlying bound datasource not reflecting changes to textbox value until control loses focurs I have a column from a dataset bound to a textbox on a user control, hosted on a form. The control has a Save method which writes the contents of the dataset back to the db through a dataadapter. The hosting form has a menu item (save) which fires the control's Save method(). However, the contents of the textbox are only written to the bound dataset when focus is lost from the textbox. With only one control on the usercontrol, there's nothing else to get focus. Using the ContextManager.EndCurrentEdit method doesn't work - the textbox wont expose the changed text value until focus is lost therefore EndCurrentEdit doesn't know anything about this new value. Ideally need some mechanism on a textbox that for flags a pending update for the ContextManager's EndCurrentEdit to identify in much the same way as losing focus off a textbox does. Any ideas?  - Debugging shared assemblies - symbols not loaded Hi ! I try to "Step Into" my shared assembly while debugging, but this doesn't work for me.... I did the following: 1. Referenced in client the shared assembly as "Copy Local = False" 2. Copied *.pdb of my shared assembly to bin directory of my client (now the client and shared assembly pdb reside in the same directory). When I run my project in output window I can see that symbols were not loaded: 'SharedAsmClient.exe': Loaded 'c:\winnt\assembly\gac\sharedvbnetairvehicles\1.0.0.0__b01c8341480ae057\sharedvbnetairvehicles.dll', No symbols loaded.  - Memory Leak with Unmanaged Objects Hi, I am getting a strange scenario where I am using RCWs for CDO and ADO in my managed classes. When the managed objects get destructed, it seems the referenced unmanaged resources are stacking up in memory for ever. Does'nt GC take of those too? Please note that I am using these unmanaged object references in method level in managed classes, but not at class level. I have tried Marshal.ReleaseComObject method to explicitly detroy the memory trace of the com object, but there is no improvement noticed in memory usage by CPU, and getting higher every minute. I think it is a neutral procedure, rather than good or bad. There is no
problem overall. One potential gotcha, however, with web apps. Sometimes the
supportedRuntime in the config file does not force 1.0 to run under 1.0. In
those cases, you have to remap the 1.0 website in IIS Manager, as it will be
mapped to 1.1. Then, everything works again after installing 1.1.
