    - reflection for plug in Hi all, I am trying to create a plug-in handler that discovers and enumerates my plug-ins at runtime. I've got it working, but I had to defensively trap and swallow a lot of exceptions. Is there a better way to discover if an executable is a valid assembly? Is there a better way to discover is an assembly has a particular type? Please see the code below that I am using to discover types in a directory and add the valid assemblies to a list.     - Event handling (C# vs VB6.0) I have the following code in C# to "sink" an event with an event handler. Obj.OnCallEvent +=new CallEventHandler(obj_OnCallEvent); obj_OnCallEvent being the actual method and "obj.OnCallEvent" is the actual event. This events are provided by a 3rd party Dll. I have converted that dll into a type library and used it in VB6.0 However, I'm not sure how to "sink" events in VB6.0! Please advise what would be a compatible statement in VB6.0 for above C# code?     - Windows .Net 2.0 Application - Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070542 We have installed an .Net 2.0 windows application onto one of our clients PC's and we are experiencing some problems. When the application starts it tries to connect to a database in order to retrieve some information. Given below is an extract of the thrown error:- "System.IO.FileLoadException. Could not load file or assembly 'System.Transactions.............' or one of it's dependencies. Either a required impersonation level was not provided, or the provided impersonation level is invalid (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070542)" We believe that this error occurs due to the permission's of standard clients domain users, as if you log onto the client PC with administrator privileges the application can connect to the database without a problem. This assemblies are installed into the GAC on the PC, other .Net GAC assemblies run on the PC ok. I do not no anything about restrictinng desktops, therefore what restrictions would be within the user accounts to prevent this.     - Are named pipes quicker than just reading and writing to files? Hi all, I've been looking into doing some interprocess communication and have been reading about named pipes. Everyone seems to indicate that if the processes are either on your local PC or at least on your local LAN AND your messages are reasonably small (under a kilobyte) - then named pipes are the right solution. But all of the implementations I've seen seem to just be writing and reading to a file. Is named pipes just a marketing term for regular old file I/O. Here are the two implementations I've looked at: http://www.codeproject.com/csharp/DotNetNamedPipesPart1.asp http://i-d-e-a-s.blogspot.com/ I think the second URL provides a more concise implementation so that I can more easily use the code myself in my own project. As opposed to the first one - which while well architected in design all comes with lots of classes, interfaces and even a prebuilt dll to which you don't have the source. Am I gaining anything by using the implementation in the second URL over just using a regular write and read to and from a file?     - Async UI Calls Block on Dual-Core CPU, work fine on Single Core. Why? I am using the code from this MSDN article http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bz33kx67.aspx Everything worked great on my single core CPU laptop. I then tried to run the .exe on my Dual core Pentium-D at work. The UI becomes unresponsive while the background thread is running. When I go into task manager and change the CPU affinity from 0,1 to just 0, the UI becomes responsive again. Please keep in mind that made the loop longer so that I have time to observe the blocking.     - Async activities from class not derived from Control I want to create a utility class which is defined as follows: public Class MyDataReadingClass { ... } In that class I want to encapsulate all the logic for performing certain SQL Server queries and have the result set accessible from my parent, which will always be a System.Windows.Form object. My problem is that since my class is not derived from Control, I do not have access to Invoke() in my async callback handler, where I would normally pass my SqlDataReader via Invoke to a safe place from which its contents can be accessed without synchroniziation issues. It seems silly to be deriving my utility class from Control when it is not really a control, but I want to be able to create instances of my data reading utility class in different places in my applications.     - System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker runs DoWork handler twice Hi, Using Visual c# 2005 express, I have a Form which utilises a button click to start a BackgroundWorker thread. The thread calls a Soap proxy class, derived by web reference, to consume a web service on a server. Each time it runs, it runs the DoWork event handler code twice! I've tried adding a second event handler in to the DoWork event. That one only ran once whilst the Soap service consumer one still ran twice. The code snippet below is the actual code for the button click, and event handler codes, with the following notes: - all the methods below are part of the Form class - SoapClass represents the web reference derived class. - the actual winform is a simple form with a username text field, password text field and connect button. it's very simple so I thought it a waste of space to post all the form supporting code. Any clues as to why this would happen?     - Hang when new DirectoryEntry declared I am using the System.DirectoryServices namespace in .net 2003. I have noticed some very strange behaviour related to the DirectoryEntry class. If I debug the following code with a break point on the Console.WriteLine line then there is a lengthy pause before the breakpoint is hit. If I remove the DirectoryEntry line then the breakpoint is hit immediately. static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Test"); DirectoryEntry dirEntry = new DirectoryEntry(); } Also this only happens when I am debugging in Visual Studio. If I run the console app on its own there is no pause. The only thing I could come up with initially was that maybe there was a static constructor that was firing, but this didn't really seem to make sense and looking at the source for the DirectoryEntry class I can't see anything that would account for this pause.     - Query Exchange 2003 for valid SMTP Address I am writing an application that needs to email to specific users on our Exchange server and need to query it to see if the SMTP address I will be sending to exists.     - Dowload File Hi, I have problem with downloading a file using WebRequest and HttpWebResponse. Inorder to download this file i need to call to url that tells to prepare the file for download, and then i call to another url that downloads the file.     - DOT.NET 2005 and Crystal Report Hi All, I am facing a strange problem. I have an application in DOT.NET 2003 using the 2003 Crystal Report (Crystal Report ver. 9). Some of my clients want to run the application in DOT.NET 2005 framework. Everything is running fine but while invoking the crystal report it gives an error "Query Engine Error".     - MSBuild and VSTS 2005 Forgive me if this is the inappropriate forum to post this, but I found MSBuild.exe in the framework directory so it seems right to me:-) Also forgive me if this duplicates an existing post. I posted this issue the other day, and it seems to have disappeared. (I have way too many posts not be there when I look for them!!!) Finally forgive me that this posting is not as complete as the original. I've made progress so I've had to leave out the error numbers that were part of the original. Now on to the issue: The MSBuild documentation implies that all you have to do is point it at the proj files maintained by the IDE and it will run. It appears to be even nicer than that. Start MSBuild in a folder with a single sln file and it will find and use it. Impressive! HOWEVER, it may or may not run without modification to the projects. I've had to do both of the following: 1) Add references to a library that was lower in the inheritance stack than those needed by the IDE. The projects being compiled didn't refer to this library, but forms were derived from forms that did refer to the library. (I've lost track of how many layers deep the inheritance of the main program window is from Windows.forms.form. It's a bunch.) 2) I had blanks in the names of icons included in the resources and they had to be removed. This has been documented by others elsewhere. I finally came to a show stopper. I'm getting C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Microsoft.Common.targets(2071,9): error MSB3188: Assembly BLAHBLAHBLAH must be strong signed in order to be marked as a prerequisite. No place have i marked BLAHBLAHBLAH as a prerequite. I'm not using strong signing precisely because "the directions" which i've actually read of a change discourage it for my target environment. I get this error occasionally in the IDE with various of the libraries in the project being the culprit. To solve the problem there, i just zap all the bin and obj folders and rebuild. (I zapp directories so frequently I wrote a program to do it. It's usually because forms get errors when I attempt to display them.) Zapping directories immediately before calling MSBuild makes no difference. SUGGESTIONS please. I have added try-catch block in all methods. This app is running continouously. It was working properly for say half an hours. I am running application in debugging mode. The program is launched from a SQL Server via DTS, and the first thing the program does is read some information from a file (DAT/INI type) residing in the same folder as the exe.     - Personal Web Starter Kit I created my first WEB application from Personal WEB Starter Kit template (C#). I made just minor changes like Connection String and some texts. I created SQL Server database on the hosting server and I uploaded all files to the hosting server. I ran my site http://www.srssite.com and everything was fine. I uploaded 1 picture and tested my site again. I noticed just a very small difference in speed (opening default page initially and coming back to home page from other pages). Then I added more pictures. The speed became more slow. The more pictures I'm adding the slower my site works. To be sure that this is the problem related to the number of pictures I created another SQL Server database on another hosting server and repeated my steps - first run without any pictures (the site is very fast), added a few pictures (the site became slower), more pictures - more decrease in speed. Alrhough I'm a very beginner I suspect that there is some problem with the design of this template. I've read before many times that it's a bad idea to store pictures in a database, but this template is using this approach. Is there anybody who changed this scenario to another one which stores pictures on the drive and their names and paths in a database? If yes, could you give some advice how to change the code.     - Socket weirdness See some strange results on Send and peer with a closed Receive. Setup a test harness. Server accepts socket, then just does a Shutdown.Receive right away and waits. The client socket does both blocking Sends and BeginSends to see the difference in behavior. Results: 1) Using blocking Sends - The first send returns 10, which is the buffer size. Future Sends, return 0 and no exception. This behavior seems not to fly with the doco. The send should block until 10 bytes are sent to kernel mode or throw an exception, *not return 0. Note the socket is in blocking mode (default setting). 2) Using async BeginSend gives completly different results. The first EndSend returns 10 as above. The second BeginSend returns a null IAsyncResult and sets SocketError to "ConnectionReset". I find this behavior very strange. BeginSend should never return a null IAsyncResult as that FooBars the async pattern (it should always return IAsync or exception). It should save the exception for the EndSend call. Second, why does it set SocketError to ConnectionReset, when blocking Send does not seem to care. The two behaviors should be consistent. 3) Also, what is the point of SocketError being an out parm? I have a type converter that is used to create the constructor code for my component. (It is an XNA a Game Component, but I don't think that that has anything to do with the problem because it appears on a Winform) inside another component. For instance I have the following: public class A{ private string s; public string SProp { get{ s = value;} set {return s;} } public A() { s = ""; } public A(string inS) { s = inS; } } By itself, when class A is an object on a form (or in my XNA Component) the TypeConverter code works fine, the property grid on the desinger is fine, if I debug the ConvertTo on the type converter I see that the variable s is all set up okay on the object. However if on my form, I have a List<A>, the type converter works to an extent, as in it will add code to the perform the List.Add(new A("")), however the constructor with the parameter is not being called, instead the parameterless constructor is being called. Obviously, if the input to ConvertTo on the type converter is not set up, then my type converter won't work or display the values the user has put in.
