    - Visual Studio 2005 Versions I just finished up a large project using VS 2003 and am moving onto one requiring VS 2005. I've read up on what is included in the different versions and here's my issue. The Professional edition comes the closest to what I need (ALL the languages, mobile device support & Crystal Reports), but I also need the Office development support in the "Visual Studio Tools for Office" version. I don't suppose the Office development support is sold as an add-on?? If not, has anyone bought both versions and tried installing them on the same computer??     - Pass SessionID from 1 fn to other How should I pass the SessionID(when I logon, I get the SessionID) from 1 function to another in VB.Net. I declared g_SessionID globally, then in another function, I take SessionID as input and use it like this: queryAssetListXml = "<?xml version='1.0' ?>" & _ "<QueryAssetList2 xmlns=""urn:schemas-tms:QueryAssetList2"">" & _ "<SessionID>" & g_SessionID & "</SessionID>" & _ "</QueryAssetList2>" But, I notice that even I get the SessionID , SessionID still remains Null.Any idea?     - FTPWebRequest Fails on Some FTP Sites I posted this problem a week ago, and received no response, so here it is again... While using FTPWebRequest, I have found at least one FTP site where this function fails. The URI I am using is ftp://nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov/md_doc/app_a.doc This NASA ftp site is available through anonymous log in, and other FTP clients, including Internet Explorer using FTP protocols, download the file just fine. As the capture below shows, when FTPWebRequest sends PWD, it receives ANON_DIR:[000000] from the ftp site. Then when FTPWebRequest sends CWD ANON_DIR:[000000]/md_doc/ it receives an error of 550, then it gives up and closes the connection. Any advice on this would be helpful.     - Can one EXE double as Windows Forms app and as Windows Service? I have a Windows service application with a public class that inherits from System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase Is it possible to modify this application so that it still is a Windows service but on the other hand can be started just as if it were a standard Windows Forms application (e.g. by double clicking the .exe file)? Background: I would like to deliver a .exe file to the user who then double clicks it. The application then offers a UI with options to install itself as service. For diagnostic purposes it also would be nice to tell the user "Shut down that service and then double click the .exe" to get an application with UI.     - .NET Framework 1.1 Installation Path Is there a way to get the path of the .NET Framework 1.1 runtime files? Is there an easy away to get his path in an environment variable?     - ManagementOperationObserver and Get( observer ) The following illustrates a problem I have in another program ... however it only occurs on one in 5,000 remote machines. I suspect the cause of the problem lies with the remote machine ... but why doesn't my client time out with an exception ? The Get() method that initialises the asynchronous operation blocks for way too long (I've not seen it give up). Most of the time one will get an error of some sort, RPC not available, Access Denied, COM is stuffed, etc ... but when it hangs it's gone ... and it's repeatable against the machine ... but you have to find the right machine. Needless to say I've got a hugely multithreaded scanner trying to do all this scanning for real ... but when one of the remote machines block this initialisation ... then I'm stuffed. I've unsatisfactorily tried to set up another thread to maintain a timeout and abort the thread if it hangs too long during this method. Note this method doesn't retrieve the data ... merely set's up the operation ... so I believe. I've not verified that the problem occurs in synchronous mode ... but wbemtest.exe does have the same issue ... which isn't a .Net app ... so I suspect this is a COM or WMI server issue.     - .NET Framework data provider for firebird Hi all, I installed Visual Studio 2005 standard and when I click on new connection (to connect to a SQL database) I get: "An unexpected error occurred in the .NET Framework data provider for firebird" I tried deinstalling VS2005 completely but still get this message.     - Cannot read in the keys from app.config (.NET 2.0) Hey guys, I'm stumped! :( I've been trying now for the last four days to read in the settings from an app.config file, but i've failed miserably, at what seemed like a simple task. I was trying to find out how the whole System.Configuration namespace is working. So, I made a simple C# windows application: One form, with a single textbox and and a simple "Load" button. this is what's in the Event handler: private void cmdLoad_Click( object sender, EventArgs e ) { // txtSettings is a textbox txtSettings.Text = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["MySetting"]; } BUT! when i click on the load button, the textbox does not get assigned any value! i mean, nada, zilttz, String.Empy, "" . I set up a breakpoing on the assignment above and i examined AppSettings[] . Turns out the AllKeys member has 0 (zero) dimensions. I was flabergasted :( Following is my App.settings file. I added this file by right clicking on the solution explorer, on the Project name (not the solution name) and then selecting "add new item -> Application Configuration file.     - Socket works fine first time, fails second time Hello all I'm using a bit of very simple code to query a game server using a UDP packet. It works the fine time I run it but then when I run it again straight away it fails with.. "A message sent on a datagram socket was larger than the internal message buffer or some other network limit, or the buffer used to receive a datagram into was smaller than the datagram itself" I reckon it's because the socket is not closing properly so is dtill open when I run it a second time. I have several IP addresses defined on my PC (all bound to the same interface), and i need to send multicast messages from a specific address. How can i bind my outgoing multicast messages to a particular address? Thanks! p.s.: i've seen suggestions to use "MulticastInterface" socket option in order to solve this problem. However, this only affects the interface, via which the messages are sent, but not the address (as i said, i have several addresses defined over one interface). I have a problem with it when entering international text through the IME window.     - Memory leak with .NET 1.1 SP1 My mixed-mode application repeatedly calls various pre-compiled JScript .NET DLLs which generate different sorts of reports (e.g. through automation). This results in a continuous increase of the 'Private Bytes' performance counter of the application and finally ends in a crash after 2-3 weeks of operation. The implementation is done via application domains: pAppDomain = AppDomain::CreateDomain(...); pAppDomain -> CreateInstanceFromAndUnwrap(...) -> GetType() -> InvokeMember(...) pAppDomain -> Unload(pAppDomain); The 'InvokeMember' calls a function called 'LoadAndExecute' in a managed DLL (C++) which itself calls the pre-compiled Script DLLs like this: pAssembly = Assembly -> LoadFrom(...); pAssembly -> CreateInstance(...) -> GetType() -> InvokeMember(...); After the Script DLL has completed and returned control, the application domain for the managed and Script DLLs is unloaded in order to force a release of all involved resources.     - HTTP version compatibility Does anyone know if there's any issues involving versions of .Net Framework, Visual Studio and HTTP which might cause a compatibility problem? We currently using VS1.1 for our web apps (C#) and the app seems to be up and and down quite regularly on production and we're not quite sure why. Our techies told us that because we're (developers) using the wrong version of http, 1 instead of 1.1, which cause some sort of compatibility issues and/or memory leaks...blah blah blah.     - Optimization needed... Is Assembly code available? Hi, I need to optimize a close loop. Usually I would use assembly, but I don't event know if it's available to VB.NET. I'll explain the case and maybe some of you will be able to advise me. I have a byte() (byte array) containing about 100,000 elements (a bit less, but always is around 80,000-95,000). I need to take the data from it as int16 and compare the int16 to a reference value for now, I'm using a MemoryStream created from the byte(), a BinaryReader that reads from the MemoryStream (ReadInt16) and then compare the int16 to a reference value and return false if the int16 is greater than the reference value. if all the values are lower than the reference value, then the function returns true. If it returns after the first loop or so, it's ok, but if it runs through all the elements it's way too long. In assembly it would take way less time than that, because I could move the reference value in one of the CPU's register and leave it there as long as my loop runs and iterate directly in the byte() to get 2 bytes at a time. In VB.NET it's a function that stands in about 10 lines of code (maybe even lower), but it takes up to 50% of the CPU (when looked in the task manager) which is way too much because it runs very often. When it does not run (many other things are running in the app), the app takes about 1%-2% of the CPU, when this close loop starts being called, the app get's to 30%-50% of the CPU... it's a bit excessive due to the fact that the function is called about 8-10 times a second. thanks for your help ThunderMusic Tag: Dot Net Focussed Search Tag: 112052

    - Framework Unregistered after Reboot Hi, There are three workstations in the group where I work that are constantly having the .NET framework uninstalled if we reboot. In order to get the local ASP.NET applications running again we have to run aspnet_regiis -i and iisreset. The question is what could be causing this? There is group policy in effect, perhaps Active Directory could be causing this? Any recent viruses that would cause this behaviour? I did a full scan that turned up nothing... This is what we are doing, in our VB.NET Project we have an MDI form, and a child form class called frmConfigBrowser. We instantiate this base class twice, using declarations like this in the MDI form: private withevents frmConfigEditor as frmConfirgBrowser private withevents frmConfigBrowser1 as frmConfirgBrowser When the user clicks the menu item to open a data file for editing, we instantiate the first variable, when they select to open a file for reading, we instantiate the second variable. But form events are only recognized for the first one we load... so clicking a listbox on the first one changes another listbox, but a click on the listbox of the second form loaded is ignored. The problem is that i do not know how to propagate the Object Context from the Main thread to the 2 subThreads.     - MyApplication has encountered a problem... when not Administrator! Hi, Something strange is happing with my Windowf Forms application (VB.NET 2005): The users had all local Administrator-rights on there pc. We changed it to the 'normal' users, and now they can't run our V.NET application anymore! The application starts (you can see the screen and caption etc), and than they get the well known error "MyApplication has encountered a problem and needs to close" with the "send error report"-button etc. When we change their rights back to PowerUser ou Administrator, it works again... Does anybody get any idea why this happens? And how to find a solution? Do they need some special rights on something?     - gradual slow down Hey guys... I have a question regarding performance of windows forms.. Is it normal behaviour for a windows form to gradually become slower and slower as more stuff gets loaded? I have a tab control on my form which when the user selects a tab i dynamically load a selection of controls to go onto the tabpage.. I have monitored this with the QueryPerformance API and the results show that as more controls get loaded and place onto the form, it starts to slow down dramatically, 3 times slower plus then the orginal time. Could I be doing something wrong or is this the way windows forms works... I understand why it could slow down, but i ened to know a way around it... (My process at one stage was taking up to 30 seconds to generate content... I have since revised my structure and got it down to approx 4-5 seconds... I still need it faster... I would like almost instant.... My times now start out about 60 ms per each control group (being about 6 controls of labels textboxes and checkboxes and a selectlistbox) and then by the end (about 6 groups) is upto about 300ms. these controls arnt "grouped" as such but are just controls in a particular section of my form. I am using vs2005. The tab control has a panel as the main container which all the controls go in. (this panel stays small until the end of the generating process, then a resize the panel.) I set "e.HasMorePages = True" after completeing the first page in the "PrintDocument1_PrintPage" subroutine, and then "exit sub".     - Consuming COM-Objects built as .NET assembly Hello! As we use .NET technology to build our applications, we also create several components using it. To be able to use the components in unmanaged applications, we expose the public interfaces to COM. On my workstation, I have .NET 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 installed. We now found out, that the .NET runtime always loads the latest version of itself, if any .NET based COM object is created. We know, that there are ways to force the loader to use a specific version of the runtime, but the following topic is not completely clear: Somebody offers a COM object developed using .NET technology and builds that using one of the available runtime versions (lets say 2.0). Another guy, offering another COM object builds that using version 1.1. A third guy builds an unmanaged application using both COM objects. Lets say, the application has two functions, A (using COM object 1) and B (using COM object 2). If the user activates A before B, COM object 1 gets created first, and runtime version 2.0 gets loaded into the process. So, COM object 2 will be executed with runtime version 2.0 too. If the user does it the opposite way, COM object 1 will be run with runtime version 1.1. Thats the way I think it would be! I know that the best way is to ensure, that all used COM objects are built with the same runtime version, but what if you don't have a way to do that!? I know there are tables just cant see them. When I set up an ASP site and connect to the SQL with DNS all tables are visible. I have spent a whole day on this tried everything.     - TypeLoadException I try to run an executable (test.exe) that depends on an assembly (AdderNamespace.dll) which exists in the same directory, and I get the following exception: Unhandled Exception: System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'AdderNamespace.Container' from assembly 'AdderNamespace, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'. at AdderNamespace.Factory.New() at addertest.Class1.Main() ILDASM reports that the offending type AdderNamespace.Container indeed exists. It's public. I have full access to the assembly file, and the version number of the file matches the one in the error message. Some of the DLLs the executable (indirectly) depends on have probably been built with .NET 2 beta, and I'm now using the release version. I also have 1.1 installed, though I think 2.0 is the one being used (I notice disk accesses to \WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 rather than the folder for 1.1) What could have gone wrong, and how do I fix it? Interestingly if I put a Thread.Sleep in the main thread before ts.Complete() the open works ok and the transaction is promoted. This seems to suggest that the ts.complete is doing something to the transaction to stop the second connection enlisting. However I thought that the whole point of the BlockCommitUntilComplete option is to stop the root TransactionScope committing until any DependentTransaction processing is done. Also, if I open another connection in the main thread (therefore promoting the transaction) before I start the second thread then it also works.     - Looking for a book on writing ASP.NET Controls with VB.NET I am an ASP.NET developer who would like to start learning about writing ASP.NET custom controls using VB.NET. I already have a reasonable amount of knowledge with making ASP.NET pages, and am looking for a book specifically on writing controls. Here are some things I would like the book to talk about and my preferences as to how I would like it to be shown/explained: 1. I want it to use VB.NET for the examples, since that is what I write all my sites using and have experience with. 2. I would prefer that the book use many examples, because I feel I learn better when I see examples. 3. I want to know how to make the different properties be either displayed or not displayed in the Visual Studio .NET Properties Palette, as well as other things that affect the appearance in Visual Studio .NET. 4.     - Converting the time from one timezone to another I asked a question about a week ago about how to get my local time, since my application is running on a server halfway around the world. I have determined that my code would look something like this: Dim servertime As Date = Date.Now Dim utctime As Date = servertime.ToUniversalTime() Dim localtime As Date I know that the last step would be to adjust the utctime value by the appropriate amount using code such as utctime.AddHours(-5), but I am looking for a way to get this value by supplying the timezone rather than an offset (in other words, I am looking for a function that returns either a System.TimeSpan or Integer when I enter the timezone) so that I can do something such as utctime.AddHours(GetTZOffset(TimeZones.EST)) Is there a function that does this, or any way to get the offset by submitting the timezone?     - TypeBuilder.CreateType() error I'm attempting to create a type with Reflection.Emit that is a subtype of an already defined type. If I just declare the class as derived from the base type and execute CreateType() it works fine. But if I add a method, CreateType() throws a TypeLoadException with the message "The signature is incorrect." What should I be looking for that causes this error? I believe that the IL generated for the method is correct (I essentially copied it from a disassembled function generated by the compiler). I'm kind of stumped as to what's going wrong.
