How can I use sDllToCall to declare an object?     - Yes, you can install .net updates After encountering an update problem relating to both versions of Microsoft .net framework, I happened to visit windows update newsgroup and dotnet newsgroup and found every other person was having this problem. Incidentally this problem had happened with them after they had installed xp sp2. After a lot of browsing on Google and Microsoft knowledge base articles, I found the only solution to the problem was uninstalling both versions of .net and reinstalling them again. Interestingly sp2 had done enough damage to not allow repair of these programs. Now uninstall was another bigger problem, but thanks to the following knowledge base articles: - 1) Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 320112 --- For removing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0.3705 2) Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 824643 --- For removing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 And then I got stuck on using Msizap.exe utility, which wanted me to download Microsoft Windows Installer Software Development Kit (SDK). I accordingly went to the site for the download but found out that it was a pretty big job as it included other compulsory downloads. I failed after numerous tries to download as the site didn't allow using any download managers and using dial-up for huge downloads is definitely a problem. And then I searched for Msizap.exe utility on the net after I found out that sp2 supported this tool. I found it here: - Referrer http://www.google.com.pk/search?q=cache:7Iu8UFkOULQJ:www.extorr.com/software.htm+download+Msizap.exe+&hl=en I then used it separately for both the versions of .net (as you can also find different commands for both versions in the above referred knowledge base articles) A reboot and again the installation failed (I was attempting install from the newly downloaded redistributables) And then I attempted a repair from the run command also mentioned in these knowledge base articles, after which, interestingly enough, the installs (both) succeeded. Another visit to the windows update site followed and the updates completed successfully. I am happy that I am out of this quagmire but I wonder how many other problems sp2 will unfold in future. For those who are prompted for the location of netfx.msi after trying to install .net, they can extract it from dotnetfx.exe and then browse to that location. To do this, download dotnetfx.exe or locate it on your local hard drive or a CD. Then, from a cmd prompt run the following: c:\dotnetfx.exe /t:c:\temp /c. You can substitute any folder you want for the "c:\temp" parameter. This will extract netfx.msi to c:\temp. I hope this helps. Tag: SP1 Failure To Install Tag: 82221

    - Memory consumption in the .NET framework Hi, this may be a simple question and I'm sure it's answered somewhere in the docs, but I haven't found it so far. When running a simple .NET application, Task Manager reports that it needs about 10MB RAM. Depending on what libraries are used, this may be more or less. This is what I expect for the first time, because the .NET framework libraries are loaded into memory. Now, when starting the same app several times, Task Manager reports 10MB RAM usage for each started process, which I don't understand. I have two explanations for it: 1. Task Manager does not report the correct memory usage 2. The .NET framework libraries are loaded into each process So far, I haven't cared about it, but I'm developing a product consisting out of some standalone applications, Office Addins, Smart Tags, Smart Documents, Local Web Services running an Office Research Provider and so on, so 5 - 10 processes will be started. If the .NET Framework is loaded into each of these processes, it will need 100MB of RAM or even more just for copies of the Framework. Is that a correct assumption?     - Support for other numbers than "english"... Hello, we need to deliver or C# prduct to India... But they do not have our numbers (0-9) instead they have some other "symbols". Is there any support from the int.ToString(CultureInfo) to support these "numbers" !?     - Threading problems with COM Interop I am using a third party COM componenet which is not thread safe in a .Net web application using Interop. When two threads (two requests) are trying to access the componenet it is giving an error and crashing. It works fine if the request is made only one at a time.     - Need help passing multiple arguments to an external executable. This is a very simple question, but cant figure out a way to do it. I want to know how to pass multiple parameters as arguments to an external process. I want to call an exe with following arguments :- MyApp.exe "C:\Some Directory\File.txt" /A /T . But the Process.Start or the StartInfo.Argumnets only let you give one string as an argument. Therefore it is not possible to pass a set of arguments like I want (one argument having double quotes). When I pass the above in one string the argument is given as "C:\Some Directory\File.txt /A /T" to the application which is wrong (the application take it as a one parameter and tries to treat is as a file).     - 1.0 SP 3 & SecurityException I have an application which is a EXE running as an NT service. It accesses an assembly (a1) which in turn accesses types defined in another assembly (a2). All was fine before SP3. Once SP3 is installed, I'm getting SecurityException whenever a1 wants to access types in a2, getting "Request for permission of type xxx failed". Everything is installed local so they all have FullTrust. One more piece of information. The types in a2 are all enumeration if that makes any difference. I caught the SecurityException and examined it, but it didn't give me much information. The PermissionState property is empty and PermissionType is null.     - Net Framework 1.1 SP1/VS.NET 2003 SP Question When I do a windows update I noticed that the Net Framework 1.1 SP1 is available. The question I have is, does that mean that there is a SP available somewhere for Visual Studio.NET 2003? I would think that a SP for both would be required if there are changes to the Framework! I found several early articles on the internet which seem to support this belief; and stated that both the framework and 1.1 service pack were being coordinated with XP's SP2 rollout.     - FolderBrowserDialog does not display the directory structure after installing .NET Framework SP1 It only contains the buttons to create a new folder, Ok and Cancel.     - Is AxImp broken in SP3? Hi, I'm experiencing problems with AxImp.exe since installing framework 1.0 service pack 3. When I try to run AxImp I get: AxImp Error: Invalid Primitive Type: System.Reflection.Missing. Only CLS compliant primitive types can be used. Consider using CodeObjectCreateExpression. If I run AxImp with the /source option I get: AxImp Error: The process cannot access the file "....cs" because it is being used by another process. The errors only occur for one of our OCXs, the others work fine. It definitely seems to be related to the service pack. If I reinstall the framework it works, but if I then install SP3 it breaks again. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Is there a fix or workaround?     - Types vs. Attributes We want to be able to load the classes from a directory that derive from a particular base class. So the question is whether attributes for each deriving class will help us in finding these classes faster or not? We currently have attributes and use those, but it seems very slow to go through all the assemblies and try to get all of the attributes from there.     - Access to installation files from Custom Actions class. Hi all, Is there a way to get the path to the temp directory where installation files are unpacked to? Also is there a way to specify in a deployment package that a file should not be installed anywhere but simply included into the package? E.g.     - Reading data from a Socket I have coded a method which reads data from a socket in chunks of 2048 and concatenates those chunks into a string before returning the string to the caller. Almost all the time this code works perfectly well. Occasionally, for a reason I've yet to determine, the returned string seems to be truncated at 2920 characters. This causes problems in another part of my app because the string is Xml, which then fails to be loaded into an XmlDocument object.     - Problems with XP style in Windows forms after installing .NET 1.1 SP1 Hi, after installing the SP1 for the .NET Framework 1.1, I have one Windows form that does not display the push buttons in XP style anymore. It worked without problems before and all other controls still have the XP look and feel. Just to make it sure, I verfied that the FlatStyle property is set to System and since yesterday the application looked great. Now it's poor because of a mix between the XP and the classic Windows style. I have other applications that still show the XP style buttons and I'm using the same technique in all applications (as described in KB830033, which so far worked perfectly in COM Addins and in native Windows applications too). Furthermore, I put the classes listed in KB830033 into an assembly that resides in the Global Assembly Cache, so I'm really using the same code in all applications. I don't see any reason why this single application does not display the XP buttons, but it definitely happened after installing SP1. I'm running Windows XP SP1 with all important hotfixes, but have not yet decided to install SP2. Does anyone encountered the same problem and may even have an idea how to fix it?     - sqlserverCE sdf Hi Is there a way to generate a sdf -file on a PC, and move it for the SQLServerCE -device for usage there? I've got aprox 100 000 records to insert to the sdf -file, and have built a webservice for fetching chunks of records, inserting it to the sdf. This process takes hours. I guess overhead in Webservices to be the cause, and figure a TCP sollution would speed things up. However, doing all of this - serverside would be the quickest I'm sure.     - dll's in VSNET2003 Compact Framework not registered Hi, After reinsalling VSNET2003 to a new path on my harddrive, the dll's in the Compact Framework are nor re-registered. One of my coworkers experienced the same problem with uninstalling and thereafter installing VSNET2003 to a new path on the harddrive. It is the VSNET2003 installation that "forgets" to re-register the Compact Framework dll's to the new path. His only solution was reinstallation of winXP and thats not an option in my case. OS: Windows XP + SP1a + alle updates I have tried: - uninstallation of VS NET 2003 + manual clean up + installation again - repairs of VS NET 2003 - extern installation of NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP2 - gacutil - but couldnt locate the Compact Framework... - MS RegClean.exe to secure clean up after uninstallation. That provoked Bluemoon!! I cant spare much more time in investigating why this happens, and are quite new to VSNET.     - Question about Enumerations When I use enumerations I frequently get compilation errors that state: "Inconsistant Accessibility: <something> is less accessible than <something> I have been getting around this through casting but really don't like that since it defeats enumerations. When I define an enumeration, I place the definition within my namespace. I have even tried placing the enumerations in a seperate .cs file called enumerations and this doesn't help either.     - Max Length on ProcessStartInfo.Arguments I have noticed that when I try to run a process using ProcessStartInfo to set a really long argument, over 33,000 characters. The whole string doesn't get passed into the process being started. Specifically I am using the System.Diagnosis.Process class to run csc.exe and compile our software product because we have a solution with over 170 projects and it takes 40 minutes to load and build in visual studio. But by parsing the solution and project files I can build it in under 5 minutes with a custom written app. The only problem I have is a couple of projects have so many files in them now, when I create the compile string it cuts off the end of it before starting csc and so that specific project doesn't run. For various reasons we have a legacy VS 6.0 C++ application that we would like to compile with VS .Net and without the /clr switch and using the COM interop use the XML features available in the .Net Framework. Since we are new to .Net we need a cookbook method to expose Ssytem.XML as COM object and then add it to our VC++ project.     - Accessing POTS modem through framework? Is using an analog modem simply a dead art form or is there still functionality within the .NET Framework for accessing a modem on the computer, sending AT commands and sending/receiving character data?     - Metafile problem I am having a problem using DrawImage to scale metafiles.     - Resource Sharing I have noticed that successive calls to ResourceManager.GetObject with the same paramters return references to different objects. This is fine when a resource is only being used once (at a time) or when an application intends to edit the returned object at runtime (and each resource consumer needs it's own copy to edit). Unfortunatly, this is a major problem when you need to share resources. For example, I would like to use embedded resources for textures of objects in my C# based 3D engine. If several objects use the same geometry, textures or other resource, they should all share a reference to the same resource object. Is there functionality in the .NET framework for shared resources?     - Failure to install .Net Framework 1.1 sp1.... I was unable to install the sp1 download for .net Framework 1.1. The IE window reloaded as if all was fine but was simply given the info "was not able to install". I then downloaded the executable for the patch and tried installing it manually. The windows installer window popped open and tried to load got about 4 bars lagged for a while than it closed and I recieved the the info "windows installer could not be accessed......". Went to install "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1". During
install, had pop-up declaring failure to install one of the mscor*.dll
files. Clicked OK. Install then hung. Used Task Manager to kill IE. Restart
IE. Now install will not even start. What to do? Thanks.

System seems ungodly slow, especially OE 6.0, since WinXP SP2 installed.
