    - Unable to Impersonate user exception Hi, I would like to know the possible causes for the security exception " Unable to impersonate user" I have .netframework 1.1 on my machine. The scenario is as follows I have multiple worker threads running and which are impersonating. These threads are not spawned from an impersonated thread. through some of the postings I got to know that the possible cause can be 1. A main thread and a worker thread impersonating at the same time.- this is not happenig in my case 2.     - Unexpected interaction of ValueType, Reflection and ref parameter I posted a question yesterday under the Subject "How can I copy a value type dynamically without knowing the type". Unfortunately, I did not tie the problem down to a real code example. After further investigation, though, I have managed to create a real example of the problem. My original question was how to create a copy of a Value Type dynamically so that it does a copy-by-value rather than copying a reference to the same boxed object. The answer given was simply to use the code shown below as 'CopyValueType', which worked in all of the simple examples shown. This confused me for a while until I discovered that the code which was subsequently manipulating the variable was using reflection to call a method and passing this variable as a ref parameter. This combination shows the problem, as demonstrated in the code below. static void Main() { int i = 0; Process(i); } private static ValueType CopyValueType(ValueType i) { return i; } private static void Process(ValueType i) { ValueType j = CopyValueType(i); Console.WriteLine("Original i = " + i.ToString()); Console.WriteLine("Original j = " + j.ToString()); OtherCode(j); Console.WriteLine("i is now = " + i.ToString()); Console.WriteLine("j is now = " + j.ToString()); Console.Read(); } private static void OtherCode(ValueType x) { MethodInfo method = typeof(Class1).GetMethod("Update", BindingFlags.Static | BindingFlags.NonPublic); method.Invoke(null, new object[] { x }); } private static void Update(ref int v) { v = 1; } If you execute this, you get: Original i = 0 Original j = 0 i is now = 1 j is now = 1 As you can see, both i and j have been modified by the call to Update via reflection - so the return value from 'CopyValueType' is clearly not a completely separate copy from the input parameter, but must still be a reference to the same original variable. My requirement is to be able to implement the 'Process' method above without having control of the input parameter (except that it is a ValueType) and without knowing what code is in the 'OtherCode' method. The requirement is simply to make a copy of the input variable and pass it on in such a way that the subsequent code cannot modify the original variable. So I think I'm back to my original need for an implementation of 'CopyValueType' that creates a copy of the input parameter rather than a reference to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Threads, lock, many readers, one exclusive writer Hi, I am so far familiar with the C# lock keyword, which I understand prevents any other thread from entering the portion of code which is locked, assuming you are locking the same object instance. I have a cache of data which initially I locked when I write to it, and I locked the same object for any reading.     - Installing Duwamish 7.0 error Newbie question here. I'm trying to install the Duwamish 7.0 C# example but the install fails immediately with the message "You must install the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK v1.0.3705 before running Duwamish 7.0 (C#). The thing is, I have v1.1.4322 SP1 of the .NET Framework installed. So am I doing something wrong in the install? I'm just clicking on the Duwamish.msi file to install.     - Netscape browser caching problem I wrote a Web Application that works the way it should on IE but has a little bit of problems on Netscape Navigator. When using IE, clicking the back button will cause the browser to redisplay the current page not allowing my database to get corrupted by doing the following. Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache); Always Response.Redirect(myself) on any event. In Page_Load() check it the current is the PostBack page and if not, Response.Redirect(current page). By doing the above, IE works perfectly and backups never occur. However, it appears that Netscape Navigator does not purge the browsers cache so I don't get a PostBack to the page that I backed up to allow me to redirect it back to the current page. This doesn't cause any database corruption problems because as soon as someone enters data in the backed up page and issue a post, the backup page will receive the post and realize that someone is operating on the wrong page and will redirect back to the current page restoring the application to the correct state. However it's messy if someone uses the back button when using Netscape Navigator. I've tried every possible fix that I could find on the Internet including Meta tags and javascript but Netscape Navigator will not issue me a postback when the back button is clicked.     - Stepping through application while debugging is incredibly slow I have a ASP.NET application that I'm trying to step through. Each line of code takes about 3 seconds to execute as I step over it while debugging. It doesn't matter if it's a method call or a simple variable declaration, it's incredibly slow. My watch window is empty. The variables in my locals window are all collapsed. This problem just started. There were no major changes to the application when this occurred. Any ideas?     - mscorlib.dll problem? We are using sqlite3 for local data storage for our applications. And I ran into this problem today: When calling one of the sqlite3 functions, the following exception occurs originating from mscorlib.dll: "Resource lookup failed - infinite recursion detected. Resource name: Arg_NullReferenceException" The wierd part is, this function that triggers the exception is called hundreds of times before and works with no problems. And about half the time, the problem won't occur at all, the other half, the above exception will occur( if in debug mode), or if in release mode, the application will simply hang. Any suggestions?     - Fully trust digitally signed assemblies Hello all, Im posting this question to this forum as well hoping to find an answer. I had previously posted to the .net security forum but have not gotten a response yet. Here is the problem. I have an isolated network where I am not connected to the web. I'm using some digitally signed assemblies in my .net application and am running the application from my local drive. Im signed in as admin to the machine. With Windows 2k, sp4 and .net 1.1. I notice unusually long loading times when using the digitally signed assemblies (10+ seconds) and I can see that whenever I launch the app, some network activity is generated. There are some queries to crl.thawte.com made and the form loads up. Normal loading time is supposed to be about 1 second. I have tried using the .net config tool to give full trust to the publisher, the assembly and so on. But it seems like the .net framework always like to walk the certificate chain everytime and in doing so needs to be connected to the net. Otherwise, the timeouts just end up delaying the loading of the assembly. If I am running the app from a fully trusted location, why would the framework need to keep validating the certificate and look up the crl? I though this would only happen if I'm downloading the app from a url link or running it from a network. How do I fully trust a publisher so that I do not get these delays? Can I somehow force the framework to reduce its timeouts? Or to not check for crl's online? Can I install something locally on the system so that it does not require network access to load the speedy fashion? Is network access a prerequisite to using digitally signed assemblies ?     - http header Proxy-Connection not set to Keep-Alive by setting HttpWebRequest.KeepAlive to true Hi All, I'm trying to track down why my application built on HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse fails to successfully log onto and access some web resourses, while IE does so without problem. The sequence of requests and responses culminates in a page for IE but in an exception for my application of type 'System.Net.WebException': The remote server returned an error: (504) Gateway Timeout. Using an http sniffer (Ethereal) I can see that IE is setting the http request header "Proxy-Connection" to "Keep-Alive" while my application does not send that header. Yet for each new request I make I include the line of code: request.KeepAlive = true; Any pointers as to why setting my HttpWebRequest's KeepAlive property to true is not resulting in the "Proxy-Connection" header being set to "Keep-Alive"?     - How can I copy a value type dynamically without knowing the type. I need to be able to dynamically create a new copy of a value type without knowing the type at compile time. i.e. I need to be able to write a method such as: ValueType MyMethod(ValueType data) { return copy-of-data; } which returns a new ValueType that is a copy of the 'data' parameter. Returning the 'data' parameter itself is no good as it returns the boxed value which is passed into the method, and therefore references the original variable.     - Single instance application using remoting errors Hi, I am experiencing an issue with remoting trying to implement a single instance app behaviour required for our application. I am using the MS best practice recommended solution of using Remoting and Mutexes to provide this behaviour. In simple terms this is the process: 1. The application's Main() method creates an instance of a SingleInstanceHandeler class (code attached). 2. The Main() method then calls the Run method on this class. 3. The Run method creates a unique key for this application (user and workstation specific also) and attempts to lock a Mutex for this key. If it succeeds this is the first instance. If it fails it is not the first instance. 4. If this is the first instance a remotable version of the SingleInstanceHandeler is registered and a channel created to listen for requests. The OnStartup event is then fired, passing the command line arguments, which is handled by the class in which the application's Main method is contained. 5. If this is a second instance, a connection to the remoted version of SingleInstanceHandeler is created and the OnStartUp event fired on the "remote" object passing the command line arguments. The second instance then exits. Now this works great for a short period of time. However, after some time (maybe 5 minutes) the remoting channel stops "listening" (my best guess as to the problem). This means that any second instance fails to create a connection to it and throws an exception. I have also tried using the MS implementation of this logic as available in this (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwinforms/html/reaworapps1.asp) MS sample. But it appears to suffer from a different issue throwing an exception from within mscore.dll which implies a framework bug.     - run windows forms from localIntranet_zone Hello! I have a windows forms application developed in VS.NET 2003 (C#) that I want to install on the intranet. I've created a strong_name.snk file, compiled it with the app, installed it on the server and on the client machine, I added the child code group under LocalIntranet_Zone, for that assembly, with full trust. I did it on two separate intranet systems and it worked in one place but not the other. I've created a simple test-application (also with strong name) and just copied the file to the network share but it gave me a warning that the application was running in a partailly trusted context.     - simple intercommunication (application intercommunication) Hi, I'm after a simple way of sending a message to a previous instance of my small helper application that processes some command line instructions. The app can be configured to remain open (for debugging purposes) & this is where my problem arises. I can find the other (running) instance & close the new instance easily, however, the command line instructions need to be sent to the 1st instance application. I would be most grateful is someone could prove a simple method (even if it means populating a textbox & triggering a buttons 'click' event (on the 1st instance)). Basically, then new app sends a string (the command line) to the existing app (1st running copy) then closes. The running app handles the new command line instructions. Regards - Steve.     - Localization of Exception messages I have an hard time figuring out how to deal with localization and Exception messages. I have some options: 1) Standardize on english. 2) Pass an "Error Number" to my exceptions, which would ultimately translate to something localized if the app ever wants to display it (by calling the Message property). 3) Use the System.Resources namespace classes each time I throw an exception to make sure the right message is passed to the exception at creation. If I want to localize the throwing of an ArgumentException exception, for example, then only the first method (obviously) and the third method would localize the error message. With the other method, I would have to subclass ArgumentException to my own LocalizedArgumentException that takes an error number (which map to a localized error message) in argument. Anyway, I'm really stuck here, conceptually speaking. I don't know what are the best practices regarding that matter.     - HttpWebRequest not sending cookies Hi All, I'm having problems with HttpWebRequest, HttpWebResponse, and cookies. I copy over the cookies from the server's HTTP response using the following code: if (response.Cookies.Count > 0) { request.CookieContainer.Add(response.Cookies); } And I can see that the cookies are correctly copied since the cookie count on the request now equals the cookie count on the last response. But, when I come to enumerate the headers of the request, the cookies are not listed, nor do they show-up in the HTTP headers gleaned using a packet sniffer (Ethereal).     - Using dynamic ports (port 0) in TcpListener; how to configure port ranges? Hi. I've created a .net service to transfer files from and to a server from a client. When a file is transferred, the server opens a dynamic port by suppling port 0 to the TcpListener it's created and then communicates this port to the client so that the client knows how to connect (much like passive ftp transfers). Now when a sysadmin uses this service, is there any way he can control which port ranges the .net framework or the underlying service provider (and which provider is that?) uses?     - Installing a windows service 'manually' Hi! I created a windows service and was able to install and deinstall it with the 'installutil.exe' utility. Is there any possibility to install it directly from my application? The documentation only says that it *should* not be done but neither why it shouldn't be done nor how it is possible. I created a setup application to install it and that works. But I would like to spare my users to either run another setup or work with the installutil-program. Two buttons 'install service' and 'uninstall service' would be much better. Please tell me how to do that or why I shouldn't do so.     - IPC between application and windows service Hi! I would like to know what the 'official' method of communication between a windows service (*not* a web service) and an application is. To be more specific: I am writing a windows service with .NET that is used for backuping purposes. The user should for example be able to start a backup manually, that is to send a message to the service to start with the backup now. The service shall not have a GUI, but the application has. Now how to I tell the service to do something from the application? I was able to write a windows service and I am also able to create a windows forms application. My first idea was to use .NET Remoting. But Remoting always uses TCP/IP, right? So that would mean that my application might run into firewall problems, doesn't it?     - Assembly.Load() with strong name but no version! Is there any way to Assembly.Load() dynamically the DLLs of my project, with their strong names, but without the need to specify a version? I just want the public/private key to exist as a measure of safety for their authenticity. I don't want to narrow down the valid DLLs to only those that share the same version. Because if later i decide to upgrade a DLL, I'll have to recompile and send to the customer the WHOLE project, and not just the newer DLL, because its version will differ from the others... Thanks!     - System.Xml - Controlling linebreak/indentation on child/inline ele I'm going insane fighting against the xml reader/writer. I have xml that should look like this: <source><g>varname</g> some text <g>varname</g> <g>varname></source> This is a simplified version, but the point is that all spaces in the <source> element are significant. My problem is two-fold. First, the writer is determined to format this like so: <source> <g>varname</g> some text <g>varname</g> <g>varname></source> If I use the xml:space="preserve" attribute, I get the linebreak and indentation spaces. If I don't, I lose the space between </g> and <g>. The problem comes in when there might actually be significant spaces before the first <g> element. Distinguishing between significant spaces and the indentation spaces can't seem to be done. So the solution is probably to have the writer not put the <g> elements on a seperate line.     - Avoiding deadlock caused by Invoke I?ll try to explain my situation as clearly as possible? J I have a UI form that fires a worker thread. The worker thread regularly updates the UI via an Invoke (naturally). So far so good. The UI form also has a button that can abort the thread. What I?m trying to achieve is for the UI to say that the thread has been aborted once it has indeed been aborted. Here?s my problem: The user hits the Abort button which does an Abort() on the thread (after interrupting a waitsleepjoin) and, as per the MSDN documentation then does a join() to wait for the worker thread to finish (the documentation says that I *must* join). The worker thread captures the abort signal and attempts to update the UI via an Invoke. Of course, the main UI thread is now already joined to the worker thread, so the invoked method called by the worker thread sits in the UI thread queue and is unable to proceed because the UI is waiting for the worker thread to abort.     - Interop problems using VFP 6.0 and Framework 2.0 beta Hi All, There is a incompatibility between VFP 6 and Dotnet 2.0. we have a VFP class called message.dll, initially this was compiled in VFP 6.0 we did the folowing 1) use regsvr32 "message.dll" and register on client machine 2) used tlbimp message.tlb /out:messageDotnet.dll to convrt it to a dotnet DLL the above two steps gave no problems We then referenced the messageDotnet.dll class from dotnet 2.0 and whenever we executed the code it returned the following error "user-interface operation not allowed at this time". the funny thing was that when we tried to reference the original VFP 6.0 dll i.e "message.dll" from vb 6.0 it didnt throw any error. Now on a hunch we RE-compiled the VFP message.dll using VFP 7.0 and re-added it to the Dotnet solution, after recompiling as outlined in the steps 1 and 2; and Viola there was no problem and all worked fine What is this weird behaviour about, please enlighten us !!!! I am try to print a html document from my webrowser control . for that i use
the follwing command

It works well.
