    - Framework 2.0 compatibility issues with Component Services Hi, I developed a system using VS2003 and framework 1.1. Middleware developed in C# and VB 6.0. Since I have to go through COM+, my application installs fine when the framework is 1.1. However when I install 2.0, the application (proxy) does not work properly. I get an error 80020009.     - Is there a way we can send a feature request for Visual Studio? Hi, Is there a way we can send a feature request for Visual Studio? When using 'Refactor-->Encapsulate Field', I'd like to have an option for the references not to be updated anywhere in the project. It would be very useful for me (and probably others too) because I use this feature to generate my properties from my member variables. So I type all my member variables and then take them one by one and encapsulate them... When the project is small it's quick and efficient, but when the project becomes bigger it can take many seconds and sometimes minutes because it searches in all the assemblies of the solution to update the reference to a private variable that is not used anywhere because I just created it. Moreover, it would be nice to take a block of member variables and tell Visual studio to encapsulate them all. It would save a lot of time (and money too). I think yes and so I'd written a small example immediately I've met a problem. I'm using .NET Framework v. 1.1.4322 and it's the only version installed both client side and server side. My test applet is correctly loaded into IE client but when I try to setting programmatically the remoting I aways obtain a SecurityException even if the assembly is strong name signed and client side fully trusted.     - Problem with timeout in TransactionScope Hello, I'm porting my application from ServicedComponents to TransactionScope objects. One of the most fun features of new tech is that it allows transaction timeouts more then 10 minutes. My application has many layers and using SqlTransactions is not convinient. As I undestand if TransactionScope is created with TimeSpan.Zero timeout then transaction manager doesn't control transaction time. But actually the transaction is aborted after 10 minutes timeout set in Machine.config. It is true for both SQL 2000 & SQL 2005. If transactions were created explicitly via CommitableTransaction class, this limitation didin't appear ( but only for SQL 2005, SQL 2000 transaction still were aborted ). After explanation of System.Transaction code via Reflector utility I found that TransactionScope always checks timeout via TransactionManager.ValidateTimeout method while CommittableTransaction doesn't. I guess the the problem can be resolved by changing maximalTimeout in machine.config but it is not applicable in the concrete case. I'm wondering is such behavior of TransactionScope designed? Can I rely that CommittableTransaction preserves this behaviour in the next versions or .NET? Thank you for your attention. Vladimir. It shows cities from all over the world and it works extremely fast. I think it's some sort of partial callback? When I save page i have list only of cities that match first letters. So there is no big XML file.     - GC problem with large object - .net 1.1 Hello, I have an applications witch works with bitmaps. Such bitmaps are in windows (forms) sizeable. Each time it is neccary to allocate new bitmap with any size-step, because the bitmap is generated. So there is the following situation under .net 1.1 If the window (bitmap) is sized for exampel 10 bitmaps are generated and disposed in 2 seconds. Because the GC does not make garbage collection directly, this costs 10 MB ram instead of 1. If it is exreme, an application which needs realy 10 MB - you see in the taskmanager 50 MB. But this is the first layer of the problem. Now some time later, maybe the GC makes a garbace collection. Now GC-Memory has 10 MB used and 40 MB free. BUT the GC does not give the memory back to the system. (sometimes GC gives a little back to the system, but not all). Means: for a long time you see 50 MB RAM resources used in the tasks manger, what is not the reality, it's only 10 MB. This problem is very hard, because customers see this in the task manager und do not buy the product. So question: Is there any way under dot net 1.1 (.net net 2.0 is absolute impossible in the moment because of many reasons), to reduce the shown used Memory, which is wrong in the taskmanager for this app. Means is it possible to solve the problem when the bitmap is sized that memory is not accumulated, because with each new bitmap the old is disposed. I think there will be no solution under .Net / C#, but would be fine. But also a solution using C++ / unmanged code would be nice. (for the allocation of memory of the bitmaps only).     - Install font from ClickOnce application How can I distribute a TrueType font with my Windows Forms application using ClickOnce? Is there a direct/supported way to install via ClickOnce? I tried including the ttf files as resources and copying to the fonts folder on startup. This worked fine, but I can't manage to get them 'registered' properly (in spite of making registry entries and api calls for AddFontResource, CreateScalableFontResource, and SendMessage). These calls appear to work, but I still can't use the font. So, if there is no direct way to install with ClickOnce, any advice on doing the work from C# would be appreciated.     - bug with SelectedIndices collection in virtual ListView There seems to be a bug when using a ListView control in virtual mode. If you check the SelectedIndices property of your list view within the SelectedIndexChanged event, and the user Shift-Selects a range of items in the listView, the number of selected indices is always zero. The returned list of selected indices is correct if the user uses the ctrl-select, or just simple selects from the list. This happens when the view property is set to "Details". Of course, you must have the MultiSelect property set to true and the VirtualMode set to true as well. Is there a work-around/fix available for this? I've got it working, but I had to defensively trap and swallow a lot of exceptions. Is there a better way to discover if an executable is a valid assembly?     - Windows .Net 2.0 Application - Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070542 We have installed an .Net 2.0 windows application onto one of our clients PC's and we are experiencing some problems. When the application starts it tries to connect to a database in order to retrieve some information. Given below is an extract of the thrown error:- "System.IO.FileLoadException. Could not load file or assembly 'System.Transactions.............' or one of it's dependencies. Either a required impersonation level was not provided, or the provided impersonation level is invalid (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070542)" We believe that this error occurs due to the permission's of standard clients domain users, as if you log onto the client PC with administrator privileges the application can connect to the database without a problem. This assemblies are installed into the GAC on the PC, other .Net GAC assemblies run on the PC ok. I do not no anything about restrictinng desktops, therefore what restrictions would be within the user accounts to prevent this.     - Are named pipes quicker than just reading and writing to files? Hi all, I've been looking into doing some interprocess communication and have been reading about named pipes. Everyone seems to indicate that if the processes are either on your local PC or at least on your local LAN AND your messages are reasonably small (under a kilobyte) - then named pipes are the right solution. But all of the implementations I've seen seem to just be writing and reading to a file. Is named pipes just a marketing term for regular old file I/O.     - Async UI Calls Block on Dual-Core CPU, work fine on Single Core. Why? I then tried to run the .exe on my Dual core Pentium-D at work. The UI becomes unresponsive while the background thread is running. My problem is that since my class is not derived from Control, I do not have access to Invoke() in my async callback handler, where I would normally pass my SqlDataReader via Invoke to a safe place from which its contents can be accessed without synchroniziation issues. It seems silly to be deriving my utility class from Control when it is not really a control, but I want to be able to create instances of my data reading utility class in different places in my applications.     - System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker runs DoWork handler twice Hi, Using Visual c# 2005 express, I have a Form which utilises a button click to start a BackgroundWorker thread. The thread calls a Soap proxy class, derived by web reference, to consume a web service on a server. Each time it runs, it runs the DoWork event handler code twice! I've tried adding a second event handler in to the DoWork event. That one only ran once whilst the Soap service consumer one still ran twice. The code snippet below is the actual code for the button click, and event handler codes, with the following notes: - all the methods below are part of the Form class - SoapClass represents the web reference derived class. - the actual winform is a simple form with a username text field, password text field and connect button. it's very simple so I thought it a waste of space to post all the form supporting code.     - Hang when new DirectoryEntry declared I am using the System.DirectoryServices namespace in .net 2003. I have noticed some very strange behaviour related to the DirectoryEntry class. If I debug the following code with a break point on the Console.WriteLine line then there is a lengthy pause before the breakpoint is hit. If I remove the DirectoryEntry line then the breakpoint is hit immediately. static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Test"); DirectoryEntry dirEntry = new DirectoryEntry(); } Also this only happens when I am debugging in Visual Studio. If I run the console app on its own there is no pause. Inorder to download this file i need to call to url that tells to prepare the file for download, and then i call to another url that downloads the file.     - MSBuild and VSTS 2005 Forgive me if this is the inappropriate forum to post this, but I found MSBuild.exe in the framework directory so it seems right to me:-) Also forgive me if this duplicates an existing post. I posted this issue the other day, and it seems to have disappeared. (I have way too many posts not be there when I look for them!!!) Finally forgive me that this posting is not as complete as the original. I've made progress so I've had to leave out the error numbers that were part of the original. Now on to the issue: The MSBuild documentation implies that all you have to do is point it at the proj files maintained by the IDE and it will run. It appears to be even nicer than that. Start MSBuild in a folder with a single sln file and it will find and use it. Impressive! HOWEVER, it may or may not run without modification to the projects. I've had to do both of the following: 1) Add references to a library that was lower in the inheritance stack than those needed by the IDE. The projects being compiled didn't refer to this library, but forms were derived from forms that did refer to the library. (I've lost track of how many layers deep the inheritance of the main program window is from Windows.forms.form. It's a bunch.) 2) I had blanks in the names of icons included in the resources and they had to be removed. This has been documented by others elsewhere. I finally came to a show stopper. I'm getting C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Microsoft.Common.targets(2071,9): error MSB3188: Assembly BLAHBLAHBLAH must be strong signed in order to be marked as a prerequisite. No place have i marked BLAHBLAHBLAH as a prerequite. I'm not using strong signing precisely because "the directions" which i've actually read of a change discourage it for my target environment. I get this error occasionally in the IDE with various of the libraries in the project being the culprit. To solve the problem there, i just zap all the bin and obj folders and rebuild. (I zapp directories so frequently I wrote a program to do it. It's usually because forms get errors when I attempt to display them.) Zapping directories immediately before calling MSBuild makes no difference. SUGGESTIONS please. I have added try-catch block in all methods. This app is running continouously. It was working properly for say half an hours. I am running application in debugging mode. Suddenly my application displayed error message 'unable to supprt transport connection' with exception type as system.io.ioexception. I clicked on debug to find out error. The program is launched from a SQL Server via DTS, and the first thing the program does is read some information from a file (DAT/INI type) residing in the same folder as the exe. Rebuild Solution/Build Solution is a global override that forces VS.NET
to rebuild everything; you cannot cancel this behavior.

Instead, assign the dependancies on all your other projects to force
only the particular projects you wish to be built in your solution as a
group when you build only a selected project.

For each project, goto the VS.NET main menubar and select:
project->project dependancies and project->project build order

Checkmark the listed projects you want to have built when you build a
particular project - do not checkmark the project you wish to exclude.

After this, whenever you build a project in the solution, only the
projects you have checkmarked will be built.

Right Click on the Solution and go to the configuration manager.

Uncheck the project from the list of projects to build.

Not so. Go to Build|Configuration Manager... from the menu and you can
disable individual projects based on the solution configuration (e.g. so
some projects build in debug builds but not in release builds).
