    - config file with no touch deployment I'm playing with the no touch delpoyment, but I can't seem to load a config file. Is there an easy way to set up a publisher policy file to tell it the path of the config file? Where is the publicher policy deployed in that case? Can the config file be an embedded resource? In that case, has anyone gotten an embedded resource to work with Nant build tool? It seems with an auto deploy situation that you may not even need a config file. In my case it's not all that reasonable to manage a config file for hundreds of users anyway, unless it can be hosted on a shared server. AppSettingsReader should accept a file path.     - Using old dll library in .NET Hello everybody, I am new to .NET . I plan to create a www service that uses old dll library written in C++. If I use CGI to call this library from IIS , that is supposed to be quite heavy and resource consuming because for every http request a new instance of that library will be created ( I understand CGI that way). Is there any way to encapsulate that library in .NET environment (ASP.NET for example ? ) so all the requests will be served by preferably a single instance of that library ?     - Calling a GUI in windows service I am using VS.Net 2002 with windows 2000 advanced server and windows 2000 professional. I have a requirement to use windows service with a GUI. I want to show my own User Interface(Dialog) to get user input, before windows login screen. For that I have created a windows service, in the onstart event of this service, I am calling a vb.net exe, which has windows form. But it throws error bcoz of the form. I even tried by calling a vb.net dll from windows service with a msgbox in the dll ,i am getting the same problem. During this error, the DEBUG points to the form in the code.     - Tool for viewing assembly load exception stack traces I have an assembly that fails to run because of some SecurityException related to my permission settings. I *really* want to figure out why the failure occurs, but when I debug in VS.Net, it happens so early (during loading) that I cannot step into code to look at the stack trace. The only thing I can know is that it's a SecurityException; no watching of the exception object because I never get to my own code. Is there any way to debug this? I can't even get another process to attach a debug session to, so I would even take doing something like java where I go "java myassembly.exe -verbose"...anything with some kind of verbose logging. I want to override BeginLoadData() and EndLoadData() to accomplish my sorted ends, yet I cannot discern whether or not DbDataAdapter and its descendants call these methods on a table when using the Fill() method. I get as far as FillFromCommand() in DbDataAdapter, and am then foiled by a Reflector which can't seem to get it right (stack exceptions?).     - Assembly Version Issues Hello All, I am developing a "Business Object" Assembly and "Data Object" Assembly (Remoted) , both of which would be called from .NET and from ASP (using COM layer Interop). I deployed all the assemblies into the GAC and it had a specific version when I deployed it. I developed a service that hosts the Remoting Objects and I deployed the dlls in the GAC and things worked fine. I made a few changes to the COM Interop layer, and when I complied it the versions became different, and even after I manually deploy it to the GAC, the Service does not load the Dll from the GAC, even after restarting the service. It always loads the Dll from its Bin Directory. How can I resolve this issue? How do I make all the projects load the assemblies from the GAC? Is there a way I could force this?     - How to properly deploy shareable assemblies to a server I'm looking for a .NET "best practices" opinion on the following. I have a .NET assembly (call it MyApp.dll) that I want to make generally available to other people in my company. I will periodically be coming out with new minor versions (bug fixes) and major versions (new features) of MyApp.dll. Other people in my company will be using MyApp.dll as a library, in that there are some types in MyApp.dll that they will want to reference from their own assemblies that they are building locally on their machines. So, other developers will be creating assemblies that reference MyApp.dll. Now for the questions: Where should MyApp.dll live? How do I account for multiple versions of MyApp.dll existing side-by-side, ready to be accessed from client assemblies? I would like MyApp.dll to be on a company server. But then what (if any) .NET technologies do I need installed on the server? I could simply set up a Windows directory structure on the server to account for different versions of the assembly, and ask people to point their references at that directory structure, but that seems very clunky.     - Problems when performing operations in ASP.NET Hi, I have been having a problem since friday and could not find out what is going on. I have an app built with ASP.NET (C#), that is used from lots of places inside the company. Lately, out users have been complaining about a problem that, when they click on a image to perform some operations, the browser hangs (white spaces, doesn't repaint). One thing they reported is that they have been having those problems after friday, when the updates for the blaster virus were used. More, they report that some stations still work very fine (those that doesn't have the updates). But, in our development environment, we have machines all updated that work very fine with the app. The machine that doesn't work has the following: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633, with SP1, Q818529, Q330994 and Q822925.     - Undefined Handles Hi. I need to get a device context for a form. I'm doing this by using Graphics.getHdc(); This returns what appears to be a valid IntPtr, however when I convert this to a HDC by using either HDC hdc = (HDC) (void*) myIntPtr; or HDC hdc = (HDC) myIntPtr.ToInt32(); I get an undefined value for hdc. I have had this same problem when getting a HWND for the form - the IntPtr appears to be fine, but upon converting it I get undefined values. I'm using .NET 2003 on Windows XP (coding in C++). I've found the System.ServiceProcess.ServiceInstaller has an enumeration of ServiceStartMode but that is used to install a new service. But what if the char is not in that character set corresponding to the encoding? For example, U+714A is a Chinese character, but not in Big5 character set.     - COM Interop - HTTP Binary Remoting Hello All, I am in the process of migrating the business layer of a web application into VB.NET and also implementing HTTP Binary Remoting between the Business Object Server and the Web Server (IIS) from where ASP pages call the business objects. I have a very strange problem. The ASP and .NET Business Object layer interact perfectly as expected if the Web Servers (IIS)'s 'Application Protection' - property in the 'Home Directory' tab is set to 'LOW'. If this property is set to 'MEDIUM', I get an error as follows: Error Type: mscorlib (0x80070002) File or assembly name pstkszrq.dll, or one of its dependencies, was not found. /testDotNet.asp, line 18 The Dll name (pstkszrq.dll in here) is different everytime the error pops up...looks like an internal dll that IIS creates. The error occurs when the ASP file tries to create the Object using late binding. I have no idea whats going on in here...no clue whatsoever. If anyone has any clues....it would be of great help. So If I have machine who's default Locale is "en-US" and I open some french text like this: [C# exaple that has the same behaviour in any .net languages] StreamReader sr = new StreamReader("C:\\someFrenchFile.txt"); string strInput = sr.ReadToEnd(); Suppose the file contains this: "Le Québec en été." the characters that I get in strInput are: "Le Qu?bec en ?t?." What I'd like to be able to do is load the french string with the right characters regardless of what's the machine's default Locale.     - Updater Application Block and MSI's Hi all, I'm just wondering how you initially deploy applications that use the Updater Application Block. It seems that because some of the originally deployed files in the nested directory (1.0.0.0) get deleted after a couple of updates - the MSI shortcuts notice the missing files and try to repair the installation with the original files. What can I do to prevent this?.. I can't seem to add a 'static' shortcut into my MSI, so I'm a bit stuck, short of having the application itself create its own shortcut.     - How to scan a database's Stored Procedures for a string Hello. We're porting our SQL Server 7.0 databases to SQL Server 2000. Some of the SQL in some of our SP's make reference to the "old" SQL Server instance name. I need to change those references to use the new name. I tried writing a VB app using ADOX, but unfortunately the OLEDB provider for SQL Server does not support the Command property of the Procedure object. Other than manually opening each SP (there are a lot of them) and visually scanning for the "old" server name, how can I programmatically perform this scan?     - Request for help regarding .NET code access security I wrote a tiny strong-named .NET console exe assembly which writes to a file "c:\foo.txt". I can place the assembly onto a sharepoint, use the configuration MMC snapin to make my own *MACHINE* permission set granting r/w/dir access to "c:\foo.txt", create my own strong-name code group (public key imported from the assembly) and successfully run the assembly (cmd prompt from sharepoint directory). I assume the *MACHINE* "LocalIntranet" zone is what is (correctly) blocking local file access from an assembly deployed on a sharepoint, but apparently whatever permissions the *MACHINE* LocalIntranet zone revokes from me, my new strong-named code group is granting back to me. BUT ? If I then MOVE my permission set and code group from *MACHINE* to *USER* then I get a permission denied on writing the file! I had thought that the *USER* permission set / code group would override and give me access just as they had when they were *MACHINE* entries. What am I doing wrong? I don't want everyone who has physical access to a particular machine to be able to run an assembly that writes to "c:\foo.txt". I know that we could always restrict access to the assembly using "old fashioned" NTFS/share permissions. But isn't there a way (without changing the righteous *MACHINE* LocalIntranet zone permissions) to say "anybody logging on to this machine can try to run the assembly, but only this particular user will be successful" and control all this within the ".NET Framework Configuration" MMC snapin? TIA. P.S. - Is there a flowchart / diagram / document that explains the precedence logic that the .NET runtime goes thru when calculating code access security to determine whether a particular resource may be manipulated or not? There are a number of levels here ? domain v. machine v. user, and then the predefined zoned v. user-added code groups that grant or restrict access? The server is Win2K running dotnet framework 1.1 . Anyone have any ideas

Hi Mark,

Is there any chance that you install or re-install IIS
after installed .NET Framework. I had the same problem
and found that installing IIS after .NET was the reason
because IIS doesn't map any of the new .NET extensions
(.aspx, .asmx, etc.). There is an article on MSDN for
this - can't find it now but you should be able to do a
search.
