    - Gracefully fail to start a service If my service fails to start, I'd like to notify the user and either display an error or direct them to check the event log to see more info. With Win32, you could return a non-0 number to the SCM during startup and a dialog would be displayed (by the SCM) showing the error number and directing the user to check the error log for further information. Is there similar functionality in .NET? I've tried throwing exceptions and calling Environment.Exit([some number]) in OnStart(), but both cause the SCM to display some useless dialog. I am using HTTPWebRequest, getting the Response stream, and copying the stream to a file. It always works fine in the debugger, but most of the time the release version is stripping out many of the carriage returns/line feeds.     - Scrollbar Event Hi, I have a windows application that's using the Datagrid to display records. The datasource has the potential of being very large, so I'm only retrieving a certain number of records at a time into a dataset. So, as I scroll down to the bottom of my datagrid, the next page of, say 100 records is appended to the dataset and so on. The code I'm using in the Scroll event is displayed below. However, the event is called again and again in a kind of loop until there is no more data. The scrollbar is apparently being positioned to the bottom every time the data is retrieved, calling my procedure each time. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?     - GetValue and ISerialization, object not constructed?? I've got this strange problem in a class that uses ISerializable to serialize a NameValueCollection During deserialization, in the object constructor, after using GetValue to get the NameValueCollection from SerializationInfo, the NameValueCollection is not usable. It throws a NullReferenceException from pretty much any property/method. It is usable after the object is deserialized, but not in the constructor. I've narrowed down the code to a small sample. Can an object not be used during the deserialization constructor?     - The Register directive for the referenced assembly Hello everybody! I am authoring my custom webcontrol and faced a very difficult problem. I have two assemblies: the first one contains some base classes and the second one contains a class which 1) Inherits a class from the first assembly 2) Contains references to the first assembly's class instances. When I drop the control from the second assembly onto a form, it adds references for both assemblies to the project, but it creates only one Register directive (which defines the TagPrefix) in the aspx code. At design time the control is displayed fine, but at run-time it throws an exception. To solve the problem one should manually add the Register directive for the base assembly. Does anybody know what should I do to that the Register directives for both assemblies were created automatically when one drops the control onto a form? Any help is appreciated Thank you in advance!     - remove an item from a drop down list Hi, if anyone can help me with this i would apreciate it. I have 2 drop down lists, and between them, they have some values that are similar. How can i fill the second drop down and remove the item thats selected in the first drop down, so that the same item doesnt appear on both drop downs? i have tried doing this after i load both dropdowns: 2ndlist.Items.Remove(1stlist.SelectedItem.Text) BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. I know it is successful because after the impersonation, the WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name returns the admin credentials (before the impersonation it returns the logged-in user's credentials). I'm also testing the user's role (using IsInRole()) and receive True for Administrator. However, when attempting to add a user to the group, I receive a 'UnauthorizedAccessException: General access denied error'.     - Architecture: Scalability VS Performance This is a design / inheritance qus. I have class Task. This is a base class for some specific tasks Say WorkOrderTask : Task TimeSheetTask : Task Now Task has a function GetDetails() which gets all info about task. This makes a database call. I override this in the derived class. For implementing this in derived class i see following 2 approaches. Approach 1. WorkOrderTask .GetDetails() { Calls base.GetDetails(); to get base details, populates in the object Gets details specific to WorkOrderTask, populates in the object returns; } Approach 2. WorkOrderTask .GetDetails() { Get details specific to WorkOrderTask as well as the base class details, populates in the object returns; } The problem with Approach 1 I have to make 2 database calls. Approach 2 If theres some change in base class I need to take care of these in all the derived classes as well. Whereas, Approach 1 is advantageous here as by modifying only the Task.GetDetails funciton ( this is the base class ) function i have all the values and i do not need to touch the derived classes. Was thinking this might be a very common problem, so perhaps many of might be able to guide me on the approach i must take here. Perhaps anything other then the two i have talked about. My new laptop has Visual Studio .Net 2003 running on Windows XP. I imported an existing Web project to the new laptop, made some modifications, rebuilt the project, and pushed the changes, including the DLL and PDB files, to our "test and QA" server. The application blew up on the first screen; the error was something like "unable to find the query string collection object". I copied the changed .aspx and .aspx.vb files back to the old laptop, rebuilt the project, and again pushed all changes, including the DLL and PDB files, to the "test and QA" server. This time, no problem. What do I have to do so that our servers, including our client's production servers, can run applications developed with VS .Net 2003? Much obliged.     - Threading and raising events hello, I'm using C# and having a little thread communication problem : -one thread (and its associated object) receives UDP packets using the UdpClient class -another object (say Object2) needs to raise an event from another thread when a packet is received. -as Object2 *could* be sitting on the main thread, it cannot be blocked waiting on the "UdpThread" -Object2 is not a System.Window.Forms.Control -I'd rather avoid polling some synchronized variable. in the good old win32 times, i would have allocated a window handle in Object2's thread and used PostMessage from the UdpThread.=> no polling and no locking... I have a datagrid which is ReadOnly. When you click in a cell, the text edit box appears which looks bad and distracts the user, AND it captures DoubleClick which I want to handle at the DataGrid level. I have set up a TableStyle and GridColumnStyles - all ReadOnly. I have created a new class for the columns, which inherits DataGridTextBoxColumn, and have called HideEditBox in the constructor. It does absolutely nothing. We have searched the newsgroups and have not seen any explanations and very few instances of this problem.     - Runs Slow The First Time I have an application that uses data access that runs slow the first time. My first page reads data from an ODBC source and the second page hits a MSDE database. After each page opens the first time, they run just fine. What should I do? I have all my code in ASPX pages right now, but I would like to break it up in some code behind. That is if I get a username, password in a Login form, then I pass these to the subsequent Search form as session variables.     - RSACryptoServiceProvider constructor very slow under Win XP I have a .NET app that uses the RSACryptoServiceProvider class to perform a key exchange with a server. During testing we've found that on some Windows XP machines, the call to the constructor for this class can take 15 or more seconds! On our Win 2K and Win 98 test machines it always takes less than 3 seconds. The problem's very easy to reproduce -- just create a console app with one line of code in it: RSACryptoServiceProvider p = new RSACryptoServiceProvider(); One most machines, this should run fairly quickly. On the afflicted machined, it's very slow. I know that the key generation goes on during the constructor, but 15 seconds...?!?! Also, as I said, this only affects SOME XP machines -- we have others that work just as the Win 2K boxes. To compare the XP machines that work fine to those that don't, we compared the advapi32.dll versions/dates, but they were identical.     - Class Modifiers via Reflection Is there a way to determine the access modifiers of a class type in an assembly via reflection? I see that I can determine if the class is public or non-public, but I would like to be able to further sub-divide the non-public modifiers (assembly, family, familyAndAssembly, familyOrAssembly, private).     - EventLog Category I have an application that writes events to the Windows Event Log. I created a log Source ID on the Application log. Everything seems to be working fine except that all the events have the event category of Network. I found the code for that by trial and error. I would like to add two new event categories to make the event records more intuitive. I've spent a day already trying to do this.     - DirectoryInfo / FileInfo I am writing a file manager that uses DirectoryInfo / FileInfo to obtain details about files and folders that are then shown in a ListView. During testing I have found that I can't delete some files or folders because 'another process is using them'. I ran Process Explorer (by Mark Russinovich www.sysinternals.com) and it shows that my app seems to have a massive number of files and folders open which is a bit worrying.
