    - IEnumerator specification inconsistency? In MSDN (August 2006) in the specification of IEnumerator.Current there is word on exceptions. InvalidOperationException shall be thrown in case "The collection was modified after the enumerator was created.". But in the remarks section it can be read that "If the collection is modified between MoveNext and Current, Current returns the element that it is set to, even if the enumerator is already invalidated." For me both this sentances seem to be contradictory. Or am I mistaken? Also another intersting thing. IEnumerator<T> does not specify exceptions at all.     - Help with Ping Function, .net framework 1.14322, VB 2005 I need to know how to map a network drive using Visual Basic 2005, when the users pc doesn't have .Net Framework 2.0. My workplace only gives us user profiles so I can't install framework 2.0. They do allow us to run vbscript and .exe fles. however some app's can't be installed such as framework 2.0. Please let me know what other avenues I have. I created this program in Visual Basic 2005, and I now notice that I have this problem, do I have to start again in Visual Basic 2003, or can I set vb2005 to create a program based on the .net 1.14322 framework?     - Question on ICollection.SyncRoot implementation Using "Lutz Roeder's .NET Reflector" on .NET Framwork shows that collections implement SyncRoot like this: object ICollection.SyncRoot { get { if (this._syncRoot == null) { Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref this._syncRoot, new object(), null); } return this._syncRoot; } } Now I have to questions on this. 1) (major) Why is it made so? Why not initialize _syncRoot in the constructor, or even better in declaration like: private object readonly _syncRoot = new object(); (Note that this also allows the use of readonly.) The construction by definition is executed only by on thread so no problem. And after the object is constructed the _syncRoot already exists so you do not have to check for its existance and do interlocked compare-exchange. Was optimalization the reason (no object created when no "call" to SyncRoot)? But on the other hand if you use SyncRoot you must pay for the null check and interlocked operation. And if one uses a collection of objects the one more empty object doesn't seem to do much difference. Or am I wrong here? 2) (minor) Why is this explicite implementation?     - Getting current method info for logging Is there any way to get the name of the method that called the current method? Also, is there any way to get the values of the parameters passed into the method, along with the parameter names? I want to write a method that I can call at the start of each method for logging purposes. It'll check if the logging level is high enough, and if so, record the method name and each parameter name and value. I realise I can use reflection to get the name of the current method and the names of the parameters. How can I get the name of the method that called the current method? Or is the only way to do this to pass System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod() as a parameter? And how can I get the values of the parameters? I was hoping there'd be a Key-Value collection containing them but can't find anything. Failing that, is there a way to say 'give me the value of the parameter named in this string'?     - DataTable.Compute() question hello, i have a big datable of a bunch of stuff. i am interested in getting row counts that match certain criteria. currently i do this by creating a new DataView for each criteria, and getting its .RowCount. like so: dv = New DataView(dt, "Type = 2", "Type", DataViewRowState.CurrentRows) total = dv.Count writer.WriteLine(String.Format("Lines of Type 2: {0}.", total)) ...that works, but i was wondering -- is there a way to use the DataTable.Compute() method to do this? i had tried something like this, but it didnt work: Dim oTotal As Object = dt.Compute("Count(*)", "Type = 2") ...this doesnt work because the aggregate function Count() isnt designed to work this way. but is there something that is? thanks! matt Tag: Desktop background Tag: 132950

    - Overriding Equals Hello all, I am faced with a dilemma with a class I am working on. I am overriding the Equals() method to be able to make comparisons with objects of the same type, but this class has a member field that contains a collection. My problem is, the two objects I am comparing are exactly the same but the collections in each object are different. Is it a good idea to check equality of member fields that are collections? For example: class MyClass has two member fields: Name and Jobs. Jobs is a JobCollection of Job objects. Both MyClass and JobCollection override Equals(). I have a instance B of MyClass that contains 4 Jobs and in an Array of MyClass objects, I have element C that contains the same name as B but only consists of 3 Jobs. The Jobs are unsynchronized because when B changed from 3 to 4, there was no way to notify the Array of MyClass objects that B and C are the same and the new Job added to B had to be added to C as well.     - Desktop shortcut when deploying I added a deployment project to my solution and when through the process of setting it all up. When I run my installer it does everything correctly apart from the fact that the shortcut on the desktop and the program files menu points not to the exe file but to the folder the exe file is in. When I go into my deployment project and try to change the target property of the shortcut it only lets me choose "Application Folder". I can not choose the exe. What am I doing wrong ?     - Bug in My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText I've found that My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText in .Net 2.0 writes three additional, non-text bytes in front of the string it's supposed to be writing. These bytes are not in the normal text range of values, and don't show up if you load the file into Notepad or other text viewers, but can be easily seen with Visual Studio 2005's Binary editor. Additionally, if you use this method to write out an HTML file to be embedded in other HTML (like an Outlook signature), these bytes get rendered. Finding this bug was a pain, to say the least. I have an example VS2005 solution folder which shows the bug, and would be happy to send it to someone at MS if anyone is interested, but you can verify in about 2 minutes with a simple "Hello World!" output to a new text file using the above method.     - Button Background in .NET 3.0 In XAML I set up a style that says a button's background is red. I assign it to a button on my form. When I mouse over it the background turns usual blue-ish color. Mouse away it goes back to red. However, if I click the button and mouse away, the colors begin to alternate between red and the blue.     - Refresh application settings at runtime Hi, Help would be appreciated! I am writing windows services that I do not want to restart unnecessarily. Problem is that if I want to change application settings in the .config file, say for instance a polling frequency, I have to restart the service to read the new settings. All the methods to refresh/reread settings seem to work only for user settings, not application settings.     - Why so many copies of .NET DLL? Why does .NET make so many copies of my DLLs? I inherited a large project and there are two pervasive DLLs that get used everywhere: PlcmObject.dll and PlcmUtil.dll Why our build procedure copies them all over our build directory is a mystery to me. I did a dir /s c:\ and found 170 copies (I assume that is 85 copies each) of these two DLLs. Can anyone guess why our build procedure would make so many copies? I thought the whole point of using a DLL instead of an OLB (can you create OLBs for .NET project?) or including the source code again was to save disk space. Now I assume our build procedure would not make copies of these DLLs in the two Microsoft directories below. Why does Microsoft (Visual Studio perhaps?) make so many copies? I guess NUnit is making copies too. 6 copies in the Application Data directory, for example: c:/Documents and Settings/sheintze/Local Settings/Application Data/assembly/dl2/GGH8B4CG.6O1/3C1CCLC7.KVR/d27da362/4238e818_09dac701/PlcmUtility.dll 9 copies in the nunit directory, for example: c:/Documents and Settings/sheintze/Local Settings/Temp/nunit20/ShadowCopyCache/633227782609218750/Tests/assembly/dl2/9f92218c/207c98d8_53dfc701/PlcmUtility.DLL This is making life hell because periodically we have to find and delete these 170 copies to make the build work!     - ASP.NET/AJAX Accordion I have an asp.net web software program which utilizes AJAX. I use ajax on many of the pages and have not had issues in development mode or on the user's side. However, recently I added a page with the Accordion control tool. In development mode, I can see and use the accordion tool. However, at the client, the page appears blank. The other pages that use AJAX are fine ... it is just this one that is not working. I am stumped and have tried everything I can think of. Anyone have some suggestions?     - Running Caspol from a batch file Can anybody tell me if there is a paramater I can use with CASPOL from within a batch file to prevent the dos window being displayed. I am trying to remove a group using caspol -machine -quiet -pp off -rg TempGroup and then replace it using caspol -machine -quiet -addgroup All_Code -strong - file DummyApp.exe -noname -noversion FullTrust -name TempGroup - description "Code group granting full trust to applications compiled with LtempGroup.snk strong name signature" But whenever I run the Batch file it throws up a Dos Window.     - Problem post KB937143 install Windows Server with .Net dll exposed via COM Dear Group, We've recently applied KB937143 to a server and a bespoke dll we have (for encryption) has suddenly stopped working. This is a VS 2005 (framework 2) dll that simply wraps some of the MD5 functions within the .Net Framework. The dll has been exposed to COM via the usual means. This has all been working without issue in a production environment for well over 12 months with the dll being shared between a .Net application and a server side classic ASP site. The problem appears to be that KB937143 has done something to the way dll's are exposed. The dll is shown to be still registered but all the methods for it have just disappeared! Have tried un-registering the dll and re-registering to no avail. Un-install KB937143 and the COM methods will reappear! Note that this issue only happens on servers that have IE 7 installed - IE 6 based machines appear to be unaffected. Any helps thoughts, or comments very much appreciated.     - Implementing a Thread.JoinAll(timeout) using managed threading I recently found myself in a situation wanting to Thread.JoinAll(timeout) (i.e. blocking the calling thread until all a list of threads have finished or the timeout has expired). I wanted to do this using only managed threading[1], which means Monitors instead of WaitHandles. I also didn't want to assume the threads were worker threads in the thread pool. The solution I came up with resembles the one described in Joseph Albahari's "Threading in C#" E-book[2]. The problem is, I (and it) relied on a. locking, Wait()ing and Pulse()ing to control flow b. decreasing an "number of active threads" counter c. keeping track of how much of the desired timeout has passed d. assuming everything is done when the counter reaches 0 Even though it seems to work, it seems rather kludgy for something that is more or less 1 line of code if you use the thread pool and WaitAll(). Can any of you think of a neater solution? 1: From the .NET Framework developer's guide: "Monitor objects are purely managed, fully portable, and might be more efficient in terms of operating-system resource requirements.     - .NET 3.0 Launch Condition - what version to specify? What should I specify in the Version property of the .NET Framework Launch Condition in a VS2005 deployment project for a .NET 3.0 application? It automatically puts 2.0.50727 and AllowLaterVersions = False, but it seems that won't work if have 3.0 installed. Or is this yet another symptom of .NET 3.0 not actually being a "real" version?     - Xml serialization, arrays, XmlAnyAttribute Hi... I was trying to deserialize objects from xml that contain a couple of arrays. In the xml, at least, I was trying to express some default/static members to the array as attributes on the array bracket (e.g. ... <Foobars defaultFoo="bar"> <Foobar>Foo</Foobar> <Foobar></Foobar> </Foobars> ... and in the class to be deserialized I have public Foobar[] Foobars {} ) I was experimenting with [XmlAnyAttribute], [XmlAttribute], etc and I found that the attribute defaultFoo just vaporizes. It doesn't show up in the any-attribute array for the container class nor does it show up in the unknown attributes array for the Foobar instances. Ideally, what I'd like to have happen is to direct defaultFoo directed into public class Foobar { public static string defaultFoo; } but at the moment I'm not having luck getting it to show up anywhere.     - FileSystemWatcher-Loosing events? I am using fileSystemWatcher to monitor a directory on a file server. I am looking for zip files. When a zip file arrives the watcher event is trigged an I can unzip the file and then delete it. A very simple application but...I have a problem. When I copy say 10 zip files at once into the watched directory a problem occure. What I can se som create events are missed? Is there a max buffer limit. No error is created by fileSystemWatcher. None of the overloads for either the Connect or BeginConnect methods takes that many inputs (basically they take host and port only).     - FTP vb.net firewall hi guys, i have recently implemented an ftp class in vb.net for work with one of my clients. unfortunately when i put my software live i found that the client requires the a firewall parameter to be passed into the ftp class to make it work correctly.     - Generics and their resulting class. Possible to obtain? Hi, We need to serialize (binary) objects containing generic collections. The thing is, when we try to get the objects back (deserialize) with a different instance of the application, we receive an exception stating the constructor of the generic class does not exist. So Is there a way to obtain the resulting classes of the generics we use so we can add them as "normal" code in our app? We can develop our own starting from non-generic collections, but then we would have to develop our own methods and maintain them. The generics are already debuged and maintained by MS so we would like to generate them with the same generator the framework generates them if possible. So if I summarize what we want : We want to take the resulting class from a given generic and "copy-paste" the code and create a "user class" that we will add to our project. Is it possible?     - create an XPS document I would like to export my document has an XPS document. I already have some printing code. The problem which I am facing is making the whole process without dialog. Through the print menu the user get a dialog where he can choose his printer of choice among available printer, which can be the XPS output if it's available. Then there is a second dialog letting him specify the output file. I would like to be able to do everything programatically so that I test if the XPS printer is there and set the output file. First step: find a newsgroup that is actually for posting questions
about using whatever operating system it is you're using (I'm guessing
Windows, but you haven't even been that explicit in your post).

This newsgroup is for .NET programming questions, and your question
doesn't appear to be in any way related to that.
