    - deploying security policy in AD (caspol?) I got an .NET app, got it signed with a strong name, and now would like to give this app (better, every app signed with this strong name) full rights in my entire network. So I am looking for a way to set once, on my windows server 2003, full rights for all apps signed with this special strong name. Well, there is an 'enterprise' setting on caspol, but I can't get this setting propagated on the AD network. I thought this should be a common problem, but I can't find no solution other then making a batch and starting it on every comp more or less by hand (since only admins can set machine or enterprise rights logon scripts could only be used for user rights).     - DPAPI via impersonation I'm trying to use DPAPI via impersonation. (.Net 2.0) * DPAPI works fine * impersonation works fine (via PInvoke) However, when I try to use DPAPI after impersonation, it fails. The failure appears to be that the profile is not loaded. I get: System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException : The system cannot find the file specified. So. I use PInvoke to load the users profile. That fails with an access violation. So. Again using PInvoke, I add SE_BACK_PRIVILEGE and SE_RESTORE_PRIVILEGE t the process token, before impersonation. Still an access violation on the profile load. If I attempt to add the token privileges after impersonation, the attempt fails with an access violation. Does anybody know the secret sauce to using DPAPI under impersonation?     - Get Assembly of Calling Thread or Object? Does anyone know how to get the assembly associated with a particular thread? I'm creating a generic Factory class to create types based on config file parameters. I would like to use the calling object's assembly if it isn't specified in the config value. I know how to get the current executing assembly, but I don't know how to find the assembly associated with the calling thread, which will always be a seperate assembly. Or, if using the thread is the wrong approach, is there a better/different way to identify the assembly of the object that called my Factory.CreateObject method? Thanks in advance.     - How to install office version 11 in GAC A new PC with XP PRO and Office 2003 preloaded along with Framework 1.1. We since loaded the Framework 2.0 on the machine and attempted to load a ClickOnce application and the following error shows up. "Unable to install or run the application.     - Programatically find the configured DNS server I have some c# code to perform DNS lookups but currently need to provide the IP address of the DNS server it uses. I would like to be able to identify the addres of the currently configured DNS server(s) and use this so that the app will effectively configure itself. Can anyone please tell me how I can do this, I know with .NET 2.0 and the System.Net namespace Dns is available that can provide the IP address / hostname of the system, but I need more than just this - I want the DNS server.     - app.config for DLLs I'm trying to figure out what happens to settings in the app.config for DLLs when it is used by an application. More specifically, connection strings used by the DLL only. When the VB.NET executable is compiled, referencing the DLL (in the same solution), there does not appear to be a seperate area for DLL specific connection strings in the resulting .exe.config file.     - SqlServer 2005 CLR integration using DirectoryServices Using a VisualStudio 2005 Sql Server Database project template, I want to access DirectoryServices (AD) from a UDF, but cannot add a reference to directoryservices.dll (legally) into the c# project, and if I add it illegally (in the XML), i get a sql error saying that DirectoryServices is not in the SQL catalog.     - Strong name validation failed after calling a .Net Exe from ASP Hi! I have a severe problem with my ASP web application. The ASP Site is built to run a .Net application (on command line mode) synchronously. I've tried to run the .Net exe on the server for many times, and it always returned without an error and worked correctly. Within the ASP page, I call the .Net application by the WScript.Shell object, in synchronous mode. Unfortunately the shell call returns with an error, the eventlog entry shows a "Strong name validation failed" error for the .Net application (which runs without problems, if started local). The server is a Windows 2000 server with IIS 5.0. This whole workflow already works with an XP server!! And now I should try making it run on the 2000 platform. btw> I checked all known to me security options. The IUSR even has administrator rights...     - Good Cheap Installation Software?? Hi, Was wondering anybody could help? I'm looking an application to help deploy my Windows Form application. I've been using the built in installer in VS.NET 2005, but I want to package all the files up into one exe (this includes the prerequisites!).     - .NET based services not starting reliably: ServiceController.Start() method We're using the ServiceController class provided by the .NET Framework, programming in C#. We are using the Start() method to start a service from another service. This works fine most of the time, but occasionally after a system startup (where the service doing the starting of the other is automatically started by Windows XP) the ServiceController's Start() method fails to start the other service. It is probably throwing an InvalidOperationException in these cases (we know it is in some cases). Is there any way to tell why Windows cannot start the service, and are there known problems with the reliability of the Start() method? It works most of the time, but occasionally after unsealing the XP OS, or after a restart, this fails. We're trying retries of calls to the Start() method, but after 3 retries it still fails inexplicably. We need to find out if: 1.. this is a known problem 2.. how long does it wait, and is this wait time adequate? 3.. can this happen if one of the services upon which the service being started depends takes too long to start? I can manually unload/reload etc, however, the original app domain is retaining a lock on the shadowcopied assembly. I've done a fair ammount of research before resorting to this. LoadPlugins on PluginLoader calls LoadPlugins which returns a IPluginCollection which is a collection of instantiated types etc. I beleive my problem is that because I set a local var in my app to return value from pluginLoader.LoadPlugins that its hanging on to the original files.     - Need to install 1.1, already have 2.0 I have a dll that a co-worker wrote which needs .NET 1.1 to work. The server I am installing it on already has 2.0, probably installed when I put SQL Server 2005 there. I cannot make this dll work on any machine that has .NET 2.0 on it. However, if I go into IIS and tell my default web site (which uses this dll) to point to .NET 1.1, it works. I don't have the time right now to look into why it works in 1.1 and not 2.0. What I'd like to do is have 1.1 on this server. However, for some reason, 1.1 doesn't show up in the IIS dropdown; only 2.0 does. When I try to install 1.1 from an exe I downloaded some time ago. I've read up on what is included in the different versions and here's my issue. The Professional edition comes the closest to what I need (ALL the languages, mobile device support & Crystal Reports), but I also need the Office development support in the "Visual Studio Tools for Office" version. While using FTPWebRequest, I have found at least one FTP site where this function fails. The URI I am using is ftp://nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov/md_doc/app_a.doc This NASA ftp site is available through anonymous log in, and other FTP clients, including Internet Explorer using FTP protocols, download the file just fine. As the capture below shows, when FTPWebRequest sends PWD, it receives ANON_DIR:[000000] from the ftp site. I have a Windows service application with a public class that inherits from System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase Is it possible to modify this application so that it still is a Windows service but on the other hand can be started just as if it were a standard Windows Forms application (e.g. by double clicking the .exe file)?     - ManagementOperationObserver and Get( observer ) The following illustrates a problem I have in another program ... however it only occurs on one in 5,000 remote machines. I suspect the cause of the problem lies with the remote machine ... but why doesn't my client time out with an exception ? The Get() method that initialises the asynchronous operation blocks for way too long (I've not seen it give up). Most of the time one will get an error of some sort, RPC not available, Access Denied, COM is stuffed, etc ... but when it hangs it's gone ... and it's repeatable against the machine ... but you have to find the right machine. Needless to say I've got a hugely multithreaded scanner trying to do all this scanning for real ... but when one of the remote machines block this initialisation ... then I'm stuffed. I've unsatisfactorily tried to set up another thread to maintain a timeout and abort the thread if it hangs too long during this method. Note this method doesn't retrieve the data ... merely set's up the operation ... so I believe. I've not verified that the problem occurs in synchronous mode ... but wbemtest.exe does have the same issue ... which isn't a .Net app ... so I suspect this is a COM or WMI server issue. It works the fine time I run it but then when I run it again straight away it fails with.. I have several IP addresses defined on my PC (all bound to the same interface), and i need to send multicast messages from a specific address.     - Memory leak with .NET 1.1 SP1 My mixed-mode application repeatedly calls various pre-compiled JScript .NET DLLs which generate different sorts of reports (e.g. through automation). This results in a continuous increase of the 'Private Bytes' performance counter of the application and finally ends in a crash after 2-3 weeks of operation. The implementation is done via application domains: pAppDomain = AppDomain::CreateDomain(...); pAppDomain -> CreateInstanceFromAndUnwrap(...) -> GetType() -> InvokeMember(...) pAppDomain -> Unload(pAppDomain); The 'InvokeMember' calls a function called 'LoadAndExecute' in a managed DLL (C++) which itself calls the pre-compiled Script DLLs like this: pAssembly = Assembly -> LoadFrom(...); pAssembly -> CreateInstance(...) -> GetType() -> InvokeMember(...); After the Script DLL has completed and returned control, the application domain for the managed and Script DLLs is unloaded in order to force a release of all involved resources.     - HTTP version compatibility Does anyone know if there's any issues involving versions of .Net Framework, Visual Studio and HTTP which might cause a compatibility problem? We currently using VS1.1 for our web apps (C#) and the app seems to be up and and down quite regularly on production and we're not quite sure why. Our techies told us that because we're (developers) using the wrong version of http, 1 instead of 1.1, which cause some sort of compatibility issues and/or memory leaks...blah blah blah. Without going into too much details and politics, I just like to know if there's any connections between Visual Studio versions, .Net Framework and the http versions which might cause compatibility issues.     - Optimization needed... Is Assembly code available? Hi, I need to optimize a close loop. Usually I would use assembly, but I don't event know if it's available to VB.NET. I'll explain the case and maybe some of you will be able to advise me. I have a byte() (byte array) containing about 100,000 elements (a bit less, but always is around 80,000-95,000). I need to take the data from it as int16 and compare the int16 to a reference value for now, I'm using a MemoryStream created from the byte(), a BinaryReader that reads from the MemoryStream (ReadInt16) and then compare the int16 to a reference value and return false if the int16 is greater than the reference value. if all the values are lower than the reference value, then the function returns true. If it returns after the first loop or so, it's ok, but if it runs through all the elements it's way too long. In assembly it would take way less time than that, because I could move the reference value in one of the CPU's register and leave it there as long as my loop runs and iterate directly in the byte() to get 2 bytes at a time. In VB.NET it's a function that stands in about 10 lines of code (maybe even lower), but it takes up to 50% of the CPU (when looked in the task manager) which is way too much because it runs very often. When it does not run (many other things are running in the app), the app takes about 1%-2% of the CPU, when this close loop starts being called, the app get's to 30%-50% of the CPU... it's a bit excessive due to the fact that the function is called about 8-10 times a second. thanks for your help ThunderMusic Tag: Custom Control as parent form Tag: 112052
