 - Thread Synchronization with ManualResetEvent Hi Everybody, I have some understanding problems, about (thread) synchronization. Hopefully somebody can explain it to me. I have the following two processes that use the same piece of hardware. However, they are not allowed to use it at the same time: Process 1: System.Threading.Thread Process 2: System.Timers.Timer elapsed event I have taken two approaches to synchronize the access of these two processes to the piece of hardware: 1. With Monitor.Enter(this) and Monitor.Exit(this) in a try-finally block of the hardware code 2. With ManualResetEvent WaitOne(), Reset() and Set() also in a try- finally block. Both these methods could not prevent the hardware from getting called twice. My own theories why this doesn't work are: 1. Monitor synchronizes different Threads, but an elapsed event runs on the same thread? 2. Two threads can both call WaitOne() at the same time, before one of them had the chance to call Reset(). They will both then pass WaitOne(), because the ManualResetEvent is for both still in the signaled state. ' I have written some test code to test situation 2 and indeed there seems to be a possibility of no synchronization. I have posted the code below. Can anybody explain me why this happens, and how I can get a synchronization for this?  - Performance Counter Next Value always returns zero (MS Exchange counter) Hi, I've got an application that users the PerformanceCounter class to retrieve perfmon values. Generally this works fine, but it seems the following counter always returns 0 for the nextvalue: MSExchange Intelligent Message Filter % UCE out of Total Messages Scanned _Total There is a raw value, and if I manually divide that by the value returned from the Total Messages Scanned, it shows the same % as in perfmon. .NET always returns 0 however. I am aware of an MS bug in article 324548 showing that disk values return 0, but is this the same problem with just different counters?  - question about localization and multi threading Hello, Suppose I have a windows form running in culture A, then the form creates a new thread (call a method foo for example) and makes it using culture B. When method foo is running in the new thread, it may try to change a label in the form. The constructor new System.Diagnostics.StackTrace(System.Threading.Thread targetThread, bool getSourceInformation) *requires* that the target thread be suspended. But System.Threading.Thread.Suspend (and .Resume) are currently labelled Obsolete and the documentation states that they are scheduled to be removed in a future version. What is planned to avoid the upcoming uselessness of this StackTrace ctor? Our suggestion would be another signature for the StackTrace constructor which takes a boolean flag indicating that you want the stack trace even if the thread is not suspended (implemented however they want, maybe by suspending the thread internally). All you are assured is that the returned stack trace was a true stack trace for the target thread *sometime* during the StackTrace ctor call. We are using this feature to perform statistical execution profiling of a thread from within the application itself (using another thread of course).  - Embed a cursor I have a managed C++ form app. I'm trying to change to a custom cursor when a tool is selected from a toolbar button. I've seen MANY references that say to add the custom cursor in Solution Explorer, then right-click and select properties, then change "Build Action" to "Embedded Resource". I existing cursors I wanted to use, so I copied them to my project folder, within Solution Explorer I added existing items. I now have "closehand.cur" and "openhand.cur" in my solution under Resource Files. If I go to the properties of these cursors I have: -Misc (Name) | closehand.cur Content | False File Type | Cursor Full Path | (path here...) Included In Project | True Relative Path | .\closehand.cur No "Build Actions". I'm using VS2005. I'm kinda stumped what I've done wrong. Even if I add a new cursor I have the same properties. The example has a class (SimpleClass) with a single property (SimpleProperty), and a single sub-class of it (SimpleSubClass) that overrides the property. The problem is that when accessing the emitted class using reflection it throws an 'AmbiguousMatchException'. (line 87 of the example code) Does anyone have a working example of overriding a property using Reflection Emit? Or can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to do this correctly?  - Control design problem I am creating a control "MyDropDownList" which derives from DropDownList. This control is nothing special, it only is supposed to work with dates. So i need to check that when the user adds something to the dropDown items, it should be valid date. This is where the problem is. Adding is done using dropDown.Items.Add(ListItem item) So i need to somehow override the behavior of the Add method, but i dont know how to do this. The Items property is of type ListItemCollection. I initially thought of creating a custom collection which derived from ListItemCollection but turms out that ListItemCollection is a sealed class. So i am in abit of a fix now.  - Click Once Install doesn't work on one PC I saw a couple posts on this but nothing really clear. I've got a very simple c# windows form application that basically is just a form and a label. There is only on pc that I'm having problems with (my bosses of course). When we run the set up it seems to download ok, but when it starts it only shows the icon in the task bar, and then dies right away and the form never shows.  - DataBinding Question I have a schema that defines a STRING variable: TimeLimit On my data collection form, there are two numericUpDown controls - one for hours, one for minutes. Internally, the program does the conversion, hours * 60 + minutes to get the TimeLimt in minutes. Is it possible to DataBind in this situation? How (can) one create psuedo field/OnChangedValue update so that when the user enters 1 in hours and 12 in minutes, that that value 72 is bound to the TimeLimit string, and conversely, the value 72 updates the two numericUpDown controls to 1 and 12 respectively?  - NetworkStream.Close() - Last bit of data not being sent Hello, This is my first post on google groups btw :) I am having an issue with the NetworkStream object. byte[] buffer = new byte[1024]; int bytesRead = 0; Networkstream ns = new networkstream(socket); while ((bytesRead = fileStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0) { ns.Write(buffer, 0, bytesRead); ns.Flush(); } ns.Close(); // <- The Issue This snippet for some reason does not send all the data in the buffer. If I remove the last line "ns.Close();" it works perfectly but causes other problems such as clients never getting disconnected. I notice there was a timeout option but I am unsure how how to use it correctly. How do I determine the time needed to send all the data? Also shouldn't the Flush() write to the stream. What this is for is a basic webserver. I browser requests a specific file and I load it and send it to them. That is what the outcome is supposed to be. Any help would be appreciated!  - Help - use of PerformanceCounter for monitoring heartbeat? I have a C# .NET 1.1 application where I need to monitor heartbeat requests from an external system - the external system (which I cannot otherwise access) is going to send a message to my application on a periodic basis to let me know it is still functional, and my application needs to monitor those messages, sending an email notification if it doesn't receive one within some configured interval. This seems like a good candidate for use of performance counters within my application and MOM to monitor the counter values, as this isn't data that necessarily needs to be persisted, but I'm not sure which type of PerformanceCounter would apply to this scenario. I really don't need to know the average or total number of messages received - I need to know either when I received the last message or how many I received in a fixed interval of time.  - ApplicationException in TimerBase.AddTimerNative method. Hello. I'm developing a module in .Net for a program that's made in c++. With a new version of this program I started getting strange exceptions in my module. I found out that the exceptions originated in the AddTimerNative method of the TimerBase class. Using Reflector I've found out that this is an unmanaged native method in the framework itself. I'm using .Net 2.0. I've had two different messages on the ApplicationExceptions: "Error in the application" (very helpfull....) and "Overlapped I/O operation is in progress." Does anyone have some idea what the problem might be? To clarify, the developers on the main application say they have changed nothing about how they load and execute .NET modules. To make things even more confusing, it's not consistent, sometimes I get this exception upon starting on the module, other times that works fine. And these exceptions only show up in release builds of the software, it suns fine in debug mode on my machine. Any help in finding out what on earth is happening would be appreciated.  - How to sign satellite assembly with .pfx file I have an application using strong names. VS signs the application when compiling the assembly file. After that I create localized satellite assembly files manually from my makefile. Until now I used .snk file to sign the assemblies. Using it was easy to sign the satellite assembly files when creating them using AL.exe AL.exe /keyf:"MyFile,snk" ... Now when I switch .pfx files I can not use /keyf optiosn any more. AL.exe does not accept .pfx files. I tried signtool.exe but it does not sign the satellite assembly files. How can I sign my satellite assembly files?  - Calling wsHttpBinding service under IIS Hello, I am attempting to call a single WCF wsHttpBinding service under IIS from two seperate Web Sites on the same server. Unfortunately, it appears that only one can communicate to the WCF service at a time returning "WSHttpBinding_IMyService Error: The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state." I suspect that it is because IIS is, by default, using the same IP address for both Web Sites while being a client calling the service, even though this server has multiple IP addresses, because I can call the server from two different Web Sites if they are on different computers. Is there a way to explicitly set the client IP address to use within the web.config file (under <system.serviceModel> section)?  - license question I am working at a company where I am the only .net programmer. I want to be able to test sql server 2000 t-sql commands using Visual Studio.net 2005 professional version. I have read articles from Microsoft saying that you should not test on a production server. I would like to be able to install sql server 2000 on my workstation so that I can run my tests on a 'test' sql server environment. My company only has two SQL Server 2000 licenses and they do not think that I can install sql server 2000 on my workstation since this would require another license? Thus based upon my professiaonl version of visual studio.net 2005, can I install sql server 2000 as a 'development' platform only? If so, can you point to a url that will show me I can do this? If not, what would if cost for my company to let me install sql server 2000 on my workstation for development purposes? My company gets a Microsoft discount. Thanks! You are better off asking this in one of the forums for mail e.g.
Microsoft.public.mail.misc

However, you can also look in the help files in Outlook Express for "Export
messages" and in Windows Mail for "Import outlook express"
