 - October 2003 .NET Framework SDK Documentation Update Hi, Is anybody here able to install the October 2003 SDK Documentation update available on this page: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2EAEB501-C197-4892-9C50-8F6BE1B0D4E0&displaylang=en I got an error message saying that "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the updgrade patch may update a different version of the program.  - System.IO.PathTooLongException Hi, (This is a repost - I posted this last week, but misspelled my email alias.) The documentation states that this "exception is thrown when a pathname or filename is longer than the system-defined maximum length". In my case, this max. length is 260 characters on WinXP.  - Problem installing .Net Framework SP2 I have 1.1 of the framework with SP1 already installed on my machine and am trying to install the .Net Framework Service Pack 2. I get this message: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Tried it on another machine with just 1.1 on it with no service packs and still get the same message, I also have the compact framework SP1 installed.  - XmlDocument read from Network Stream I have been using the following code (successfully) to read Xml formated text packets from a TCP stream. The output from the server stream consists of a sequence of well formed Xml documents written to the output stream. We are willing to pay $ to any expert (e.g. MVP) consultant who has to time to help us track down this problem. (we will discuss rates if you can prove your expertise, and problem solving approach). The code below is for the client that is reading the stream. All this worked well, as long as long delays were between each "packet". But when multiple packets are sent in quick succession, it is dropping packets. I have been trying to do this more "correctly" with using a XmlTextReader, but with no luck. E.g.  - race conditions caused by Thread.Abort I have been looking for ways to prevent asynchronous Thread.Abort calls from wreaking havoc in my code. I'm working on an assembly, implemented in Managed Extensions for C++, that makes unmanaged calls and often needs to free resources associated with those calls: bool allocated = false; try { ... // Allocate some resources in unmanaged code allocated = AllocateUnmanagedResources(); ... } __finally { // Only free resources if allocation was successful if (allocated) FreeUnmanagedResources(); } This code should work fine if the thread running it is not aborted. However, asynchronously aborting the thread can lead to two problems: - The ThreadAbortException can be thrown from inside the __finally block, causing the resources to be leaked. This possibility is noted in the Thread.Abort documentation. - The ThreadAbortException can be thrown after a successful call to AllocateUnmanagedResources but before the assignment to the boolean variable. In that case, the code in the __finally block isn't aware of the current state, so the resources are leaked. Both of these scenarios seem to be the result of deficiencies in the .NET Framework and/or CLR: 1) __finally blocks aren't guaranteed to run to completion 2) There doesn't seem to be a way to create an "unabortable" block of code. Obviously, this kind of feature could be abused (and would preclude the need for (1) above), but it seems necessary in order to allow clean- up code to know the state of the application. Anyway, I'm looking for ways to eliminate the race conditions described above.  - RunDll or remote activation needed In the .NET Framework Developer's Guide there is a page titled Building a Host application. Within this page there is a note: Unlike COM, remoting does not start the host or server application for you. This is an important difference between .NET remoting and remote activation in COM. I need this functionality. I need to be able to start a seperate win32 process and communicate with it. The trick is that there must not be any need for configuration files or such. I could approach the problem one of two ways. Either my client dll can reference the server exe (but referencing an exe is not allowed by the IDE). Or I can reference and execute a dll. The reason I want to reference it is to make sure that VS always puts a copy of it where I can find it, so I can execute it. Another possibility is to make the server app also a COM server and just register it that way, but this is not managed and VS will not register an exe this way. Tag: Caspol Issue Tag: 62948

 - Accessing Form Controls From Threaded Delegate via Async Callbacks. I have a Form that hosts a control (used for visual feedback). From this form a Class is created. This Class has several events/delegates that are triggered by a Socket (which is a member of the class)'s Async Callbacks. [Eg OnConnected, etc ]. From within this delegate eg. OnConnected, OnReceivedData and OnClose I need a way to be able to provide visual feedback to the form. I setup an event/delegate on the Form and made it public so others could access it. A refernece to the Form was passed to the Class when it was created. However the minute i call Parent.Invoke (Parent.VisualMethod,......) the program hangs. Trapped inside a Try catch to catch any exceptions the program just hangs. I've stepped through the code and when I step into that line the program and debugger never come back. I've tried Control.Invoke, new DelegateMethod(parameters), Parent.VisualControl.Methodstoupdate Maybe there is something here I dont quite fully understand.  - host normal jscript or vbscript in .net I'd like to be able to run normal JScript or VBScript (not .Net) from inside a dotnet application, and let the script access certain object at least through COM. I don't want to use the jscript.net VsaEngine implementation because I need to compile and run ALOT of small bits of code and memory is an issue when you can't unload those emitted assemblies.  - working with TCP/IP I have a client server application where the client sends mouse movements and text to the server like "MVU 15" would move the mouse up 15 pixels and "CHAR a" would send an 'a' to the current application. The problem I am having is that when I try to send a string of chars I get multiple sends when I read from the TCP/IP stream for instance on one read I might get "CHAR aCH" then the next read I will get "AR bCH" which obviously breaks my code. I am using the following code to send the data --------------------------- System.IO.StreamWriter NStream; client = new System.Net.Sockets.TcpClient(); client.Connect(System.Net.IPAddress.Parse(strIPAddress),6254); NStream = new System.IO.StreamWriter(client.GetStream()); NStream.Write(s); NStream.Flush(); --------------------------- and the following to read the data --------------------------- skt = listener.AcceptSocket(); byte[] b = new byte[15]; res = skt.Receive(b); ---------------------------------------- I was thinking i will pad the data to 15 chars but it doesn't seem to be a problem for most things, but that might have been a result of the speed it was sent.  - pwdLastSet and other Active Directory Date types Has anyone been able to get the "date" properties (pwdLastSet, lastLogon, etc.) from Active Directory using JUST the native .Net tools (no com interop with activeds)? When I try to do that, I get strange results. That's fine, I can use a DateTime.FromFileTime, but it comes back with a date that is about a day off from what I get back using the interop (not just the UTC time difference). I get similar results on other accounts (sometimes it is very close, other times it is WAY off. When I use the Microsoft sample "Active Directory Browser" (adsvw.exe) it shows this value should be 127133856717681145. Again, similar results on other accounts. Samples: above code adsvw.exe 127129877390570772 126626200214730160 126625284477162600 126625284477162600 (yes, this one comes out the SAME!!!)  - Input panel with more then one form Hi, If my application has two forms and the user needs to fill in some textboxes on each of then, how may inputpanels do I need. When I put one on the first form it works fine, but if I put one on the second form as well, exceptions occeur. If I need only one, how can I enable it from the second form?  - Any suggestions to this notouch app issue? Hi I have developed a little windows forms wich is supposed to be deployed with NoTouch (smart client) technolgy. Since a nice GUI is essential for the app i have used transparency to give i at nice look. But then the framework wrap my nice gui in a standard form!!  - Issue arbitrary DOS commands Is there a way to issue an arbitrary DOS commands and see the output? The commands will be entered by the user into a text box. I want to be able to handle commands like DIR, COPY, DELETE, etc. I know I could write the code for each of these commands, but I won't necessarily know all of the possible commands that will be issued. I would like to take the text that the user enters into the text box and issue that command as if the process were at a Windows Command prompt. I have looked at System.Diagnostics.Process and System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo but that only seems to handle executing programs, not necessarily issuing commands.  - Databound Dropdownlist.... I have a databound dropdown list that is using a SQL database to pull an ID field (CVID) as the Value and a name field (ContractVehicle) as the Text. The dropdown populates perfectly from the database however when I attempt to submit the selection to the database using me.ddPMID.DataValueField I receive an error saying that string "CVID" cannot be converted to type integer. The Value field should contain integers as each of them are autonumbered by the database. The code I am using to populate the dropdownlist follows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  - Clearing the download cache on client machines Is there an elegant way to clear the download cache on a client machine? We are deploying a winforms browser and smart client application. Recently we made a mistake with versioning (we release a version with a very large number), and now our internal clients can't download a newer version. Since this is still in house we can install gacutil on people's machines and get it to clear the cache. But this got me thinking, what could we do if this happened with an internet deployed version of application? How does a normal end-user clear their download cache? We can't ask an end-user to install a utility, that would violate the entire purpose of creating a smart-client that runs at the internet trust level. We clearly can't get people to install gacutil.  - Asynchronous socket problem w/datagrid Hi All -- I am new to VB.Net so bear with me. I have an application where I need to connect to a remote tcp port synchronously, and then asynchronously wait for a data stream to come from the connection. As data comes in, I want to parse it and add it to a DataSet, to be displayed in a Windows Form Datagrid. To test the idea without fooling with the dataset/datagrid, I wrote my raw asynchronous response to a TextBox using a Receive/ReceiveCallback function pair, as per the MS examples. This works fine with no UI problems. Now that I have added the DataGrid into the mix, any time I do anything (click, scroll, select a cell, resize column) to the UI of the datagrid, it seems like the IO is blocking and the application freezes until some data gets passed and/or the MS Gods are satisfied. I'm not sure what's going on. If I turn off the I/O, the datagrid acts fine. If I don't try to populate the datagrid from my ReceiveCallback function, but rather with static data on Form_Load, that works fine too.  - Interacting with a service? Hey, I'm trying to build a component that satisfies the following properties: 1) only one component is ever created and it maintains its state 2) it can be accessed by any thread on the local machine simultaneously (I will do the synchronization myself since I want read/write locks) 3) the component is never deleted 4) I need to call some of its methods It seems like component services are the way to go (or maybe Windows services?) but I can't figure out how to keep the component alive without using JITA. And if I use JITA, synchronization is done for me. And if I use a Windows service, I don't seem to be able to call methods on it. Any suggestions of resources or ideas I can investigate?  - ISerializable and SerializableAttribute confusion Hi ! This question was discussed once, but the subject is still unclear: According to Jeffrey Richter article (http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/02/04/net/default.aspx) one can't serialize the type without declaring it with SerializableAttribute. At the same time, we have to impalement ISerializable if we need some custom serialization. In addition, we find the following in MSDN: "Apply the SerializableAttribute attribute even if the class also implements the ISerializable interface to control the serialization process." (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpref/html/frlrfSystemSerializableAttributeClassTopic.asp). From all this it can be concluded that ISerializable and SerializableAttribute are not intended to be used one instead of other, but in addition (if needed). However, in Marshal-By-Value Objects section (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpguide/html/cpconremotableobjects.asp) I find the following: "Marshal-by-value (MBV) objects declare their serialization rules (either by implementing ISerializable to implement their own serialization, or by being decorated with SerializableAttribute, which tells the system to serialize the object automatically)" The "or" there at the middle confuses me... How would i do this in this example? One way is to enclose each statement in a try catch itself, but this makes the code look terrible, whereby it was easy enought pre-,net with the on error resume next.  - Reference problems & custom controls disappearing Hi all, I really hope someone out there can help me as I've been tearing my hair out on this one for a good while and I'm getting really frustrated now! My problem is this - my custom controls periodically disappear from my project when I build it. First of I get the message about a missing dependency, then if I rebuild after that - the control just physically disappears from the form, and I get an object not found error when I run, (though sometimes when I rebuild the control can reappear) My background - I'm working in a small team of developers, we are using vb.net in visual studio with visual source safe. As I've said I've been battling with this for a while and have done some reading on this - I know that it is to do with references. Therefore I am trying to do what all the Microsoft articles I've read recommend with regard to references: - setting copy to local = true, using project references not file references, and setting the build order but to no avail. (Incidentally I still get this problem when using file references). Some more information - the custom controls are using a data access object, and this data access object is also being used by another object which the main form also uses. It is the reference to this data access object that is the one that that I get the message about the missing dependency. Please help - now to add insult to injury - I can not now even re-add my custom control from the toolbox.  - HELP - ".Net" user interface under Internet Explorer.. what to do ? Hello all, Once windows mmi programming was very easy - vb forms.. nice & easy. nowdays, our customers have became IE freaks !!! So, my question is, what is the best way to develop mmi in the ".Net" environment, over an intranet / lan environment. the first alternative is "Asp.Net".. though Microsoft is trying to push it very hard, to me the idea seems to be very wrong. I think that client code should be seperated from server code. Mixing client & server code (without even mentioning screen refreshe issues) does not feel right to me and my co-workers. The second alternative is pure html code (+xml islands). I dont like this idea... developing html in the 21 century seems a bit retro and difficult. My last alternative is ".Net Winforms" under IE. does anoyone has experience with this alternative? theoreticly it seems to be a perfect idea.. is it? Hi all, I understand the concept of static fields and members inside a class and the fact that static members belong to the class rather than to an instance of the class. I also understand that each class that calls a static member of another class takes a copy of that member into its own thread and therefor it's safe to call a static member concurrency wise. Filehandling on .NET is not windows compatible for NTFS and FAT Hi, On the file handling methods, if you are dealing with files (Windows filesystem is case INSENSITIVE) yet when you specify file A.BLAH and its a.blah on windows, you get FileNotFoundException. If this by design for cross platform and different file systems or a bug? Shouldnt this be defaulting to INSENSITIVE instead of SENSITIVE on windows NTFS (for FATxx for that matter)? Thanks.  - TCP/IP app Desgin Question this is a question on how to design an TCP Listener application. background: There will be several threads that listen on several ports (one per port). when another app requests to connect, the connection will be accepted. then messages will be received and passed to the main thread via a delegate or event for processing. Messages will also be sent in return to the other application in an asynchronous manner. Questions: 1) from what it seems to me, delegates are thread safe but events are not. is this true? should i use delegates to call back to the main thread rather than events? 2) what is a clean way to have the main thread pass a message to a listener thread to write messages?  - Trace Switch Issue Hi, I'm having a strange problem with the BooleanSwitch loaded from a config file.  <configuration> <system.diagnostics> <switches> <add name="switchOn" value="1" /> </switches> <trace autoflush="false" indentsize="4"> <add name="TextListener" type="System.Diagnostics.TextWriterTraceListener, System" initializeData="trace.log" /> </trace> </system.diagnostics> </configuration> // The code BooleanSwitch s = new BooleanSwitch("switchOn", "bla"); Console.WriteLine(s.Enabled); s.Enabled is always false, regardless the value in config file. If I remove the trace element from the config file, s.Enabled is initialized correctly according to its value. I've tried the different permutations of full type name for the TextWriterTraceListener: type="System.Diagnostics.TextWriterTraceListener, System, version=1.0.5000.0, culture=neuture, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" But the result is always the same.  - Extracting .NET framework 1.1 failed I'm trying to extract the files from the dotnetfx.exe file with the /T:<path> and /C switches, but every time I try, it pops up an error saying "Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted Cabinet file." I've downloaded and tried it on two different PC's and I'm constantly getting the same error.  - Regex - NFA, DFA, POSIX - seeking clarification The framework help says: "Microsoft .NET Framework regular expressions incorporate the most popular features of other regular expression implementations such as those in Perl and awk. Designed to be compatible with Perl 5 regular expressions, .NET Framework regular expressions include features not yet seen in other implementations, such as right-to-left matching and on-the-fly compilation." Perl is traditional NFA (non-POSIX), while awk (and most of its derivatives) are DFA (which are mostly POSIX anyway), so the help is a little ambiguous regarding the nature of Regex's engine ..NET's Regex doesn't (seem) to implement the POSIX longest-leftmost mandate. Jeffrey E. F. Friedl explains this mandate using the expression "(to|top)(o|polo)?(gical|o?logical)" and an input of "topological" (ignore the quotes) A POSIX engine would be expected to return "top", "", and "ological" for the subexpressions (see Mr. Friedl's book for an explanation of why). However, .NET's Regex returns "to", "polo", and "gical" So, is it NFA, DFA, semi-POSIX, or ...?  - Register Primary Interop Assembley I have a Windows Form app that uses the Windows Media Player Active-X control. It works fine on my development machine, but on a client computer the app crashes becuase the wmppia.dll hasn't been registered and installed in the global assembly cache. I 've looked around and can't find a way to automaticlly register the wmppia.dll during installation. So as a test, I followed the instructions the do it manually on a non-development machine that had Framework 1.1.4322 on it. I can "regasm c:\Program Files\MyProgram\wmppia.dll" with no problem. But the Global Assembly Cache installer; Gacutil.exe is missing. Isn't this supposed to come with the Framwork? If not, how can I expect my end users to have it?  - File stuck open after ThreadAbortException Hello, I am having a problem in which a file can get stuck open when a thread that is attempting to write to it gets aborted (ThreadAbortedException occurs). The log file gets stuck open until the process is shut down (cannot delete file from Windows Explorer, for example). My test application stops execution with: An unhandled exception of type 'System.IO.IOException' occurred in mscorlib.dll Additional information: The process cannot access the file "c:\abort_test.txt" because it is being used by another process. I figured I was not closing things properly, but I think I'm OK. I created a simple test application and am still stumped.  - Unhandled Exception handler I'm trying to install an UnhandledException handler in a Console application. I have done the following as the first few lines of code in Main: AppDomain currentDomain = AppDomain.CurrentDomain; currentDomain.UnhandledException += new UnhandledExceptionEventHandler(HandleTheException); Then my handler is defined: public static void HandleTheException ( object sender, UnhandledExceptionEventArgs e ) { Console.WriteLine ( "Exception: {0}", (Exception)e.ExceptionObject).Message ); Console.ReadLine ( ); } When an UnhandledException is thrown and I have the JIT debbugging options all UN checked I still get a dialog that has "Common Language Runtime Debugging Services" in the title bar and a message saying that the application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Click OK to terminate that application or Click CANCEL to debug the application. If I click OK then my handler gets invoked. Is there any way to disable this dialog box? I have compiled some codes under .Net framework 1.0 and
run it on a PC with W2K/.Net framework 1.1. The
application uses Internet Deployment, and Caspol was set
correctly. However, the application couldn't see it.

I have tested under different environmnts as follows:
1. W2K/.Net framework 1.0 (OK)
2. W2K/.Net framework 1.1 (FAILED)
3. WXP/.Net framework 1.0 (OK)
4. WXP/.Net framework 1.1 (OK)

Any body knows how to fix this issue?
