    - Way to specify timeout with async. thread operations? (BeginReceiv The documentation specifies that a Socket's SendTimeout and ReceiveTimeout properties have no effect on asynchronous socket operations (BeginSend, BeginReceive). I must use these operations to take advantage of the I/O Completion Port threads, but also need to have the callback called if/when a timeout occurs.     - Multi-form PocketPC App loses focus. Hi all, I'm developing an app for PocketPC 2003 Second Edition using vb.net, compact framework 1 SP 3 which integrates with TomTom Navigator. (*apoologies if this is the wrong place to post.. couldn't find a section for CF*) To allow the end-user to switch between the apps, I've configured the PDA's physical buttons - one to start my application, the other to start TomTom. With both apps running, the buttons then serve as a means of switching between them. However: I have a problem handling multiple forms in my app... when a user closes a form in my application application focus jumps back to TomTom! It seems as though PPC just goes back to displaying the previous form - irrespective of whether it was from the same application. For example, the following behaviour occurs: - 1) User runs my application by pressing Hardware Button 1 on PDA. 2) Users presses hardware button 2 to look at TomTom. 3) User presses hardware button 1 to return to my application. 4) User presses an on-screen software button which loads another form to display some data. 5) User closes this new form. 6) Instead of reverting to the previous form in my application it suddenly jumps to TomTom. Any ideas/suggestions about handling multi-form pocketpc application where the user can switch between apps would be greatly appreciated. My only current idea is to do everything on one form and show/hide different elements to emulate multi-form behaviour! (Not something I like the sound of) Thanks in advance, Wheeldo.     - ASP.Net, Out of Memory We have ASP.Net web applications running on a Windows 200 Server using the .Net Framework 1.0. We have been experiencing out of memory errors being displayed on the web page after the application runs for sometimes days. I have attempted to adjust the settings in the machine.config file setting the <processModel> memoryLimit attribute up from the default 60 (%) to 80(%). Around this same time we upped the memory on this server to 4 Gig. The application seemed to run for longer before getting the out-of-memory errors, but they still happen before we have to re-boot the server. Should this memoryLimit be bumped up even more? Are there other attributes in the <processModel> that should be adjusted that would help? How do we go about tracking down what is taking up all the memory? Tag: AudioOutputStream Tag: 106493

    - Having problems with loading data using WebRequest. I have a WinForm UserControl that I am hosting in an ASP.NET web page. In the UserControl, I am trying to load an image into a GDI Image object using HttpRequest. The problem that I am having is after instantiating the HttpRequest object, I call the GetResponse method of the request. Right after this call, all code that follows is skipped. No exception is thrown. I can't understand what is happening here. Can someone help?     - SqlDecimal inconsistencies with Decimal Hello there! We have found some rather odd behaviour in the SqlDecimal type, which is not displayed in the standard Decimal type. It appears that mathematical methods choose a precision and scale that is inappropriate for the result. Not only is the result truncated to 6 dp, but the rounding is also incorrect. This does not occur in Decimal. Can anyone either tell me what I am doing wrong, or point me in the direction of a workaround or fix. We can't use Decimal since our requiments are for a SQL standard of accuracy in our mathematical operations. I have enclosed some VB to replicate it and the output from the program.     - Adding XmlNode(s) to an XmlDocument I've got a problem I can't work out - I had a browse on the net and couldn't find exactly the answer I was after... How can I add an XmlNode to a loaded XmlDocument? I know I can write an XML file with XmlTextWriter, but rather than pass the document to simply add one document and rewrite the entire file, is there a simple way to just add a node to the document? .AppendChild looks good, but it needs an XmlNode which I can't create, because its an abstract class.     - Setup Error: Failed to load resources from resource file - very wierd solution I occasionally started to see a jit pop up on my windows forms / remoting application when it was being run on a windows 2003 box. I turned off jit, and got the error "Setup Error: Failed to load resources from resource file". People w/ similar probs said to look at what the app was trying to access using sysinternal's filemon.exe. It's amazing to see all the crap your app is accessing or trying to access. Some of the files it was trying to access was worker.ini and worker.dll. Worker.exe is another application that this app talks to w/ .NET Remoting. BUT I don't have a worker.dll or a worker.ini !!!! What the hell is the dotnet framework doing?? So I decided to put an empty worker.dll and a worker.ini file next to the error prone app exe, and whola! No more error. I turned out that it needed an empty worker.dll file. So why is this app looking for a dll and an ini that don't exist and are never referenced in any of my code? And why would putting an empty dll file fix this? I ran filemon.exe on my development machine, and sure enough, my app tries to access this dll and ini file - but it doesn't have this setup error. very strange stuff . . . . -Lars Tag: AudioOutputStream Tag: 106449

    - Custom Security Question / Guidance I am in need of adding security to my application and was wondering what could help. I am already familiar with the Identity, Principal, and PrincipalPermission objects. Outlined below is what I am looking to try and implement. I need to have Roles and Rights that I assign to a user (in a custom security application db). Example: User Role Rights Bob DataItem View, Read, Write, Create (Full Control) John DataItem View In our code we would do something like this: If (User.IsInRole("DataItem")) { // do something... } However what I need to be able to do is also something like the following: if (User.IsInRole("DataItem") && User.HasPermission("Write")) { // Show the save button } else { // Don't show save button.. } This is just a very small example... We are in the process of building a large application with several thousand users and we have multiple levels and type of security needed. To help keep the number of roles down to a minimum we want to couple it with Rights (or permissions) similar to how most network security works. We could probably just extend the Principal object to handle this but I want to fish for other options as well if anybody has run into any. Since there are tons of objects in the framework there may already be something I can inherit from or use that does this. I just have not been able to find it.     - Can't UseEncryption with MSMQ I'm trying to encrypt the body of my msmq messages by setting the UseEncryption property on the message. This throws an exception UnsupportedFormatNameOperation. I'm using msmq for ipc on a single server, the queues are all private and there is no AD domain - the server is a member of an NT4 domain. I'm specifying the queue as ".\private$\QueueName" and everything works fine until I enable the UseEncryption switch. I haven't been able to find any info in MSDN relating to this; msdn just says the requirements are the standard platforms (Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, etc). The alternative is to encrypt the data myself prior to sending but that seems like a lot of effort when UseEncryption should be able to provide the same functionality.     - WebResponse.Close() not disposing unmanaged resource? I have a .net app that uses a lot of calls to System.Net.WebRequest, and it appears to be leaking memory. I've spent a couple of days working with the excellent .net memory profiler from Scitech (http://www.scitech.se/) trying to find the leak, and all I've managed to find is that the win32 (unmanaged) heap seems to keep growing. I wrote this (pretty non-realistic) code in a test app to try duplicating the problem: while(true) { try { System.Net.WebRequest req=System.Net.WebRequest.Create(@"http://chris/TestWebService/TestService.asmx?WSDL"); System.Net.WebResponse resp=req.GetResponse(); resp.Close(); } catch(Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()); } } Note that this was just inside a button click event of a winform application. The exception condition never got hit, and the app just kept hammering away at my local web server. Checking the profiler, I saw the number of undisposed instances of System.Net.HttpWebResponse, System.Net.ConnectStream, and System.Threading.ManualResetEvent increasing with each iteration. Shouldn't the resp.Close() statement release the resources? There's nothing in the documentation about doing any sort of disposal on the request object, so it appears that only the response needs to be disposed, and so far, that doesn't seem to be happening. I've also tried the above code casting the response to an HTTPWebResponse, but that has no effect. I also tried removing the resp.Close() statement, which had no effect (the undisposed objects still showed up in the profiler). Is there something else I need to do to fix this memory leak?     - Migrating to 2.0: Configuration Manager and Active Config are missing... Hi, I migrated one of my solutions(VB.NET 1.1, containing a Windowds Forms project and a Class Library project) to the 2.0 Framework using the inbuild-wizard. After migrating the Configuration Manager and Active Config (in the properties of the solution) are missing in my solution. I am able to Customize the Build menu and have the menu-option "Configuration Manager" back, but it is disabled... So the only builds I am able to make are Debug-builds, no Release... :-/ Does anybody knows how to get around this problem?     - [OT] MSN messenger problem Apparently MSN messenger is installed by default on Windows XP. Anyway at some unknow unknow stage I signed in at work. Other cowrokers could use my accoun when I'm away, etc...     - Custom channel sink without using RemotingConfiguration.Configure Is there any way to implement custom channel sinks while remoting without using the RemotingConfiguration.Configure() method? I really don't want to store the data in a .config file as I need to change the configuration parameters, and do not want to have to write a new file each time. I have found plenty of examples of using custom channel sinks with the Configure method, but none that do not use this. Is this possible? If so, can someone provide an example of how to do this? I am about ready to use Reflector to see what the .Configure() method does, but I am sure it is quite in depth and would take significant time to digest.     - .NET 2.0 Update Issues with Norton I uploaded the latest update from Microsoft (Microsoft .NET 2.0 - November 18, 2005) and ran Norton 1-Button Checkup after rebooting. The program reported 10 missing program files in the .NET 2.0 directory. After repairing them, the same errors keep coming back. What is going on here?     - StreamReader.OpenText and Unicode I am trying to read log files into a String but sometimes the log file doesn't contain encoding marks at the beginning of the file to indicate to readers what kind of file it is (Unicode, UTF8 etc). For example, COM+.log in the windows directory does not contain any encoding marks but the text is written as Unicode. For these instances, what are good work-arounds to auto-detect the log file as Unicode and read the file as a String? Notepad.exe does this and I am wondering how they go about auto-detecting the encoding when encoding marks do not exist.     - Installation question Just installed (actually re-installed) NET Framework. After reboot my Windows start-up has been changed. First, let me say I'm using Windows XP Home version, and prior to the install when I started the computer it just would come up with my desktop. I had it configured this way as there are only 2 of us using the computer. Now, I've got to "log-in" with my name, and when my screen saver activates, it forces me to select my name again...     - Suggestions for a architecture I have a database table with columns of URLs and datatimes. At the precise datetime I would like to a perform HTTP Get request to the URL. There may be multiple requests to different URLs that need to be performed at the same time. It doesn't seem efficient to have a service polling the database every second looking for requests to process. I have been doing a bit of research into MSMQ and SQL Service Broker in SQL Server 2005.     - FileSystemWatcher on startup? Hi. I am supporting a Windows service that uses FileSystemWatcher to monitor an inbound directory for new files. If the service is shutdown and files are dropped to the inbound directory, those files are not picked up by FileSystemWatcher at service startup. This is a rare circumstance where the service will be down, but it does happen occasionally during maintenance windows. The solution to this problem that is in the code now is that a Timer has been introduced to watch the directory as well. That forced the addition of some thread mgmt (lock{}) so that both the timer and the FileSystemWatcher (on separate threads) don't process the same file.     - Large page faults issue in .net application I've PerfMon-ed our application for several days now and it consistently averages 2000 Page Faults/sec, and accumulates on average about 4 mill page faults during 35 mins. During the same monitoring time of 35 mins, there is never any sustained occurence of hard page faults -as a matter of fact, almost on avg 98+ % of the entire time the app is experiencing soft page faults. The processor rarely ever gets over 70-80% for a sustained period of 30 sec during the entire 35 mins. % Time in GC averages 3%. Besides stats, we also notices that our Working Set gets consistently trimmed every couple of minutes in the order of 20-30 MB and sometimes even more. I also see this is directly correlated to the managed object heap bytes being trimmed as well - exactly the same graph line behavior. When WS gooes down, available memory goes up. I also see that the largest number of gc collections are Gen 0s, followed by Gen 1s and the smallest Gen 2s. We monitored a slew of other Perf counters - so if u need any other info to help, I can supply the perf counter values readily. QUESTION - How do I make sense of the page faults being so excessive...? Can you supply some info and or documentation to help me determine if this is a good, bad or expected behavior for .NET apps...? I tried researching in lot of places but no luck to help me. Almost every doc I find outlines that if you have hard page faults, that is a bad thing, while soft page faults are ok. (Sustained period = we selected 30 secs - example -> so if the %Processor Time is over 80% for 30 secs or more we would get concerned). Tag: AudioOutputStream Tag: 106361

    - ISAPI extension change .Net default stack size Okay this is ugly, but here it goes. We have an unmanaged IIS ISAP extension. We use the worker thread approach and spin up our own threads creating the stack size that we want. Later in our code we have a C# module that get's executed and we begin executing managed code here. Inside of the managed code we we start a thread using the below approach (for timeout). The problem is that there are certin cases where the new thread we created is running out of stack. Sure if we had an exe we could use editbin to increase the default size of the stack. But I don't think this works for dll's. Is there anything we can do to change the default size of the stack that will be created in the C# module? It is important to note that the C# module at the end of the day executes some other unmanaged C++ code. There is no recursion to eliminate there is just a very structured and complicated application (in both good and bad ways but we really can't change too much here). Our other thought is to rewrite C# module in good old unmanaged C++ so that we can make calls that allow use to create threads of arbitrary size.     - Versioning 1.1/2.0 I could need some advice on how to work with a project that should work with framework 1.1 and 2. Currently i work on a VS solution with about fifteen projects within. Most of them we convert to VS2005 but a few of them are base libraries that are used in VS 2003 solutions / dotnet 1.1 as well. To handle this, we now maintain a version of the solution/projects files for each version. How can i make sure, that when you work on the VS2005 projects you won't mess up the code for 2003? Two things i have in mind are - Configure the base library projects to only use ISO-1 csharp features? (i don't know even know if that setting is really exactly the same as dotnet1.1) - Set all references of this libraries back to the 1.1 framework dlls? (but i have no glue if that is such an good idea to mix the versions and then it is compiled with dotnet 2.0 csc anyway) Did i miss some project setting for the target framework so i could just say "this specific project has to work with and is compiled/compilable on framework 1.1"? btw: for specific code for dotnet2 that honors deprecated/new functions i have defined a constant on each vs2005 project DOTNET_2 and then #if DOTNET_2 #else #endif handling in the code. Isn't there really no way to determine the framework on compile time in the code? When i think back to C++ times, microsoft placed all kind of #defines into the headers with most of them noone had an idea what they could be good for so how come i don't find some that says "I_AM_DOTNET_2_AND_COMPILED_ON_A_MACHINE_WITH_OFFICE_AND_SQLSERVER_INSTALLED" or something like that :) Tag: AudioOutputStream Tag: 106356

    - Trouble Selecting a ListViewItem Programmatically I know it, I know it. It's come up a lot. I've done the Googling, but the standard answer doesn't do what I expect it to. For the record, the standard answer is: "Set the Selected property of a ListViewItem to true." I also know from MSDN that the selection won't really take effect until the ListView has focus. My specific problem is that setting item.Select = true doesn't actually select my item (or at least, doesn't highlight it). I'm implementing a search feature, and the highlighting is kind of important. Even more curious, Microsoft's own C# code sample at ms-help://MS.VSCC.v80/MS.MSDN.v80/MS.NETDEVFX.v20.en/CPref17/html/P_System_Windows_Forms_ListViewItem_Selected.htm (might need to get there through VS2005 documentation) illustrates my problem exactly. The first list item does not get selected on list population, even though the code tells it to do so. Note that the username contains an "@"-character. I tried two ways. Neither does work. 1.     - System.Xml.Serialization - deserializing xml to types created in dynamic assembly Hi All, I've been working on a saved dynamic assembly that holds all the types and corresponding xml serialization attributes I need to deserialize xml documents into objects. You might wonder why I would choose a dynamic assembly over simply coding the types at compile time - the simple answer is I don't know what the types will be before hand and I only have an xml schema (from which I build the dynamic assembly) with various attributes that change frequently. Since the schema only defines data types (methods,events,delegates could probably be defined within xs:appinfo tags but in my case they are not), I needed a way to add functionality to these dynamically created classes which were otherwise, nothing more than just data stubs. The method I chose was to define (at compile-time) abstract base classes from which classes in my dynamic assembly could inherit. Now these simple data-stub classes had a complement of methods to enable them to do more than simply hold data in fields. Unfortunately, it seems that since my dynamic classes now inherit from classes defined at compile-time, the xml serializer gets confused (see error and stack trace below). It worked fine before I added the inheritance - maybe I need a reference (somehow) to the hardcoded assembly containing the types I inherit from in my dynamic assembly. Any suggestions?     - Uniformaty Now I know that VS2005 has master pages and webparts etc etc. However, at present I am forced to work with VS2003 so I have a couple of basic questions related to the subject matter for which I am hoping to acheive inspirationan and or direction. I want to create my new site with a high degree of consistancy and managability. The perfect way to do this is to choose something other than asp.net 2003 to do it in, like I dont know , lets say front page for example where I can use dynamic templates to create editable areas much the same as I do on 2005 ( If i were able to use it ). But thats not the case. So, Im trying to devise a way to acheive this. As far as I am aware, I cant inherit aspx forms, so this leaves me with ( AFAIK ) creating a template to copy from and then altering the code for each new page. I dont want to use Includes or Frames, OR MS Positioning, so Im thinking about using Flow layout panels and adding custom controls to do the menus etc. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom for me before I go ahead and get myself in a whole heap of trouble ?     - Security settings for intranet zone Hi, I have a problem executing a managed application from a server's share - hopefully, someone can give me a hint. The application and all DLLs are signed with a key, therefore have a strong name. Now, I was assuming that if I create a code group under the "Organization" level with that strong name as criterium and the FullTrust permission set, my assemblies should be able to access all ressources (including reflection which is causing all the trouble); but when executing the application, I get a SecurityException. I tried setting that policy to LevelFinal and Exclusive, but still that nasty SecurityExceptions keep popping up. The only way I found to make it work is when I set the LocalIntranet zone security setting to the highest level. But of course, customers will not be wanting to grant full access to just any assembly on the intranet. Therefore, my questions are: 1. How does the zone security setting affect the runtime policies? 2. How can I grant my application FullTrust permission set, but only my application? Thanks for any hints on this! I have an ASP.NET application, which call a method which has to launch a batch. To do it, I use an instance of the Process class. But when I try to execute the start() method of this instance, it throws an exception : " Win32Exception (0x80004005): Access is denied" I think there is a way by using the System.Security.Permissions namespace, but I can't find how to do it.
