    - Alternatives to RealProxy This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------030705080200040303030101 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I'm wondering what alternatives, if any, there are to realproxy for intercepting methods on objects. I'm trying to create code which can at run time change what methods do what. So far, the only way I know of doing this is with a RealProxy which parses the IMessage to call a desired function. I'm particularly concerned about performance, and it seems that the TransparentProxy consumes vast amounts of resources, two orders of magnitude, even if my RealProxy does nothing. I made a small trivial performance suite to test different invocation methods and interception techniques. It adds 1 to 40 as many times as it can in 5 seconds. Results are as follows; Direct: 66292785 counts Direct MarshalByRefObj: 54974002 MethodInfo: 4242595 InvokeMethod: 3425953 Fake RealProxy: 581618 RealProxy: 266322 -Fake RealProxy is a InvokeMethod which calls a static test instance & returns a pre-existing ReturnMessage. It does no thinking, just runs on any InvokeMessage. -Real Proxy calls RemotingServices.ExecuteMessage. -I'm not sure if this will actually work, but i've included the sample. Anyways, I'm wondering what alternatives are available. I think IDynamicProperty/IDynamicMessageSink might have some similar capabilities. I dont really understand either of these at all, and havent found good docs either. The other thing I was thinking of was generating wrapper assemblies. Use reflection to parse in the entirity of a user's assembly, and emit a wrapped version, and have the user's app read from the wrapped assembly. I'm not sure how assemblies parallel to DLL's, but it follows the same idea. The immediate problem I see with this is that anything within the assembly wont be accessing the wrapped versions. If one class has an instance of another class, it'll be the unwrapped version. Is there any way around this? This is really my ideal solution.     - IsDate flaw/bug ? In my project I'm using trying to use the IsDate function to check if the user correctly formated the date in a textbox. The amount of time it takes for the function to return a value initially is over 3 seconds.all subsequent calls to the function take a fraction of a second. Does anyone have an idea what might be going on?     - .NET Framework 2.0 I couldn't spot a better forum to post this. If there is one, then please set me straight. Can anyone point me at a good description of what's new in V2.0 of the framework. There's assorted stuff around about changes to ASP and Visual Studio, but I haven't seen a lot about the new framework itself, apart from some on MSDN about generics. I also heard about improvements in Remoting and Web Services. Clearly this may change, but based upon beta 1 and recent CTP releases it must be firming up.     - how to allow edit property in PropertyGrid with only Set method Hi! Within my class (say class A) I have read-only property returning reference to object of type B (since I do not want other to assign another reference to this property). I have created a TypeConverter for class B and I want to allow users to edit properties exposed by object B. And with subproperties its works fine, but property within object A is still "grayed", so User cannot write string value in this field. My GetCreateInstanceSupported() returs false, since I do not want to create any new instance (thats why my B b {get;} has only Get method), but I still want to allow users to edit properties of this object.     - A design pattern for managing the activation and deactivation of menus and buttons etc in an application Hi all, Does anyone know of a design pattern to deal with the issue of making UI controls active and inactive according to the context of what the user is doing? I've been thinking about the best way to handle this but the only way I can really think to do it would likely be very messy - trying to deal with it in event handlers. I can imagine that trying to disable and enable buttons and menu items and toolbars for a whole host of ui elements for a whole host of different application contexts could be very messy.     - Critical Bug Report in the JIT Engine of .NET Framework (v1.0/1.1/ This bug is not a common case and you might not have a chance to engage into it. But when you're going to make an plus or minus operation with signed integer, and the result is overflowed, there is a chance to crash into this bug. Please try this in C#: Int32 i = Int32.MaxValue; i += 10; if (i < 0) { i = -i; } Console.WriteLine(i.ToString()); We expect the output to be a positive number. However, we got a negative ones. In fact, the statement "if (i < 0)" failed and the statement "i = -i;" wasn't executed at all! So the i remain negative still. But when you use "Console.WriteLIne(i)" instead of "i.ToString()", the program will just work correctly. So what happen? I found that in the original code, the JIT will translate il "bge.s" to native code "jge". When you use "Console.Writeline(i)" instead of "i.ToString()", the same il will be translated into "jns". When you're adding two integer and get overflowed, and *immediately* followed by a "< 0" comparison (attn, not comparing to an non-const variable), you'll get a chance to see the bug. However, you will not get burned, unless you use the reference of variable "i" in the same function, eg: "i.ToString()" or "AnotherFunction(ref i)". One of my friend said that, not only when you use the reference of variable "i" will cause the failure, but also some other cases. I guess when this function uses ils like "ldloca.s" will cause the problem. There is another similar case: int i = int.Minimum; i -= 10; if (i > 0) ... There's no public KB in MS now. (At least, I can not find it) And here is my suggestion to work around the bug: 1. Becareful about the side effects of unchecked mathematics operations in C#. Especially, when a comparison between the result and a const zero is needed. If you're sure the operation should not result in overflowed, please write codes like this: checked { i += 10; } if (i<0) ... 2. Or, if you need this side effects, for example, you're writing a hashing algorithm, please use the following style instead: i += 10; int b = i; if (b < 0) ... I plan on testing out C# soon, and I'd like to first try it without the full retail version, so that means I need to download the SDK, etc. to compile the code. Anyway, I'm a little confused about what I do and don't have at this point. Recently I download Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (plus Service Pack 1 and a hotfix to the SP1) from Windows Update. Is this the same thing as the redistributable Framework? Is it the same as the SDK? If I have only what I downloaded from Windows Update, what more do I need to download in order to use C# without C# .NET Standard, or VS .NET? Thanks.     - Joining Datasets I have to join datasets, what is the quickest way? eg ds1 = [1,2,3,4,5] ds2=[4,5,8,9,20] jds = [4,5]; ie the data common to ds1 and ds2 is inserted into jds..     - Thread never wakes up again if Application does not have focus I have had this issue before and a check around the groups shows a few other people have had this problem too with no real resolution. I have a class that performs actions. These actions are performed multi-threaded via a ThreadStart in the Main Form. The method that performs this is in a while loop that never exits unless the form exits. It will sleep for 30 seconds after it has performed its action and then it will cycle through the loop again. This works fine and dandy but it seems that if the application does not have focus after multiple executions the thread goes to sleep and never wakes up. This randomly happens after about 30-60 minutes of running in the background. I am wondering if anybody else has ever experienced this problem and whether there were any fixes that they had come up with.     - performance windows services Hi We are using a VB.NET dll to execute a process (load and validate a file). Sending process from a Windows Application, its load rate is 16000 to 18000 regs/min. The same process is sended as a thread from a windows service (also developed in VB.NET) and load rate decreases a lot. File size is a factor that decreases performance. Rate falls to 50% - 20% of inicial medition. Windows services use normal threads (no pooled threads). When each thread finishes work, notifies the results to the service and this writes the trace. The dll process is Load Dataset from disc. Load File Format from SQL 2000 Database to VB 6.0 object. Read each line from file, break line and insert segments in dataset table as the format says. Validate data in dataset. If there are errors, the load fails generating notification and end process. Insert dataset rows in sql server temporary tables. Validate data completion, refussing registers with data not allowed using Stored Procedures. Insert temporary data into final tables (using same sql server). Notificate results process.     - Windows Installer: Registry path + Fixed path Hi all, I have writen plugin for another application and I need to install this component in a directory where the application is installed. I am using the basic Windows Installer. I read the value from a registry to get the proper directory. The problem is that I need it to input in that way in the given directory: APPLICATION_PATH \ ANOTHER_DIR So I created Custom Folder in an installer. I've set the Default Location property to the: [RegistryPath][Another_Dir] So this should work perfect. Unfortunately there is a property named Property, that can override the Default Location. In MSDN I found that if I left it empty, then it will never override it (that's the way I want it) , but when I leave it empty, the compiler states: Invalid property " for folder 'AnotherDir' How do I get rid of this error? When i run the app Nothing gets returned..?? Trying "A,B" definitely won't ... and doesn't work. SO somehow the parameter, is not being seen correctly...the single quotes and/or comma may be reponsible as... if I only use one item in the IN clauses List, it works fine.     - How to block on read at eof of a stream I am trying to block on a read of a stream once the stream has reached eof but I can't seem to get it to work. I would like to do this so that once I have processed all of the stream I block the current thread until more data is written to the stream from another thread or application. I have included an example program below that does not work the way I thought the documentation stated it. I am using a StreamReader that is calling ReadBlock for a single char. I assumed that this would block the current thread until one char was added to the stream. Unfortunately since I am at the eof the ReadBlock call returns immediately with a count of zero. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the thread to block while waiting for more data to be added to the stream? I have a slight work around now where by I use a FileSystemWatcher watching the file for size changes. When I detect changes I wake up the reading thread. I would like to not have to use this work around. (At my side, I am using Internet connection sharing from one PC - let's say it will have some external IP through which it connect my LAN to internet and will have 192.168.0.1 IP because we have enabled ICS.) - We double click on one ONLINE user say P2 with Local IP 192.168.0.5 (P2 will have same scenario as P1 - uses ICS) - we write a message and send to P2 (This message is first goes to yahoo server and then server will send it to P2 and then P1 and P2 will be connected directly as P2P. {I don't know how yahoo server creates P2P connection between P1 and P2}) - We get message from P2 if he write something. Now P1 and P2 don't use Yahoo server and connected directly as P2P connection. P1 has started the communication for IM so P1 will have 5101 listening port in case of Yahoo, and P2 will send message to 5101 port. if P1 and P2 both are behind router then also the communication is possible in case of yahoo messenger without making any change in router configuration and both P1 and P2 can chat. (I am sure about this with DLink router) So, in this way P1 > 192.168.0.10:5101 (from one LAN) is connected with P2 > 192.168.0.5: xxxx (from another LAN). And both LAN is connected with Internet through router or ICS server with an External IP uses for outer interaction with Internet. (I got all the information about Yahoo communication by capturing and analyzing the network packets.) I think this is the same case as IRC or MSN messenger also, just chat protocols are different. Yahoo uses YMSG protocol. Question: how this is possible with .Net? Or if it is not possible through .Net APIs then how can we achieve the functionality of P2P like yahoo messenger? To produce the xml I'm using an xmltextwriter, and in the receiving end I use an xmldocument and its Load method to load the output of the writer. I suspect I am missing a library ref but don't know what. The develoment machine has Office installed, the production test machine does not.     - COMException and Multiple Threads My VB.NET application spins up a secondary GUI thread. This thread hosts a Custom User Control (which owns the window handle) and some COM objects which interact with a Third Party Application. When a method call to one of the COM objects results in an error, the .NET Interop throws a System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException, as one would expect. However, while generating this exception, both the main and secondary GUI threads are halted. I can find no explanation for why the main thread should halt during this time. The entire purpose of spinning up a secondary GUI thread was to allow the primary GUI thread to stay active while COM related processing was occurring. Does anyone know what is happening under the covers of the COM Interop that would cause this? This pause (of about three seconds) only occurs when the first COMException is thrown. Logically, successive calls to ResourceManager.GetObject with the same resource name should return the same resource. Each resource set in sequence looks for an object in its internal hash table by loading and caching the table when queried. With the exception of ResourceManager.ReleaseAllResources (which isn't called internally), I see no code involved with clearing these caches. Is this a bug? Or is this behavior intended?
