    - Using cookies to save parameters According to my Frontpage 2002 Developers guide, I can use cookies to save a parameter to be used in ASP pages. The guide is just vague enough that I have not been able to figure out how to make it work. The way I have it now (see this page: http://www.diocesephoenix.org/school/seton_catholic_hs/Parents/Hours/Search.asp with ID 2000000 and student as the search), User can write "Description" "ServiceDate" and "Hours" using a form with the NameID hidden, to a Access database if they have a NameID and LName that match. Originally, I had the confirmation page with a link back to the Add.asp page, but the parameter for NameID was lost once form was submitted to the database. Once they have entered the information, I want the user to be able to add additional events, without returning to the search page to get the parameter for NameID. The cookie should expire at the end of the session. Where would I find the syntax, or is it simple enough that someone could just give me the syntax, what page does it go in, and where in the page should it go? I appreciate any help, or any direction.     - PNG files in a website I'm interested in opinions as to whether PNG files are adequately supported in today's primary browsers. (This isn't a programming question -- yet.) I (my wife, actually) is having a heck of a time getting good image quality for the banner graphic in either JPG or GIF format. She's using MS PhotoDraw 2000, and while it looks great as a MIX file a digital photo within the graphic degrades (gets fuzzy) when she saves to one of the other two formats. When, however, she saves to PNG it looks great. In researching the compatibility of PNG files and web browers I find that most of the information I find is at least a year old. So, while I realize this is not a graphics forum, it IS packed with webmasters, so I'm looking for opinions: Would you be comfortable using PNG files on your pages? If the concensus is "no", then I'm on to my programming question: How would I set up the pages to detect whether their browswer will handle PNGs well and then download the JPG or GIF if it doesn't? I have the banner in its own page, which I put into a layout cell at the top of each page on the site using Insert - Web Component - Included Content - Page. If it's possible to detect using JavaScript whether the browser will work with PNGs, I guess I could have a duplicate of each page with the JPG included instead of the PNG for those that don't, but that would be a pain. I'd rather swap the image, if that's possible. And, I realize that not everybody has JavaScript enabled on their brower, but if they don't they've got bigger problems on my site than fuzzy graphics.     - SW for visitors to upload pictures and descriptions. I am creating a site to sell property. I would like to be able to give estate agents a userid/password which would allow them to upload photos (of houses) and text (house descriptions) to my site. I would like to be able to edit the results or delete items. It needs to be dead simple or I won't be able to set it up and the estate agents won't be able to use it. What SW package should I use? Ideally it would be a free package, but I could spend a couple of hundred dollars. I could not spend thousand of dollars. I believe that www.french-property.com has an off-the-shelf package for much of this, but don't know what it is (I mention this as I suspect the clever people on this board could look at the site and tell me). Ideally, I would also like to store the results in a database (SQL???) so that I will have the future capability to search on the information.     - Discussion web posts fail to post I have created a sub-site using the discussion website wizard. it has up loaded to my site and can be accesessed on line. I have attempted a test post to the post comment form. Upon submission, a confirmation page appears stating that the post "has been submitted to the discusion group" and stating if the main page is refreshed the new article should appear on the list.     - bat file download I am trying to add 3 bat files to my website and be able to download them. I created a folder on the ftp site and placed the files in them.     - write results while skipping empty fields? I've been away from ASP and ADO/DAO for several years and my books are in storage in the next state ... I'm trying to remember some sort of recordset code so that I can not utilize the webbot database/form tool. What I want to do is display all fields from a record (about 25 fields, but on average, only 13 are used), but I want to skip null fields and write out a continuous result to a page that ONLY has field data and text identifiers for the fields WITH data, and not a bunch of wasted real estate. Some how I need to fetch the field data, determine if it's null, then do an If-then and place the field identifier text and field data on one line, or, skip and move to the next field, and so on. Here's why I want to do this: I'm a consultant working away from my own offices at a client site. I am creating installation files at my client's location that are too big (about 50 megabytes) to email. I need to make these files available to other programmers who are off site from the client.     - problems with website published to my new computer I have published my website from my server to my new laptop, and all the files download properly, and the navigation view shows all my proper hyperlinks. However, when I use the "Preview" view (in Front Page 2003), the within-a-page hyperlinks (bookmarks) work, the external hyperlinks (to e-mail and other URLs) work, but the hyperlinks between the pages don't work. After the site was published to my computer, I re-opened Front Page, clicked onto the site now in my C: drive, and clicked the dialogue button that said, "repair hyperlinks." Still, the "demo" hyperlinks won't work in FP preview mode. Although I can live with not being able to preview my hyperlink connections, I am concerned that when I work on my new computer's version of my website and then try to publish any changes to my real website, that I will inadvertently destroy the actual functioning hyperlinks on my online website. Is this a real danger? If so, how can I repair the problem? Or, can I just go on working with what I currently have on my computer and rest assured that my 25+ pages will remain properly linked together on my website??? One further note: When I published, I chose to publish to a set of files on my computer. This was one of the options presented. Could it be that I should have chosen, in terms of locations to publish, the option that mentioned "to a server that supports Front Page extensions" even though my computer is not technically a server?     - Database Results Using Page Variable Hello, can someone please tell me how I can declare a variable on my asp page and then have a database results region filter records using the value of that variable? Purpose: I have a series of articles (pages) that have mostly static content, but there is some additional data in a database (fields such as Author and Date Written). On each article page there is a Include Page which contains the database results region using formatting that is too laborious to reproduce manually on each article page (hence the include page). So I'd like to declare a variable (something like ArticleID = 123) and then specify the ArticleID variable in the Criteria of the database results wizard. Thanks for any assistance!     - Adding page to favourites folder All too often I get emails from potential customers directly from my website asking about different styles etc. I regularly have to refer them back the site to look at an alternative instead and I find that many of them can't remember the website address. Of course the average person would use the Favourites Folder to keep these things in but many don't.     - where can i find a frontpage 2003 dynamic template example I just installed Frontpage 2003 as i was told this was the program best and easiest to use for what i want for my website. Right now i have a number of pages with individual articles - and a linkbar to each. However I post new articles for this site all the time and i was told frontpage could help. The closest i have come to finding something that may help me is something called a dynamic template. My link bars are getting very lengthy and updating each time i create a new article is a pain. Using a dynamic template means i can simply create a new article and linkbar and upload and my new linkbar and the article and linkbar will then appear on every article page. Is this correct? Next question: How do i go about setting up a dynamic template? Please don't direct me to MSNs explaination, because i simply do not understand it.     - Unlinked Files Report -- Possible Thread Duplication My apologies if I'm duplicating another thread, but I'll be danged if I can find it. In another recent thread somebody was as advised to Recalculate Hyperlinks, then view the Unlinked Files report and delete them. Well, recalculated hyperlinks, but the unlinked files reports shows many files that do not have a zero in the "Links to" or "Links from" columns. This confuses me. Why would files that are linked show on the unlinked files report? I, too, would like to clean up the site but don't trust the report.     - What resolution do I create my page around? I have a very confusing problem which from what I hear takes a pro to figure out and it's something difficult to fix which is why you need a degree to build a webpage. First of all I'm trying to design all my pages to have a green background for the header with the company name/logo, then on the left side is the same green background with the hyperlinks. To the right will be each individual page with a white background. As you click on the hyperlink on the left, the middle will change accordingly. To do this, I'm using one big cell then using smaller ones inside of them. I learned this from you guys from a past messages. Now when I create the page in FrontPage, it looks one way. For purposes of discussion (and to make it easier to explain) the end of the hyperlink is under a certain part of the logo above. When I look at it through IE, the hyperlink is way past the logo. Why am I formatting it one way in FrontPage to have it look totally different (with the same resolution I used when creating it) through IE??? When I change resolutions, it moves it all around as well. My first question is: I thought the cells would take care of this and wouldn't allow things to "move around" on their own. So if I went to 800x600, it would look normal (if that's the resolution I created the page in), then 1200x1024 (or whatever the resolution is) it would look exactly the same, only everything within the cells I created would be all on the left while the remaining part of the screen is filled with blank area. My second question is: When I hold down ctrl and move the scroll on my mouse up/down, it changes the font size. Not thinking about this, I went to work today and looked up my webpage using 800x600 and found the hyperlink was beyond the border on the left cutting off part of the name. So now I have to worry about all the different resolutions and who has what font size??? Someone said I may be able to set something in FrontPage so everyone who looks at the webpage will all see the same thing regardless??? As in some check box that will allow it to be viewed as a default or something like that?? He wasn't sure himself,but thought it may have it. Any help would be appreciated.     - Database calculation I have a database that contains a table that lists vehicle type and mpg. I would like to create a form that has a drop down field from the database that lists the vehicle types. Also on the form other fields would be included like number of miles, number of days, price/gallon, etc. I would like to use the mpg found from the database when the user selects a certain vehicle and use this field to help calculate how much it would cost to rent a vehicle vs driving a personal vehicle. I have the formulas but don't know how to capture the mpg field from the database when the user selects the vehicle type. I know databases and I know FP, but I don't know the two together. I have created a form with a drop down list that selects from the database, but don't know how to get the mpg field.     - can't get sdk plugin to work I am trying to add an sdk plug in to an existing ui plug in which works. In GetDriverInfos I added a SDKDriverInfo from the help example. I traced thru the setup of the plug in for Driver Info and both ui and sdk plugin info's worked the same. In the driver factory only LoadUIAddInDriver was called, not LoadSdkAddInDriver. I've tried just using the sdk plug in by leaving the ui plug in out of GetDriverInfos. I have developed several websites using the Database Interface Wizard of
Frontpage 2003. I have mostly text types of fields, but sometimes numbers or
dates too. Things will be working fine one day and the next, there is no
longer the ability to update data by users who have the username/password.
This is very frustrating. Any advice on how to make this process more
stable, other than switching to php/mysql? Thanks, Tim
