This may sound like a stupid one, but is it possible to make a table
transparent, instead of choosing a background colour or picture? I can do
this with a text box but not a standard table..

Tables are always transparent unless you specify a background color or image with either an inline style or
via CSS.
So, simply create a table and don't specify a background color or image.

ps: the only stupid question is the one not asked.

I'm using FP 2003, and when I insert a table it defaults the background to
"automatic" unless I specify something different. I can't figure out what
I'm doing wrong. When I format an autoshape it gives me a transperency
option. Tables don't give me that.

You're not doing anything wrong, that's what the default is.

Don't ! use autoshapes or anything from the Draw toolbar.
