www.singerfoundation.org home page needs a margin to control the background
photo and a minimum left hand margin so the navagation text can be moved as
far left as possible. I read about margins but have no idea the number of
pixels to insert.

Margins aint gonna help ya with a bg image.
Your background image is way way too big (file size), it's 408K, most people
will never wait for it to download. Optimize your image prior to importing
it into FP.

Your text is illegible against that background anyway.

Think about putting your menu and content inside a table. Right now your
menu is inside a blockquote. You have some funky stuff there. You may want
to consider redoing that page.
