I'm in the process of developing a web site for my church and am trying to
make hosting decisions. I'm using FP2003 from a Windows XP HE. The alpha site
review is at http://judithbear.home.comcast.net I need help in
understanding enough to make decisions on 1. server operating system: linux
or windows; 2. languages supported: linux - PHP/Perl/Java or Windows -
ASP/PHP or Windows - ASP.NET. Please keep in mind that I am a self-taught
volunteer trying to do the best job I can. Not an expert in anything, and I
use my computer as I drive my car...turn it on and go. I don't know all the
technology and I'm feeling insecure and lost. Can any or all of you provide
me with information that will help me make the selections properly? I truly
appreciate your help.

Hi Judith,

Good question. The main thing to keep in mind is that if you run any
Microsoft technologies, you will most likely need a Microsoft server. ASP,
SharePoint, ASP.Net all fall into that category. Plain HTML, well, it
doesn't really make much difference.

Thank you, Kevin. I don't know if we'll be using SharePoint, we will,
however, be using some video and may use the add-on which allows FP to
display videos in
several formats. I know so little about this that I'm probably being way too
cautious in making my decisions. (If it were my own money I'd just pick one
and if it were wrong, change it later.) I, personally, do all the composing
through Front Page although I could see that some stuff might be generated
through third-party sources. When you say, plain HTML, exactly what does that
entail....would that be something done without a html generator?, or does it
mean something else?

TIA

No. It would mean static content, i.e., no server scripting and no data
driven pages, or FP extension work.

oh, OK. I understand. Thank you so much for explaining. We will not be using
only plain html. So a choice will need to be made between Linus or Windows
and within those choices
linux - PHP/Perl/Java or
Windows - ASP/PHP or Windows - ASP.NET

I suspect since I'll be using Microsoft stuff mostly, that I'll need the
ASP. If that is true then linux would be eliminated and I would choose
between Windows - ASP/PHP or Windows - ASP.NET

Is there a place where I can quickly learn the differences between the two
so I can make an informed decision? Or is it something you can explain so
even this novice could understand?

TIA

Well, if you're talking about a web application, you've made a good choice
to go with the Microsoft platform. As for what programming technology you
want to use, ASP or ASP.Net, I suppose it really depends on how much money
you want to spend. ASP.Net is much more powerful than ASP, but you'll
probably have to pay more for an ASP.Net developer. Depending upon the needs
of your application, and your budget, ASP may be good enough, but you'd have
to have a programmer do an analysis of your requirements to make that
decision.
