Could you rephrase the question? What is a "Drop-down button?" What is
"selection hyperlink?"

I did a Microsoft emailed "critical upgrade" on 12/17/04 and now I have
Microsoft XML Core Service on my desktop. What is it? Why is it there?

Now everything is running slow on my PC?

Do I need it? If not, how do I get rid of it?

I looked for link to get help and it sent me here. It seems impossible to
contact a live person at Microsoft.

Was the "Critical Upgrade" an attachment in the email?
If so, you have installed a virus. Microsoft NEVER send attachments in
emails.
Do a complete scan of your PC with your up-to-date anti-virus program.

If you downloaded the update from the Windows Update website, try posting in
microsoft.public.windowsupdate
