Was previously updating and publishing company website
from work. I now have loaded the web on my computer at
home to update and publish. I cannot get to publish to
our website. Not sure what I am doing wrong...mild amateur
on web making. Can someone help me understand what I may
be doing wrong? Thank you, mj

I have the web and all folders on my hard drive now.
Made some changes; click publish web; give web address;
message came back with the following error possibles: web
server may not have frontpage server extensions installed;
web server may be temporarily down; if you are connecting
through a proxy server (not sure what this means to me)
the proxy settings may be incorrect; an error may have
occurred in the web server.

Any info you can give would be very much appreciated.
Thank you, mj

Maybe some silly questions but paint me silly:

1. How did you get copies of the work computer files onto
your home PC? Did you "http" publish them from the server
to your PC. I would guess no but you should have.

2. Are you using the EXACT same steps to publish from
your home computer as you did from your work computer (it
could be as simple as typo errors)? Did you use "http" to
publish from both computers? If you used FTP at work and
http at home, your server may not have working Front Page
Extensions which are required to use http publishing.
Hence, the error message you are receiving.

3. Can you open the site "live" using Front Page on your
home computer? If not, an indication that you are not
doing the same thing at home as you do at work.

4. What is your firewall situation at work and at home?
Firewall settings can affect your ability to publish.

By the way, once you resolve this issue, do you plan to
continue to update your website from both computers? In
doing this you stand the risk of overwriting work done on
one computer with work done on the other.

To avoid this you should publish from the server based
web to your disk based web on the computer on which you
will be making changes prior to making any changes to
your disk based web. Once changes have been made, publish
from the disk based web to the server based web.

Those are good questions!

I copied the web onto an CD/RW and copied over to my hard
drive. I will always be working on web from my main
computer at home only.

How do you publish the web from the server to my pc at
home? That way sounds very logical..but not sure how?
Still an amateur working my way up.

I was trying the same way I publish at work but also got
the errors.

I actually turned the firewall off here at home for the
first time trying to publish.

Thank you for your answers/questions...very good ones. MJ

Aaaah.. copied onto a CD/RW is the key phrase.

Did you copy the "root" folder for the web ( The one with the blue globe on it ) from the server to
the CD?? globe on it.

If so you're half way there.

Now you need to go into the web on your home machine and remove the "read only" attributes from all
of the file in the web.

Files are automatically marked as read only when burned to a CD.

I have a little utility I found on the net that will remove them for you, that I can email if you
need / want it.

Regarding publishing from the server to your PC:

This is pretty simple if you think about it.

When you publish from your PC to the server site, you
first open the PC site with Front Page. You then publish
the PC site to the server by using the server site as the
destination. You have done that so many times from your
work computer that you probably forgot what it is you are
actually doing.

So armed with that knowledge, how would you publish from
the server to your PC?

That's right. When you publish from your the server to
the PC, you first open the server site in Front Page. You
then publish the server site to the PC site by using the
PC site as the Destination.
