    - Cuts Off Left Side of "W" in Menus - More Bugs in FP 2003? If I use Arial 8pt font for my vertical menu in my theme, the derived files for the menus have the left part of the "W" cutoff. It looks fine in the design view. It falls apart when previewing in Internet Explorer, and doesn't look any better when published. Then I looked in the "derived" directory, and sure enough FP cut off the left part of the "W". It doesn't seem to do this with Times Roman. Is this another bug in Frontpage? Anyone have a work around, short of using a paint program to fix the cr*ppy lettering FP creates? Also, how does one manually referesh the derived files, when FP doesn't do it, even though you change the menus? Seems like another bug in Frontpage. Michael Tag: Free Advertsing Tag: 55209

    - Update for Upload Files Snafu What I meant in the original post was: The form/web publish fine with or without the file upload element. The error window shows up when I am accessing the website, filling out the form and try to submit the form as a reader might. The error happens with or without any actual photos having been uploaded...the form field itself is enough to cause the error. Of course, nothing gets submitted either.     - Upload Files Snafu When I include an "upload file" type form field and try to publish the web I get a pop-up window that asks for user name and password (title of this window is the website location). If I remove the file upload element the web publishs fine. Site is a test site provided by my server op. Any ideas? (I want to be able to have reader upload photos in this field).     - Keeps putting in target="main" I'm really hoping someone can help me with this. I'm at wit's end! I'm running FP2003 on Win-XP-Pro, and my site does *not* use frames as such. (A few pages use the Include iFrame that FP offers, but not on many pages that this problem occurs in.) On some hyperlinks (<a href=...>), as well as some anchor code (<a name=...>), FP insists on inserting target="main." I have never put this in on my own, nor have I ever used a target or even an anchor name called "main," so I have no idea where this is coming from. Besides being annoying, the bigger problem is that when you click on a link that has this, it creates a new window, which I don't want it to do. These are (so far) links to other pages within my site, not external links. If I delete this from the code directly, it keeps coming back. ??!! If I substitute something like target="_self" or "_top" it seems to stay put. But I don't relish going through some 180 web pages to change this, even using find-and-replace (which I've found to be buggy anyway). And I don't understand why it would put this into anchor code anyway, except maybe that it uses the same <a> code but for a different purpose. I have checked to see if a target default has been set in Page Properties or in the header code of the page -- nope. I even tried *setting* the default target frame in Properties to "_top" and it STILL came back to "main." This is like a bad horror movie! It comes back when I save it, unload the page, and then reload the page in FP. And of course, when I test it in a browser that's when I see that it produces a new window. And even if I was to go through all those pages and change the target specification, I'm not sure if I should be using "_self" or "_top" to link using the same window, since they seem to be more or less the same in a non-framed page. So two questions: 1. Why is FP doing this and how can I get it to stop?? 2. What's the difference between "_self" and "_top" and which should I be using if I have to replace the code?     - Database results Wizard with Search Field I am using FP2003 pages to update a SQL2000 DB. I used the DB Results Wizard to create a page displaying records adhering to certain criteria - these criteria is used as a search field - thus only displaying adhering records from the DB. This works fine with similar pages I have already setup but now I can not create any .asp result pages working with a search field. I get the following error message in the results area: "Database Results Wizard Error The operation failed. If this continues, please contact your server administrator." If I remove the search field all the records from the table I am accessing on the DB is displayed.     - FrontPage Is Okay, But... FrontPage is fine, for anyone who is just satisfied with the Web Development limitations. Maybe this is reason why the Microsoft does not use their own program, Frontpage, to create its own websites. Although this program is better than the NetObject's Fusion, I am exploring other applications such as Flash and Adobe GoLive and AfterEffects. Of course, it is going to take longer to self-learn these programs than MS Frontpage, but I am ready to be enlightened.     - Make Front Page XHTML Compatible i.e. <br /> tags allowed & DTD's FrontPage sorely needs better XHTML compatibility. I am an XHTML compliant coder and noticed that FP will not allow me to have tags like <br> and <img> include a closing slash such as <br /> or <img src="file.gif" /> at least this is something I cannot find.     - Adding collapsable tree menu? I am reposting this message because the first post (about a week ago) was done on a borrowed computer whose date was way off. Not sure if anyone has seen it with a posting date of Jan-2000. Want to add a collapsable vertical tree menu to our html site. Need to be able to use our customized buttons instead of text for the parent nodes of the tree structure. Must also support frames navigation. Have found dozens of options from a Google search but nothing quite right. If I can use custome graphics for the parent nodes the program only seems to work with Dreamweaver.     - Update function keeps breaking in Frontpage2003 Database ASP Site I have developed several websites using the Database Interface Wizard of Frontpage 2003. I have mostly text types of fields, but sometimes numbers or dates too.     - Using cookies to save parameters According to my Frontpage 2002 Developers guide, I can use cookies to save a parameter to be used in ASP pages. The guide is just vague enough that I have not been able to figure out how to make it work. The way I have it now (see this page: http://www.diocesephoenix.org/school/seton_catholic_hs/Parents/Hours/Search.asp with ID 2000000 and student as the search), User can write "Description" "ServiceDate" and "Hours" using a form with the NameID hidden, to a Access database if they have a NameID and LName that match. Originally, I had the confirmation page with a link back to the Add.asp page, but the parameter for NameID was lost once form was submitted to the database. Once they have entered the information, I want the user to be able to add additional events, without returning to the search page to get the parameter for NameID. The cookie should expire at the end of the session. Where would I find the syntax, or is it simple enough that someone could just give me the syntax, what page does it go in, and where in the page should it go? I appreciate any help, or any direction.     - PNG files in a website I'm interested in opinions as to whether PNG files are adequately supported in today's primary browsers. (This isn't a programming question -- yet.) I (my wife, actually) is having a heck of a time getting good image quality for the banner graphic in either JPG or GIF format. She's using MS PhotoDraw 2000, and while it looks great as a MIX file a digital photo within the graphic degrades (gets fuzzy) when she saves to one of the other two formats. When, however, she saves to PNG it looks great. In researching the compatibility of PNG files and web browers I find that most of the information I find is at least a year old. So, while I realize this is not a graphics forum, it IS packed with webmasters, so I'm looking for opinions: Would you be comfortable using PNG files on your pages? If the concensus is "no", then I'm on to my programming question: How would I set up the pages to detect whether their browswer will handle PNGs well and then download the JPG or GIF if it doesn't? I have the banner in its own page, which I put into a layout cell at the top of each page on the site using Insert - Web Component - Included Content - Page. If it's possible to detect using JavaScript whether the browser will work with PNGs, I guess I could have a duplicate of each page with the JPG included instead of the PNG for those that don't, but that would be a pain. I'd rather swap the image, if that's possible. And, I realize that not everybody has JavaScript enabled on their brower, but if they don't they've got bigger problems on my site than fuzzy graphics.     - SW for visitors to upload pictures and descriptions. I am creating a site to sell property. I would like to be able to give estate agents a userid/password which would allow them to upload photos (of houses) and text (house descriptions) to my site. I would like to be able to edit the results or delete items. It needs to be dead simple or I won't be able to set it up and the estate agents won't be able to use it. What SW package should I use?     - bat file download I am trying to add 3 bat files to my website and be able to download them. I created a folder on the ftp site and placed the files in them. I then created a hyperlink to the files. When I click on anyone of them I get The page cannot be displayed instead of a file download dialog box.     - write results while skipping empty fields? I've been away from ASP and ADO/DAO for several years and my books are in storage in the next state ... I'm trying to remember some sort of recordset code so that I can not utilize the webbot database/form tool. What I want to do is display all fields from a record (about 25 fields, but on average, only 13 are used), but I want to skip null fields and write out a continuous result to a page that ONLY has field data and text identifiers for the fields WITH data, and not a bunch of wasted real estate. Some how I need to fetch the field data, determine if it's null, then do an If-then and place the field identifier text and field data on one line, or, skip and move to the next field, and so on.     - problems with website published to my new computer I have published my website from my server to my new laptop, and all the files download properly, and the navigation view shows all my proper hyperlinks. However, when I use the "Preview" view (in Front Page 2003), the within-a-page hyperlinks (bookmarks) work, the external hyperlinks (to e-mail and other URLs) work, but the hyperlinks between the pages don't work. After the site was published to my computer, I re-opened Front Page, clicked onto the site now in my C: drive, and clicked the dialogue button that said, "repair hyperlinks." Still, the "demo" hyperlinks won't work in FP preview mode. Although I can live with not being able to preview my hyperlink connections, I am concerned that when I work on my new computer's version of my website and then try to publish any changes to my real website, that I will inadvertently destroy the actual functioning hyperlinks on my online website. Is this a real danger? If so, how can I repair the problem? Or, can I just go on working with what I currently have on my computer and rest assured that my 25+ pages will remain properly linked together on my website??? One further note: When I published, I chose to publish to a set of files on my computer. This was one of the options presented. Could it be that I should have chosen, in terms of locations to publish, the option that mentioned "to a server that supports Front Page extensions" even though my computer is not technically a server?     - Database Results Using Page Variable Hello, can someone please tell me how I can declare a variable on my asp page and then have a database results region filter records using the value of that variable? Purpose: I have a series of articles (pages) that have mostly static content, but there is some additional data in a database (fields such as Author and Date Written). On each article page there is a Include Page which contains the database results region using formatting that is too laborious to reproduce manually on each article page (hence the include page).
