I am semi familiar with html but not sure how to do this. I would like to
setup a site for my gaming friends that has a registered users section that
includes a forum that you have to be a member of the site to use. I have been
trying to set this up for a few hours now and only getting a headache lol.
Any help at all would be greatly apreciated. Thank you.

Since you haven't told us the O/S of the host server, I'll assume
Windows....

have you considered a third party forum/portal solution?...like DotNet Nuke
or a PHP one perhaps (depends on what kind of server you are on)

info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software

some are free and your host may offer one free as well.

you'd install it in a sub web of your website.
