    - Very New Need Help I am trying to set up a mail server at work. I thought I knew alot about computers until I took on this project. I build all of our computers and do some limited networking. Our company has a web adress (domain) but we do not serve it from here. We want to set up in house e-mail using MS exchange server 2003 but I am not sure where to begin. Our domain is www.parkmazdaakron.com and we would like to have e-mail adresses like: jsmith@parkmazdaakron.com. If anyone can help me with this, I would really apreciate it.     - Webmail - exchange 5.5 & 2003 environment I have an Exchange 2003 Server and an Exchange 5.5 Server on my domain. We are migrating all users "eventually" to the 2003 Server. For the time being, the users housed on the 5.5 server have been able to use webmail, NOW that I have made the 2003 Exchange server the MX record, and turned on Https for webmail, only users that are housed on that Exchange 2003 server can use webmail, and those housed on the 5.5 server cant get to their mail... Is there anything I can do to make it so ALL users on both servers can access webmail via the same 2003 Exchange servers webmail application? Any advice or links would be much appreciated...     - 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for I am having a problem with a Exchange 2003 server that is also a POP3 server. I have configured Outlook express to use the POP3 server to retrieve emails. When I am using a OE client local to the Exchange server everything seems to work fine and I can send and receive email to local and remote email addresses. When I use a OE client that is not local to the Exchange server I can receive email, but not send. The error I receive is: The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'someone@othercompany.net'. Subject 'test', Account: 'Frank', Server: 'mail.localcompany.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for someone@othercompany.net', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79 On the OE client I have checked "My server requires authentication", which seems to clear up this issue for many people, but I am still receiving the error. On the Exchange server under the "Default SMTP Virtual Server" I have checked the "Allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of the list above" The Authentication is set for 'Anonymous Access', 'Basic authentication' and 'Integrated Windows Authentication" If I set up an open relay I am able to send email from a remote location...So I think there is something I'm missing with the client authentication.     - can't start setup in disaster recovery mode We just restored a windows backup set containing the entire C:\ partition and the System State Data. The restore was 100% successfull, however when we reboot the server to try and re-install exchange using disasterrecovery mode switch it tells us our metabase is corrupted. Upon checking out IIS we can see that it is not running at all.....should we re-install IIS and then try the setup using the /disasterrecovery switch or do we need that old metabase data from when the server was working?     - beginner's question I am helping out with a small non-profit that has 15 desktops at a single site (Ethernet LAN, file server) and depends heavily on e-mail which is currently hosted outside. We are moving to a domain environment on Windows Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange server. We do not intend to host our web site, but we are considering hosting our e-mail.     - Changing Recipent Update Service I am in the process of trying to decommission an exchange server, and I want to make sure the old one has all roles moved off of it. So I am trying to change the Recipient Update Service from the old server to the new one.. and I keep getting this following error. I have verified most settings including the DNS Servers, Run DCDiag, against the cooresponding DC, and run Netdiag all with no more idea of why this is happening.. Anyone else seen this? I have read a couple of articles that will suggest running domain prep again. But I am not sure I want to do that right now.. Also a little more info.. both DCs at were in place at the time the "old server" was brought on line have been removed.. so Domain Prep may be only option.     - Drive Optimization Hi, We've got a Compaq ProLiant DL380 G2, which is our Exchange 2000 server. It has two physical RAID 5 drive array's, one being logical drives c: and d: and the second physical drive being e:. The system has 1 GB of RAM. This is a company of ~80 users. C: is the system drive, d: is the Exchange Server drive and e: contains the tran logs. The Microsoft Performance Troubleshooting Analyzer indicates a bottleneck on d:, I'm sure because it contains the page file. I know that having the page file on a on its own physical drive would be good, but that isn't going to happen. Also, the c: drive doesn't really have enough space for the swap file. There are definitely performance issues with this machine. As a side note, we are upgrading to Exchange 2003 and Server 2003 this weekend, so all of this may be a moot point, but I'd still like to know if there is a "fix" for this problem. I am running a W2K Domain "mycompany.com" with DC's in each office location. The offices ,for now, are connected via frame-relay and all Internet traffic flows through the corporate office to hop on a Dedicated T-1 for Internet access at our corporate office.     - OOF or rules does not send more than one reply to Inetrnet user - I need help..... This was possible in exchange 5.5, Now we have upgarded to 2003 and having problems with Auto response feature. Autoresponse only works for first internet mail users, but will not send anymore email to same user. We need this feature. To reply on every email that is recieved.     - OWA "404 Not Found" Error Hi I've just setup OWA on an Exchange 2003 FE server. The server sits behind an ISA server. When I type the URL of the OWA site I get the following error: Page cannot be displayed 404 Not Found - The requested item could not be located. (12028) Internet Security and Acceleration Server I originally thought the issue may be with the ISA server....but when I try to access my mailbox internally through the FE server (http://servername/exchange) the mailbox looks like its opening (the blue line appears which splits the folders menu and the inbox) but I get the same error message in both windows: Page cannot be displayed 404 Not Found - The requested item could not be located.     - Exchange 2003 sp2 upgrade IMF issues I have a exchange server2003 that I am trying to apply the sp2 upgrade. I had to jump through hoops to copy the correct profile that had the install info for the Intelligent Message Filter. I was able to remove it using the add/remove but when I try to apply sp2 it says that the IMF is still installed. Addionally, I am running Symantec Antivrius for Exchange and SMTP and also have the Premium Spam filter (Brightmail) installed. Any ideas??     - Recover public calendar Since I'm new to Exchange 2003, I misunderstood the two folders showing a public calendar. I decided to delete one. Unfortunately, when I deleted one, the other disappeared also. We are using Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2000.     - Multiple domains setup question Currently we have a single domain AD. We are currently installing Exchange with a font end\and cluster backup configuration. At this our users are also configured with an SMTP address for a currently being used external POP3 . We have our recipient policy forwarding the SMTP maill to that server. What would like to do is to migrate our users to use the exchange server for both exchange mail and internet mail. But the 2 domains are using separate name spaces. The department who manages the POP3 have told us that they can place an attribute on the POP mailboxes to automatically forward all POP mail to our exchange server as we migrate the users off the POP3. What would we need to setup on the Exchange side to accept this mail and pass it along to the appropriate users? What would we have to setup on the Exchange side to properly handle the SMTP mail once the users have been fully migrated from the POP3 to their full exchange mailbox?     - New exchange server I am going to replace out old exchange server. Is there a way to replicate the mail boxes and public folders while I migrate every one to the new server? Also I created a test mail box on the old server. when I migrated the mailbox I could no longer logon to OWA with that account and when I tried to go to OWA on the new server it just redirected me to the old server.     - So Tricky !! OWA - Change Password Function ??? Anybody encounter such tricy problem ? If using FireFox v1.07 to do the change password function, it successfully change the password, but it seems the firefox will and only keep 2 passwords, that is we can use the old one and the new one to logon OWA after change password, but IE only allow the new password to logon OWA. Another tricy problem is if using IE 6.0 w/ SP2 to do the change password function, it always got "error number : 5", we CAN'T use IE to change password. Why ? Why ? Why ?     - Recommended Exchange paritioning Hi All, We will be having our own Exchange server 2003 soon. We have ordered new hardware for it and has 6 x 146GB hard drive. 2 of the hard drive will be RAID 1 for the OS and the other 4 hard disk will be running RAID 5. May I know what is the recommended to partition the drives? I will have about 35 users so I assume there should be no more than 40 mailboxes.     - Internet Mail Wizard... remove unwanted domain Greetings -- Went and setup a new Exchange 2003 server. When I did the install and initial configuration I configured the server to use a certain domain -- let's call it mail2.domain.com for the Send and Recieve internet email... Well I actually needed it to be mail.domain.com It was easy enough to make it utilitze that domain however it seems that mail2 is still in there somehow and was wonder what I can do to remove it without having to compeltely re-install the Exchange Server.     - RPC over HTTP w/ local namespace I have sbs 2003 premium and NOT using ISA I am trying to connect a user's outlook through RPC over HTTP, but the configuration for proxy, and exchange name has the .local namespace which isn't routable through internet.     - Exchange 2003 SP2 install errors advice Hi We have a SBS2003 server SP1 and Exchange Server which tonight i installed SP2 onto, all OK untill received message "setup failed while installing sub-component Exchange ActiveSync with error code 0x0070643" cancel or retry. Retry failed so i cancelled, i expected it to roll back but it skipped the error and continued to install. It then encounted about 12-18 files that were of a newer version so i clicked do not over write. The server is not giving any problems as yet but could some one shead any light on this error or the fact that some files were newer than the SP2 installer. Any advice would be great. We have about a 756K connection to that office. They are part of our domain. Our main exchange server is Windows 2k3 running Exchange 2k3. We will put Exchange 2k3 on a Windows 2k3 server in that office. The server is already built (no exchange) and is part of the ADS.     - Two Exchange servers with OWA I found a number of references to this but no solutions, other than using a FE, but that isn't an option here.... We are migrating from 2000 to 2003, but would like to run both servers for a while. Almost everything is working great, surprisingly well. SERVER1 = 2000 = mail.foo.com = server1.internalfoo.local SERVER2 = 2003 = mail2.foo.com = server2.internalfoo.local Users can get to the OWA on SERVER1 from http://mail.foo.com/exchange, http://server1/exchange, and http://server1.internalfoo.local/exchange. And OWA on SERVER2 from http://mail2.foo.com/exchange, http://server2/exchange, and http://server2.internalfoo.local/exchange. It works great as long as the users know which server is holding their mailbox. If a mailbox is on SERVER2 and they log into SERVER1 it redirects them to http://server2.internalfoo.local/exchange. Which, as you would expect, works fine in the office, but not from outside of the LAN. Is there any way to tell it to redirect to http://mail2.foo.com/exchange instead?     - Need to move Exchange 5.5 on 2000 DC to new server on different domain I have an existing Exchange 5.5 server running under Windows 2000 which is acting as DC for domain 1. I want to move this server to a stand alone Windows 2000 server on domain 2 and turn off the existing DC on domain 1 (starting new network and domain from scratch). There is no trust relationship between the 2 domains. What I would like to do it: 1. Install and name the new server with the same name as the old one 2. Setup and upgrade exchange using /r and copy the existing exchange databases over 3. Do the required maintenance on the new server (ISINTEG, etc) If that worked then all users would join the new domain which is already setup and running. What are the problems with this? I have no desire to keep domain 1 and we will be using domain 2 from now on. All other existing stand alone servers should easily join the new domain and there is only the 1 DC left running on domain 1. What about security...will the users with the same username be able to join the new server under domain 2? What other issues are possible here? Is it even possible?     - Message forwarding problems Hi I have a local domain and two external domains. External mail addresses have departement name and employees have a local account. I have created virtual users with department name, associated external mail address, and activated mailboxes permissions to local users. The problem is: if a local user tries to forward mail from deparment mailbox to another local user or to reply to it, it gets a permission error saying He does not have enough permissions to forward message to local recipient. If he writes a new message to local or external recipients, no problem. How happens this?     - Some general questions. Is this right for us? Hi all This post has ended up much longer than I intended and I know some of it is off topic. Feel free to ignore the non-Exchange stuff. I'd appreciate any comments or thoughts about this situation. I look after the I.T. stuff at a small non-profit organization on a volunteer basis. They have a Windows network with about seven users on a mixture of Windows 98, 2000 and XP machines. The server is currently a standard desktop type machine running Windows NT Server 4 (domain controller) and Exchange 5.5. Its been like that for a few years. There is a mixture of MS Outlook versions on the workstations. Exchange is used for internal mail, shared calendars and message storage of internet mail. They have a DSL internet connection. We get about 60 kb/sec when downloading to give an idea of speed. Although its a business account, I don't think its technically any different to the residential connection I have at home with the same ISP. It is ADSL so the upload is much slower. Internet mail is done with POP. ie, the mail is hosted at an ISP. Each user has their own pop mailbox. They pickup pop mail with Outlook and it goes into their Inbox on Exchange. It all works reasonably well. Things maybe all about to change. Someone has generously donated a 'surplus to requirements' server from his company. Its an Acer ... sorry I don't remember the model. It has a raid 5 disk array and comes with Windows 2003 Server and Exchange 2003. The donor is also giving us some consulting time from the I.T. services company that does his company's I.T. work. The consultant is going to migrate the data from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. He says he is going to setup Active Directory. Is that overkill for us? I don't know much about it. They're just a small office accessing a few file shares on a server and sharing a couple of printers. Are there any questions we should ask about the migration before he does it? He also is going to install a Cisco pix 501 firewall. I'm not familier with it although it sounds good :) but again, I wonder if its overkill. We use 192.168... NAT internally. The ActionTec DSL router is set to block everything incoming and "Shields Up" at grc.com confirms it. The only exception is one high port that I have forwarded to one machine to use the Windows XP remote access. I've changed the registry setting on that machine so that remote access listens on that port. Am I being naive to think that an extra firewall really isn't needed? I haven't heard of any security scares with the XP Remote access. I believe its encrypted. If there is a concern there then I could setup an SSH tunnel which I am quite familier with. The XP Remote access is only used by one user but its simple and works very well. He can access shared drives, printers and even sound. It really is just like being there. The consultant wants to do away with that and setup some sort of VPN through the Cisco box. It might be good but I'm just concerned about making a simple working setup much more complicated than it needs to be, especially since its not really clear how much time his company is donating for support etc. He also wants to turn the new Exchange server into the primary mail server for the domain so that it receives internet mail directly via smtp down the dsl line. I understand mail protocols etc and I know that this is the "textbook correct" way of doing it. Pushing is always more efficient than polling. My concern is that it puts lots of eggs in several rather fragile baskets. The DSL line goes down relatively frequently, the break may be brief but the router often doesn't reconnect until someone does a power cycle. Its really no big deal, whoever comes in first just flips the power switch on and off and its away again. I guess we could try working with the ISP to improve that but people just have better things to do. Power cuts happen reasonably often, especially in winter with lots of snow around. We're in a semi rural area. If a break happens Friday night then the connection is maybe out out until Monday morning. Currently, they can always access mail from home via POP or webmail at the ISP no matter what happens at the office. Obviously, with the new setup, that just isn't so. If something stops or breaks at the office, mail is inaccessible. He plans to have a secondary MX at the ISP. That's all well and good but unless the sender's server immediately gives up with a permanent error then I don't really see that the existence of a secondary MX adds much value. Mail either waits at the sender's server or the secondary MX. They also have a one person office in another town who have an email address on the same domain. Currently they are just another POP mailbox at the ISP. Now they are going to have to hit the Exchange server back at the main office with POP, hoping that the DSL line etc is working. I guess I'm asking two things here. Firstly, any comments, suggestions or whatever? Secondly, how bad a practice is it, really, to run pop like we're doing for about seven users? I know its sort of inefficent and obviously there is a limit to how many users could do that but its unusual for more than four to be active at once and with growth, they'll probably never have more than ten users. As I see it, the simple pop method has important advantages in terms of reliability. The consultant, "understands my concerns" but says "the current setup is a bit more complicated than is probably necessary". Depends what you mean by OWA failing, its quite rare for just OWA (i.e. HTTP
access) to fail. If the mailbox server fails then people cannot access their
mailboxes on that server and thus will not be able to access mailboxes via
any other server. You are better off have a full disaster recovery plan for
a server failure.
