We have Exchange 5.5 installed on a W2K box (NT domain), and it is the
second mail server for the company, on a single domain. What we wish to
do is have email forwarded to Exchange by the other server for a subset
of users on the primary mail server (non-Exchange). We have tried
various address spaces and routing options with no sucess - the best
we've done is getting the mail delivered to Exchange mailboxes, and the
users can read email, but not send email to the Internet. We have been
assuming that the way to do this is by setting up a subdomain for the
Exchange server to handle, but obviously have not done this correctly.

Has anyone done such a configuration, or know what steps to go through
for doing so?

TIA,
Randy

The address space on the IMS should be "*.*", "*" or " " (a space).

The IMS, if configured to use DNS to deliver mail, should have a
connection to the Internet. If it's configured to send all mail to a
smarthost then the smarthost must be configured to permist Exchange to
relay mail.

Knowing WHY the mail returned as undeliverable would help.

It is.

Not familiar with the term "smarthost". Exchange is configured to send
SMTP to the other server, a UNIX server configured to allow relay from
IP's within the same domain.

The return email says:

"The recipient name is not recognized."

I don't remember what the logs on the server said - I'm not at work now.

What we've done in the past is create an external address, or "Custom
Recipient" with the address of the box that you want to forward too, then
open the box you want to forward from and choose delivery options. There
will be a place at the bottom of this tab that will allow you to forward.
(Note, neither recipient should not be hidden until you have completed the
forward.) Once done we hide either the main box or the external recipient
box.

Best Regards,
Chris

Yes, and it was "MTA". I checked the address space, and I had the mail
domain as the address space. I changed to *.* and things now work correctly.

Thanks a lot for your assistance!!
