    - Event ID 3008: DNS problems with Exchange 2003 I got the following error today. After having spent some hours reading and trying to find more info on the internet, I'm rather clueless of what to do. We're running Exchange 2003 on a WIndows 2003 std server. The server is a dc, and runs dns. TOday I stopped the mail server in order to do some maintenance. Had some hickups there, but got the server online again. In the error log, there are some error messages concerning not finding dns. Seems like it has stopped receiving after getting back online. I can send mail out, but can't receive mail. This is both internal and external. This is what the postmaster@mydomain.no returns to my external email after I've tried to send something to my adress: This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. Delivery to the following recipients failed. kaisa@legemiddelsiden.no (think it's more detailed for other recipients.) This is what is says in the application log: A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.0.0 was generated for recipient rfc822;name@mydomain.no (Message-ID <3F26CD4BFAE0FC459DDA64D3F2CAAE5B1E0409@online.no>). Cause: This indicates a permanent failure. Possible causes : 1)No route is defined for a given address space. For example, an SMTP connector is configured, but this recipient address does not match the address spaces for which it routes mail. 2)Domain Name Server (DNS) returned an authoritative host not found for the domain. 3)The routing group does not have a connector defined û mail from one server in the routing group has no way to get to another routing group. Solution: Verify that this error is not caused by a DNS lookup problem, and then check the address spaces configured on your STMP connectors. If you are delivering Internet mail through an SMTP connector, consider adding an address space of type SMTP with value ô*ö (an asterisk) to one of the SMTP connectors to make routing possible. Verify all routing groups are connected to each other through a routing group connector or another connector.     - OWA: reply message is blank when using SSL We are using Outlook Web Access (OWA) and for security we are using SSL 128 bit. So users login into the server as https://OurExchangeServer/Exchange. The problem we are facing is when users are replying to an email the 'original message' does not come in message body. The body is only showing the original message headers.     - Error during setup I'm trying to setup exchage anf all goes well with thte installation. When it tries to finialise the settings it tries to read a file called server.ins on the cd. It throws out the error message " cannot read from file d:\server\setup\i386\server.ins at or around line 205, path specified not found" I can look at this file fine and read from it, but setup can't, anyone ever seen this ?     - Missing Path I got a problem whit Exchange server 2003. After I have installed the small business server 2003 I renamed the server name after that the exchange server 2003 will not start. I get all the way through the install of MS Search and MS Exchange and get partially through the "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services" portion of the install... but get stuck when the install fails to find a file called closedexpectedcontentclasses_s.xml. I did a search on the Cd I am installing from and I did find closedexpectedcontentclass.xml But the file the installation is asking for is "closedexpectedcontentclasses_s.xml" not "closedexpectedcontentclass.xml" Other than a possible spelling issue, anyone know if there is a difference in files ...     - IDQ, IDA, HTX files cannot be placed on a network share? Hi all, I am new to index/iis server 5.0. Currently a virtual web site is hosting on iis 5.0 server but all of its files are on a different server, on a file server. The index service is also installed on the IIS server. A catalog is configured on the IIS server, but all IDQ, IDA, and HTX files are on the root of the web site which are the file server. When I can access the default page just fine, but when I do a search I get an error message "IDQ, IDA, HTX files cannot be placed on a network share" Are there any workaround that alow me to fix this problem without moving the whole web files to the IIS server.     - Groupshield and GFI Running Exch 2000 with Network Associates Groupshield for Exchange 5.2 and GFI Mail Essentials 9.0 on Win 2000 server. Anyone done an upgrade to Win 2003 and Exchange 2003 with these installed? I see on NAI's site that Groupshield is not supported on Win 2003 running Exch 2000, but it says nothing about after upgrading. It is supported on Exch 2003 on Win 2003. GFI does support Exch 2003 on Win 2003 Trying to see if I can just upgrade Win2000 to 2003, then upgrade Exch 2000 to 2003 with Groupshield and GFI installed. Will this create problems or should I bring up a new Win 2003 server, install exch 2003, then reinstall GFI and Groupshield, then move the mailboxes. I'd really hate to do this....     - exchange 2003 will not send mail to mail to hotmail.com i've upgraded my windows2000/exchange2000/domain controller single server to windows2003/exch2003. After upgrade I am unable to send mail to hotmail.com mailboxes. I can mail other domains and receive from all incl. hotmail. No errors are logged upon sending a test mail. Using message tracking center, it appears my mail is delivered to the hotmail.com mailserver. At that moment dcom logs a 10009 error in the computers systemlog stating; DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer mc8-f8.hotmail.com using any of the configured protocols.     - permission problems Hi all, have problems after migrating subdomain to ex2000. Parent domain: W2k mixed mode, ex 5.5 (exchange=1org, 1 site) Subdomain: W2k native mode, ex 2000. When I try to open mailboxes with ex-admin account from parent domain in subdomain I get the message that I´ve no permission. Admin account from subdomain is able to access all mailboxes. Another problem is that I get id´s 1022 and 9562 in eventlog everytime a user from ex 5.5 sends email to receipients in ex 2000. ADC in parentdomain seems to work fine.     - Removing ADC and E2k3 from first E2k3 server!!! I am having hardware problem after finishing the E2k3 server installation. My Dell PE4400 rebooting itself every 3 or 4 hours due to bug on WS2003, error 0xd1 - even apply the hotfix 823728. My only choice is install the E2k3 on the other server. Here is my environment setup.. one E5.5 running on Windows 2000 server, one trouble E2k3 server on WS2003 with ADC. What is the recommendation to attack this problem Uninstall E2k3 and uninstall ADC or install another E2k3 and use the existing ADC(this phase is kind of scary since ADC will go down at any momment and when move mailbox to the new E2k3 server.     - Enterprise over Trial Enterprise - activation?? I installed the 120 day trial of Ent Exc 2003 in December and yesterday used my media kit from my Enterprise Exchange Software Assurance purchase to reinstall. I did this assuming this would remove the time limitation. I expected to be asked for license number or told to activate, but it worked without any questions from me. So, is that it? Is software assurance somehow different (since MS has the licensing info on their web site already) in that it does not require activation? Did I miss something?     - automatic '?' character generated in all sent emails?! I believe I have the weirdest problem in SBS2003/Exchange. All emails sent by administrator (and no other user!), whether through OWA or Outlook2003 have a '?' character inserted automatically in the body. The '?' only shows up after the email is sent and not when creating a new message. I am at a loss to figure out why this might be happening.     - Exchange 2003 setup problem I am having a frustrating problem at the start of installation, after accepting the license agreement it asks for the Service Account information on the existing 5.5 servers. The User name and Domain boxes are greyed out, only the passwordbox is editable, and I can't get past this screen. I type in the password for the service account and it tells me "The account must be valid before contuing". I am trying to install on Windows 2003 server and join an existing 5.5 organization on NT 4 sp6. I have followed the entire checklist with no problems. All logs check out and ADC is replicating.     - Log and Database Layout I have a new Exchange 2003 server that I am currently ready to put into production. The question I still have is: how can I configure the log files and the database to gain the best performance. The server has 1 RAID 1 (mirror) volume that the operating system and the Exchange binaries are located on. I also have 1 RAID 5 (strip w/parity) volume that is empty. Will I gain performance from moving the log files to the empty RAID 5 volume or the database files?? Or will not gain anything because the RAID 1 volume contains the operating system?     - Exchange 5.5 to 2k3 connectivity Ok, here's the set up. I have an NT 4 domain. My ex svr is running on a w2k box and the exc version is 5.5sp4 I have a 2003 domain which is on the same LAN but a different subnet. There is a working 2 way trust between the two domains. I have used the ADC to create a one way connection between the 5.5 and 2003 environment. This works. I now have a load of disabled accounts in the windows 2003 domain which correspond to the 5.5 environment. Now here is the question. I can use the "move mailbox" facility to move mailboxes between the 5.5 and 2003 exc servers. This certainly moves the mailbox as expected BUT the recipient who has had their mailbox moved disappears from the 5.5 recipient list. I would have thought that as the two servers were in the same organisation the location of the actual mailbox would not have mattered.     - Security Log fills up... Environment: Win2K AD. Exch 2000 and Exch 2003 mail servers installed. The Exch2K server is installed on Win2K. The Exch 2003 server is Windows 2003. (All current SP's and hotfixes) We just installed Exch 2003. We are preparing it for users mailboxes. (No users mailboxes are currently on the Exch 2003 server.) We audit Logons on all our servers. Local Security Settings ; Local Policies ; Audit Policies. We enabled Account Logon, Account Management, Logon Events, and System Events. Since we introduced Exchange 2003 into our AD, we have noticed ALOT of Event ID's 576, 540, and 538. They are all sucessful, but there are ALOT in a short amount of time. It is filling up the Security log so fast, it is almost making it useless. I suspect the Exch 2003 tools are issuing multiple logon's for certain tasks.     - moving mailboxes from 5.5 to 2003 across domains I'm trying to use ExMerge to move mailboxes from a 5.5 exchange box running NT4 (thing1) to a new 2003 exchange on Win2003 (thing2) and I'm getting inadequate permissions errors accessing the 5.5 stores. The domains are trusted and I've added thing2's admin to thing1's administrators/domain admin groups. I've added those groups to stores and server in 5.5 exchange administrator. I've set up so many admin rights on both sides I think exmerge is the only thing that has problems seeing everything on both servers. Still, when I get to the part where it's supposed to list the mailboxes to select from, I get "Error encountered getting mailbox information from the private information store database(s) on server "thing1". Make sure you have adequate permissions on the Information Store object..." I do notice that if I try to select search on the added users I've created in the information stores I get an error "You must first define an Anonymous Account on the DS Site Configuration object before an account can be granted the Search right.". Is that what's keeping ExMerge from getting the list of mailboxes? If so how do I fix that? Tag: SRS problem Tag: 109138

    - Exchange 2000\OL2002 'Deleted Items' folder issue... I have an installation of Exchange 2000 with Outlook 2002/OWA as clients. There seems to be an issue regarding the 'Deleted Items' folder in that messages placed there disappear (not immediately, but sometimes 15 minutes to a few hours later). There are no rules set up and the view on the Deleted Items folder is set to normal. I thought that the views were filtered in some way, so I sometimes log in with OWA since it does not use filtered views on folders. OWA shows the 'Deleted Items' folder empty just like OL2002 does. Under Exchange System Manager and Mail Store Properties\Limits Tab, I have set the deletion settings as follows: Keep deleted items for (days): 180 Keep deleted mailboxes for (days): 30 The 'do not permanently delete mailboxes and items until the store has been backed up' checkbox is unchecked.     - Syncronizing Exchange though WAN Hi All, I have bunch of roaming sales people that never go into the office, they have XP PRO loaded with Outlook 2002 (XP) Exchnage 2003 is running on our network with typical firewall, i got these remote people using POP to get their email.     - In Outlook 2k no option under services to connect to Exchange srv Hi, I have an SBS 2k with Exchange 2k environment with currently about 20 clients (win95, XP Pro) running Outlook 2000 SR-1. I am attempting to add a new XP Pro client with Outlook 2000 SR-1. The new XP client can log into the domain, the workstation is a member of the domain and the client can access shares on the server. Under Options in Outlook 2k I have the mail set for Corporate. The problem is under services in Outlook 2k there is no option for connecting to an Exchange server. All the other clients I set up had an option for this that I just selected. THere is a button on the side to 'add' a service but I dont know where to get the Exchange Server service to add. Background info: I'm attempting to install E2K3 on W2K3, DC is W2K SP4. I've also checked our reference domain (again E2K3 on W2K3, DC is W2K SP4). Although there appears to be no problems at all, E2K3 running fine, again I get the same kerberos netdiag issue.     - E2K/W2k to E2k3/W2k3 side-by-side upgrade process I'm in the process of planning out a Windows Server 2003/Exchange 2003 implementation within an existing Active Directory 2000, Exchange 2000 native mode environment. My existing Exchange environment consists of ~250 mailboxes and a handful of public folders running on a single back-end server (SVREX006), with OWA server by a single front-end server (SVREX007). Neither server is a Domain Controller or Global Catalog server - they exist separately (SVRGC001, SVRDC005). I have a new server that is going to act as our new E2k3/W2k3 back-end server. Ideally, I'd like to introduce this server into the existing environment and migrate a handful of mailboxes over for testing purposes. I've read that this won't be "easy" to do or supported by MS unless I upgrade my existing production front-end server first (which kind of sucks), but is not necessarily a problem per say, as I'm less concerned about doing an in-place upgrade of Exchange on the FE server. I've read I can toggle the FE-server flag on the FE server during the E2k3 install to get around the E2k FE issue, but I do want to test the new OWA/OMA, so... At any rate, here are the steps I'm planning on taking. If you can spot any holes or potential issues with any of them or point out anything I'm overlooking, I (and others that will eventually go through this) will appreciate it. 1. Take a full backup of the existing E2k/W2k front-end server 2. Upgrade the front end server to E2k3, then to W2k3 following the steps in Chapter 3 of the E2k3 Deployment Guide (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/Exchange2003/proddocs/library/DepGuide.asp) 3. Introduce new W2k3 back-end server (sans E2k3) into the current AD environment 4. Install E2k3 on the W2k3 back-end server, introducing it into the same organization and administrative group as the E2k/W2k 5. Wait for E2k3/W2k3 server will replicate with the E2k server 6. Manually migrate mailboxes (Active Directory Users & Computers - Move Mailbox) and public folders 7. Run DCPROMO on the old server to demote it to a member server 8. Create MX records pointing to the new server 9. Allow the two servers to co-exist for a period of time (to allow remote Outlook clients to point to new server automatically) 10. Remove the E2k/W2k back-end server from the site (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307917) and live happily ever after on E2k3/W2k3 11. Upgrade all Global Catalog servers to W2k3 12. We have a mixed exchange 5.5 and 2000 network. Currently we have one
exchange 5.5 server and one exchange 2000 server.
On exchange 2000 server by default SRS is installed.

Recently we introduced second exchange server into the site. While
configuring the SRS on second E2K server it simply hangs and gives the below
error.
We could not see this E2K server from exchange 5.5 admin console but seen
from exchange 2000 ESM.
