I've been called in to attempt to migrate some users from an almost
dead nt4 server over to a brand new sbs2003 server the company has
bought.

When I say almost dead I mean no one can log in locally to the machine
as the windows login screen seems to hang or never complete the login
process, yet everyone can access their network shares on the server and
some services seem to be up and running (like dhcp).

Other problems aside (such as the dhcp service still running on the nt4
server everytime it starts up meaning i can't have dhcp running on the
sbs2003 server), will i still be able to transfer mailboxes from the
copy of exchange 5.5 on the nt4 server over to the sbs2003 server using
the 'move mailbox' tool?

If not, suggestions?

No, you will have to export the user mailboxes using Exmerge.exe. SBS 2003
has be its own Root Forest so no joining Exchange Orgs.

John,

Will this work even if Exchange isn't running on the NT4 server? I'm
planning on booting the server from a recovery CD I have which runs the
XP operating system, have already done it once so I know it works. I'll
have access to all the drives on the machine but obviously Exchange
won't be running. Would it just be a simple case of installing Exmerge
into the Exchange folder on the NT4 server and running the application
to transfer the files?

Exmerge.exe from NT 4.0 Server will do the trick.
