Multiple mailboxes per user in Exchange 2003
This seems simple, but as a beginner to Exchange, I can't figure it out. When a user adds multiple POP3 accounts in Outlook, he/she can choose which is the default and which to use to send as for every message.
I need to do this using the Exchange addresses. I select the default address using the system manager, but the user simply receives the messages sent to the other accounts. How can I setup Exchange to allow the user to send from those accounts at will? That is, I want Outlook to act exactly the same with SMTP addresses as with multiple POP3 accounts.
Thanks in advance,

Exchange 2000 w/ Exchange 2003
We currently are running a single Exchange 2000 sever at our company. We
would like to add an Exchange 2003 server and mirror a dozen mailboxes for
the purpose of utilizing the Mobile Information Services technology that is
included with the 2003 server.
My questions are:
Will the two versions of Exchange Server coexist ?
Is it possible to mirror mailboxes between the two servers or must I move
the mailboxes?
Any information about the viability of this proposed configuration is
greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,

Is there any way to do an inplace upgrade of Exchange 5.5 to Ex 2003? If

but is there any way to upgrade 5.5 to 2003 on the same box? Thanks.

owa 500 internal server error
Hello,
We use outlook web access but users get a 500 internal server error.
Everything worked fine untill I used the LOG ON TO feature for the accounts
of the users.
Users are restricted to log on only to terminal servers.
When I change this setting to 'log on to all computers' owa works fine
again.
But I don't want users to have the possibillity to log on to all computers.
We have 7 servers. On one of these servers OWA is installed.
If I let users log on to all 7 servers (so I insert all 7 servers into the
'log on to feature') this damn
500 internal server comes in again.
Is there something I'm missing. If users can log on to all servers than this
must be enough I think???
thx in advance

Problems with Inbound POP amil being routed back out
I am trying to solve a mail routing problem.
I have a SBS 2003 using Exchange 2003.
My Users have external POP accounts at another ISP. I
setup the accounts in the POP3 Connector to be downloaded
and configured the SMTP Virtual Server to send the
outbound mail to the external domains directly (No Smart
host).
The errors depend on how I configure the user's email
accounts. If I configure the accounts to use the internal
domain as their email domain (user@domain.local), the
mail is refused by the external SMTP servers for the
domain being non-existent. If I setup their external
accounts(user@ispdomain.com) as the primary email
accounts, the inbound mail is routed back out to the
internet by the POP Mail Connector (Event Log reads: "The
message <id: {XXXXXX_XXXX_XX_XXX}> was routed to
<user@ispdomain.com> by an individual mailbox mapping.")
I would like their email to show their ispdomain.com
email addresses for all replies.

New Exchange 2000 install
Hi,
I would appreciate any assistance to solve my problem.
CURRENT SCENARIO:
1) Our org has 2 LANs (Windows NT Server and W2K Server) with a mix match
of 9x, NT and 2K Pro PCs. Both LANs are on different subnets and different
domains eg. Branch - BraDomain, Head Office - HODomain, however we are
connected via 64K lease line between branch and HO, and another 64K L/line
to ISP for internet traffic.
2) All clients at Branch and HO requiring internet access just have their
default gateway address as IP of the router at HO to ISP.
3) All external emails are hosted by ISP and I am tasked to deploy
Exchange in our organisation as the solution to our email problems and
communication needs.
WHAT I'VE DONE:
1) Created a test environment where I have 3 PCs to work with.
a) I installed W2K Server on Server-A with domain called pt.com.pg
and SP4. Installed Active Directory and configured DNS and tested etc.
Subnet is 192.168.1.0. Server is 192.168.1.200 which is also DNS ip
address.
b) Then on 2nd W2K Server called Server-B created child domain called
brancha.pt.com.pg and installed SP4. Subnet is 192.168.2.0. Server IP is
192.168.2.200
c) a) and b) are to emulate HO and Branch. In Server-A I've used 2
IP addresses (1 as primary IP of server e.g 192.168.1.200, the other IP as
"gateway" i.e. 192.168.70.254
In Server-B I've also used 2 IP addressess (1 as primary IP of server e.g.
192.168.2.200, the other IP is to enable connectivity between both domains
and it is 192.168.1.201 with primary DNS pointing to 192.168.1.200.
2) I can see entire pt.com.pg domain and branch.pt.com.pg domains from
either servers.
3) The 3rd PC I have is build with W2K pro as a client which I can join
into either domain to test from any of them.
I guess I am happy with Active Directory and DNS settings in the test
environment.
WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?
1) I've installed Exchange 2000 Server onto the Server-A machine with the
appropriate A and MX records in DNS and tested emailing which works fine
within HO alone.
2) I wish to test sending messages between users of both domains. Does
this mean I need to install Exchange at branch site? I was under the
impression you could setup users in AD at the branch domain for
authentication purposes, then they log on to mail server here at HO to
collect/send mails. I fear this may not be the case.
Basically I just wanted to have users log in locally to their DC (branch or
HO) then can send/receive mails internally or externally using exchange.
Of course this is all just in my test environment but once I understand the
concepts, would migrate to live later.
Please help. Any advise would be much appreciated!!

Exch2K3 OWA - BackOfficeStorage cannot find the path specified
With earlier versions of Exch whenever I saw this I would
simply re-make the path through the M drive, with Exch2K3
of course this isn't possible.
Have verified that the Active Directory Configuration
points to the correct location (and Exchweb and exchange-

The path seems to be correct...
\\.\BackOfficeStorage\[emaildomain]\MBX

Can I host a partial domain
Hi
Am new to Exchange. Have read through deployment guides, but can't find the answer to my problem
My organisation has approx 200 distributed users (mostly on 56k dial-ups) and 20 Head Office users (also using currently using dial-up)
The email domain is hosted at an ISP, with every user having the standard @whatever.org.uk address that they collect via POP3 using Outlook or Outlook Express
I've been charged with installing a network for the 20 HQ users, so they can benefit from file share, instant email, calendaring etc
I have been told that if I install an exchange server at HQ I need to collect and host the entire organisations email and not just the 20 HQ users. This seems crazy cos the 200 distributed users generate a lot of emails that will swamp our ADSL line. Is there a tidy way of collecting the 20 HQ users emails from the ISP and leaving the other users up there
Any help gratefully received

upgrade exchange 2000 to 2003

talk to the 5.5 servers with ADC or will the connections
have to be recreated. Also will the PDC roles as well as

upgrade I will go to each remote site and upgrade 5.5 to

upgrade from exchange 2000 to exchange 2003 on a different server
Hi all
I have a W2k E2k all patches, single server setup.
We now have another good spec server that will be added to the network, plan
is to install Win2003 and Exchange 2003 on it, with it being domain
controller as well.
We have already installed Windows 2003 on the new server, joining it to the
existing AD. Next step is to install exchange 2003 on it to join the same
Exchange organization. Then we plan to move mailboxes from the old Win2k/E2k
server to the new W2k3/E2k3 server.
And after that, we want to scrap the old W2k/E2k server, and rebuild it.
But the basic idea is to migrate from old low spec W2k/E2k server to new
good spec W2k3/E2k3 server. I have following plan in mind.
1. Install W2k3 on new server, join to the existing domain with it being DC.
2. Install E2k3 on the new server.
3. Move mailboxes to new server.
4. Scrap the old w2k/E2k server and rebuild it to W2k3 server, DC.
This will have a phase where, the new W2k3/E2k3 server will be the only
server on the network.
To do this, what issues I need to address, before I can scrap the old
server?
I know basic stuff like making the new exchange server to be the master
server in the routing group.
But is there anything else that I need to have a look at before I scrap the
old server?
Please reply.

When I access OWA and do any navigation other than the

Exchange 5.5 is up to date with all service packs. I
access the Exchange server by port redirection on my DSL

look at emails, delete emails and create/send emails).
It's when I go to places like the Deleted folder or the

The server can run indefinately if I just use Outlook 2000

Failed migration of public/system folders...
We migrated from Exchange 5.5 to 2003, by adding a W2K3
server with Exch 2003 to an existing 5.5 domain. After
moving all mailboxes successfully, the public folders were
migrated, and the old 5.5 server removed.
However, some of the public system folders failed to
move (primarily the Schedule+ Free/Busy, and the Offline
Address Folders).
I wasn't involved directly with the public folder move
or the 5.5 server removal, and suspect that something
happened during the process that caused the failure of
some system folders to fail in being migrated.
My boss spent over 60 hours on the phone with MS Tech
support, who didn't appear to even understand any of the
problems, and finally stated that they were going to close
the support case, still unsolved.
He's spent over 3 weeks in trying to address the
problems & is almost ready to either try erasing the 2003
server and reinstalling it from scratch (not upgrading
from 5.5), then trying to recover the private mailboxes
from a tape, or else moving to an entirely different mail
server product, such as OpenMail on Linux, or Lotus
Domino, etc.
I've been able to restore the system folders to the
\Folders\Puclic Folders\ tree in System Manager, but they
will not replicate to the server's Public Store, and I
cannot access properties for either folder instance.
Does anyone know how they can be repaired, or recreated
entirely?

Multiple POP3 Domains on SBS2000 with Exchange
I am currently running SBS2000 and 1 exchange server, using an

Connector and delivered accordingly. However, I have also configured
the connector to retrieve POP3 e-mails for our other external domain

Exchange 2003 - Clean install vs. Upgrade
We are currently running Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT4 and have about 50 users and 3 domains
We are moving to Exchange 2003 and I have a few questions on the best upgrade approach
We have purchased a new server for Exchange 2003 because our old server does not meet the minimum requirements
I am considering two options
Option 1
Install Windows NT 4 on the new server. Then install Exchange 5.5 and restore our data to the server. Then upgrade the operating system to Windows 2003 and finally upgrade Exchange to 2003
Option 2
Start fresh with a clean install of Windows 2003 then install Exchange 2003 and migrate over the mailboxes
I am not sure which option is the best approach or even the pros and cons of each. My gut says go with option 2 because clean is best and we have so few users. My concern is I have not supported multiple Exchange servers and I donâ??t know what I am getting into
Does anyone have any suggestions or feedback
Also does any know of any White Papers or How Toâ??s I can read up on

Migration Issue. Urgent.
Friends, I have a little and interesting question.
I am planning to migrate Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003, right?
But I havea doubt.
I will install a new server, migrate everything (this has been tested and
works perfect) mailboxes, public folders, etc. For example, the new server
it is called exchange2003, the old server it is called exchange55.
If I turn off the exchage55 server and change the exchange2003 name to
exchange55 (like the original one) and the IP addresses to the exchange55,
do the clients computers have to reconfigure they reading account
properties? Or I can leave the exchange 2003 name and IP addresses with out
modifying and make the changes in the DNS?, with this solution, the clients
does have to make any change?, because I am looking for the best solution
for the clients, they dont have access to modify anything and If I have to
go to each computer to change the profile I will get crazy soon.

Install of exchange 2003
Hi there,
I have read through a couple deployment guides and have a
couple questions before I go ahead and upgrade.
1. I have decided to install a new server with Windows
2003 as my Domain master for everything (PDC emulator)
I'll let this run for a week or two just to ensure
reliablity.
2. Once this has run for some time I will install exch
2003(I am currently running Win2K in native mode and Exch
2000 in native mode. I have about 8 exchnage 2000 servers
accross the country, will the domain prep and forest prep
effect my existing servers, as this will be a phased
approach and will do one server a month.
3. I will then have my exchange 2003 infustructure in
place, I think moving the mailbox's from the 2000 server
to the 2003 server will work the best for me, are there
any problems with a mailbox move from 2000 - 2003
Thanks for your assistance

Exchange 5.5 -> 2K3 - ADC Step 4 Problems
Hi Everyone,
We've recently upgraded to Windows 2003 at both of our sites, each site has
it's own domain (NOT in the same forest) but they are linked by a two-way
trust.
We were running Exchange 5.5, with a server at each site but in the same
organisation, the remote site has completed an upgrade to Exchange 2003 and
is happily using it. However now i'm trying to upgrade(well migrate) our
local exchange server, I've gotten through the install to the point of the
ADC Tools setup, the first three steps complete successfully. However the
4th stage, during the Connection Agreement Wizard when you have to specify
the Credentials for the individual sites the local site is fine, but the
remote site gives the following error:
"? Unable to find a responsive Exchange 5.5 server in the specified site.
The operation has completed successfully."
And you cannot proceed. I can't figure out if it's having problems accessing
the remote server, or if the problem is because the remote system is running
Exchange 5.5 and 2003!
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Static RPC ports
I have a firewall/static port mapping question.
A number of articles talk about assigning static ports for
Exchange. In particular the registry key of note is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Rpc\Internet
However I can't find where is it discussed how many ports
you need to reserve. Usually 20 ports are mentioned as an
example. How many ports do I need to "open/reserve" for
Exchange?
I'm sure it depends on the number of clients?? If I have
1500 recipients per Exchange server how many RPC ports
should I enter in the above registry key?

services if I should stop any of them.
Thanks in advance

How to preserve Rich Text Format on replies (Exch 5.5)??
Sorry about multiple positing, the first one got to the wrong group...
Our Exchange server is version 5.5. Users have both outlook 2000 and
2003.
I want to set up the Exchange server such that if a domain user
replies to a message that arrived in Rich Text format from another
Outlook user on the Internet the reply shall also be in rich text.
As it is now our users receive the message in rich text. Then they
reply and edit the reply with rich text so they can color code certain
parts of it. And they also copy the reply to a user in the same
company, i.e. on the same Exchange server.
But when the reply is sent out to the original sender he receives
the message in plaintext, whereas the internal user sees it in rich
text as does the sender if he looks in his sent items folder! So the
same message is different for these users, surely this cannot be
accepted!
If the sender changes the To: address, which has been put there by
Outlook after clicking the reply button, to the same address but
taken from his own address book, then the output message is in rich
text to all including the person on the Internet!
Obviously I want the message to retain its rich text format without
the users having to change the address of the message after making a
reply.
So where do I set this?? I have looked everywhere I can think of. In
the Exchange Server settings for Internet Email I have made every
change I can think of. Also in Outlook I have searched for this
setting, but with no success.
