    - Migration to Second Exchange Server - OWA Hi, I have added a second Exchange Server 2003 and have tested a few mailbox moves to it and Internal and External mail seem to be flowing through to it well. can anyone tell me the steps I should take in order to have OWA used on the second server? I would prefer to add the A and MX records to the new second server; is this common practice? I would assume that mailboxes on the first server would have one URL to web mail and the second servers mailboxes another. Is this possible? Lastly, it appears that my Public Folders are replicating properly as the second server mailboxes can access them fine. I thought I saw somewhere in this newsgroup a final step to move the Public Folders before shutting the first server down which is my ultimate goal.     - Exchange server to Exchange server communication I have a unique requirement that requires connectivity to a local Exchange server on the company LAN. We have an application that integrates and uses the scheduling, tasks, etc. features of Exchange/Outlook, but requires a special agent to run on the Exchange server. The current dilemma is that we currently use a off site third party hosted Exchange server as our email host due to total cost. The cost to bring it in house is high due primarily to other services provided by the third party such as Blackberry, Goodlink, etc., so at this time bringing it in house is not on the table. However, due to some company restructuring we will be absorbing a business entity into the main company network. This would provide another server that in this case is a SBS 2003 and is using Exchange. What I was thinking of doing is to integrate the SBS2003 machine into the LAN and join it to the domain, then create accounts on the Exchange server for integration with the application I mentioned in the first paragraph. Then I was going to allow the new local Exchange server to replicate/synchronize select user's accounts to the main third party hosted Exchange server. Does the concept make any sense? I know, why don't I just dump the third party hosted site? Well, as I mentioned before we would be faced with purchasing all the items that go with Blackberry, Goodlink, etc. and they are pretty expensive items. So, my main question: Can two Exchange Servers be configured to communicate in such a manner that basically replicates data from one server to another?     - Extreme newbie questions Hello everyone. I know very little about Exchange Server, so please be patient. Here's what I know: 1. We have email through Road Runner Business Class with a 10MB storage limit and an unknown sending limit on each user account. 2. We have a server running SBS 2003 and Exchange Server is installed but not configured (probably by default, but as I said, I'm new). 3. We have 5 workstations running XP Pro with Outlook installed (but not configured). 4. We have no website or internet domain. Here's what I'd like to accomplish: 1. Access a Road Runner email account through Outlook client and achieve perfect sync so that whatever email I send/receive/delete/move to different mail folders is reflected on any other workstation accessing the same account in Outlook. 2. Retain the Road Runner Business class domain on email addresses (@gtbizclass.com). 2. Implement spam filtering. 3. Implement a universal contact list that is accessible to all Outlook users. Are any of these possible (especially #'s 1 and 2) with Exchange Server? I was told that we needed to have an internet domain before we could configure Exchange Server.     - PF content migration Hi, Please advise: The issue: We are doing Exchange migr from 5.5 to 2K3. We have two exchange servers, one is 5.5 and the other is 2K3, and there is two trust in between. The Public Folder structrue tree (hierachy) has been replicated as supposed to be. And we did not start PFmigrate (we are doing intra-organizational migration) to migrate the PF content yet. Because of some application testing, we need to extract the content of some PF on Exchange 5.5 and put it on Exchange 2003 (which currently only has the structure tree but no content yet since we have not started the PF migration). AND, the users will still communicate through this application to the PFs on Exchange 5.5, WHILE developers are going to connect to the PFs "transferred" to Exchange 2003 - lets called it the transferred PF (TPF).     - OWA 2003 and Forms Based Authentification Hi all Im a a french administrator and i have troubles with enabling FBA (forms based authentification) on my Exchange 2003 sp2 (running on a windows 2000 sp4 server). SSL is set, FBA is enabled on my HTTP virtual serveur in Exchange manager, the owalogon isapi filter is running (green arrow). If i type http://myserver/exchange there is no redirection on the owalogon.asp and i am prompted for login and password as if FBA was not enabled. If i type http://myserver/exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp the right page is shown and asking for login and password, but after validation a new popup (same as case 1) arrives What do i need to verify ?     - OWA on Exchange 2003 Hi I have installed exchnage 2003 and this all works fine in the office, i tried OWA in the office and this is fine also, however im trying to access this from outside the office through our firewall and i cant seem to get this to work. Ive tried opening port 80 on the firewall, but still not getting anything. Can anybody give me some ideas to try out, also what would i type in to the address field of the web browser i had http://mail.company.com/exchange do i need to add a port here? also can i change the port that OWA uses so i could have it coming in on mail.company.com:3000 for eg? any help greatly appreciated.     - Dead server in Exchnage org. How to resolve? Server 2003 SP1 with Exchange 2003 SP2. I added a second server and moved the mailboxes to the second Exchange server. Then this new server died. ;-( I have an Exchange aware but not bricklevel backup of the first server, but that was made before I moved the mailboxes. According http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126 I can't use a recovery storage group in this situation because: "To use a Recovery Storage Group, the Active Directory topology of the Exchange Server 2003 computer must be intact and must be in the same state as when the copy of the database was made. This means that the mailbox or the mailboxes that you want to recover must not be deleted or purged from the system, or moved to a different database or to a different server." How to recover the data? Maybe I can rescue the files of the second server, but how to proceed then?     - Error code 0XC0070035 (53): Exchange 2003 SP2 Has anyone else had similar problems with Exchange 2003 SP2 (W2k3) We have 3 node cluster 2 Active and 1 passive CLuster. Installed EXchange SP2 on Passive Cluster 3 and no problems. Took Virtual Server offline apart from Network Name Resource, Physical Disk Resource, and ip addres resource and moved to Cluster3 . However wHen I try to upgrade Virtual Sever it comes up with error below. The only closest article I can find is 329229 and I have checked permissions and they appear to be correct.     - Moving Exchange Hello, I recently had an exchange raid array fail completely, the array controler failed. In order to save exchange I copied the exchange databases themselves. I didn't have a new array at the time all I had was a just a bunch of disk enclosure and no raid card to connect it to. So I set this up on the JBOD and now i want to raid this unit and move exchange to a new server. Does anyone know the best way I can do this? The problem is I need the same disk enclosure that exchange is currently on, but moved to a new server and raided. I was thinking that once again I could backup the exchange files to tape, move the unit to the new server, start exchange services on the old server creating blank user accounts, use exchange move to move them all to the new server, and then restore over top of them the correct exchange database files.     - Activesync - ? I have an exchange frontend/backend setup. i got one smartphone that is working with activesync with no problems. I just tried to setup another smartphone, installed 4.2 sync, imported the internal root ca cert, configured activesync with the frontend server, username, password, domain. when the smartphone starts to synch the error message says the user is not authorized. all users have mobile access, web access, etc enabled in their user properties. i installed a hotfix from microsoft that is suppose to address the problem, but that did not work. i at a loss, the phone is smarter than me. thanks for the help Tag: keep or not keep SMTP log files Tag: 150665

    - Migration Wizard Question What needs to be in place in order for the Exchange Migration wizard to work correctly. Let me give you my scenario. I have 2 different domains. Domain1 and Domain2 for question purposes. Domain1 has ExchangeServer1 on it and Domain2 has ExchangeServer2 on it. I want to copy the mailboxes, both private and public, from ExchangeServer1 to ExchangeServer2 using a Wizard. I tried both the wizard under deployment on the start menu and the exchange tasks... wizard. Neither will show both domains as options.     - An RPC communications error Three weeks ago I installed Exchange2k3 in my network in a migration from my Exchange5.5 server. One week later after moving mailboxes and with the help of a consultant I removed the Exchange5.5 server and took it offline. Now everything is running great except every ten minutes my Exchange2k3 server logs a "9318" warning in the Application Event Log of my Exchange2k3 server running Win2k3 as a DC. The warning actually says: ..."An RPC communications error occurred. Unable to bind over RPC. Locality Table (LTAB) index: 14, Windows 2000/MTA error code: 1722.     - Microsoft Exchange Site replication I'm trying to remove my Exchange 5.5 server from my exchange 2003 server. I can't connect to the 2003 server through the 5.5 admin program. I believe it's because my Microsoft Exchange Site replication service won't start. I get event id 7034, and error 1067 when trying to start the service.     - Exchange 2003:"The message being sent exceeds the message size established for this user" error despite adequate allowance The default send and delivery limits for our organisation are 30 MB each way, and I have been asked by management to allow exceptions to this limit for certain users. As a test I configured my own account with a limit of 50MB each way, but I get the error "The message being sent exceeds the message size established for this user" when trying to send out an email with an attachment of 33MB. There are no other limits set except at the global settings level and on this one account in AD, so I dont know why it is not working. Any ideas people?     - Global Address Hi I added a new email account in Exchange, and I'm trying to look for that user to show up in Global Address List in Outlook 2003. It's not there. I then select All Users from the drop-down (in address book), and I can see that new user there. So why is it not showing in Global Address List ? Is it some replication timing or something ?     - Reinstalling Exchange Server... We had one exchange server (standard edition, called Archimedes) installed on as a member server joined to the. That server is dead; effectively powered off and never to be brought back online again. I have a new Dell server on which I was going to install a new copy of Windows Server 2003 Standard edition. Iâ??d like to call this server Archimedes as well. Also, Iâ??m going to install a copy of Exchange Server Enterprise Edition (rather than Standard).     - AD Connector in mixed mode I have an exchange server 5.5 on a NT Box, I upgraded the domain to AD, Mixed mode, there are a few NT Boxes, so I cant move over to native mode right now, I am working on a swing migration to exchange 2003, when I run the active directory connector, I get to step 4, and receive a message when I run the Connection Agreement Wizard, that the "staging area of the domain is not in native mode. Group membership can not be properly maintained unless the staging area is in native domain mode".     - smtp frontend to internet I have an Exchange 2003 Frontend/Backend environment and I want to know if the Frontend server should be sending external SMTP mail. For example, when users on my private network send mail to external domains, the mail is being sent from my Backend server (i.e. Backend server is doing MX lookups and SMTP communication directly with outside mailservers). I would like the frontend server to do the SMTP sending. I have tried to setup an SMTP connector with Exchange Frontend as the local bridgehead and address space set to * and cost of 1 (no other SMTP connectors). Outbound mail gets queued up and never sent.     - CA issue error I change the FQDN for OWA to be mail.XXX.com. I revoke the cert and stop/restart the cert services. I even restart the IIS on the OWA server.     - "Cannot Retrieve Free/Busy information" - Exch 5.5 - 2003 Migratio We have recently Upgraded our exchange 5.5 to 2003. After Migration, many of our Outlook 2000 Clients get the following Error Message: "Unable to Update public free/busy data. The contents of the public folder are unavaliable. Either the Microsoft Exchange Server computer servicing this public folder is down or the public folder has not been replicated to the site. See your administrator". This is popping up every 10 mins or so on peoples workstations. Also, when scheduling a meeting, there is no free busy data under the scheduling tab. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?? I have looked around the web, and some articles have pointed to a folder in the public folder store which i dont seem to have, but I might of been reading the solution to the wrong version of exchange.     - Exchange 2000 Mail Boxes with Outlook 2003 A client accidentally deleted an active user (acad01) when he was cleaning up W2k AD. He then recreated the user again (acad01) along with a new mailbox. I got his docs / settings moved to the new profile. I went to ESM and saw his old mailbox (acad01, size 657,000) and another mailbox with a username (fhowell , size77,000) I asked him how he received his mail and he stated he gets it through (fhowell)? I reconnected to his acad01 mailbox but it seems to just send and receive internally.No outside mail. I then sent a test email to both acad01 and fhowell from my office I get no bounce back.     - Another exchange over RPC I have Exchange 2003 sp1 and internally can get Exchange over rpc to work just fine. However when I try to do it out side the network I can not get it to work. The computer I tested intenrally IS NOT PART of the domain. It gets as far as asking me for the username and password but after that it no says "The name could not be resolved. The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outllok must be online or connected to complete this action".(same username that works fine internally.     - RPC Over HTTP We have a FE/BE environment. We use OWA with FBA and SSL. We have port 443 open on firewall. Users type mail.domain.com to access thier owa mail. This works Fine and Dandy!     - Setting different default emails for different user groups I have a single domain environment with one Exchange 2003 Mailbox server and one Exch 2003 front end server which hosts OWA. We had 3 different divisions in the company and up until now it was acceptable for everyone to have a single e-mail domain. However our company has recently merged with another company and reorganized and the powers that be now want each division to have a different default (outbound) e-mail address (now a total of 5 different domains). I want to keep the old default address as a secondary address for existing users, but new users don't necessarily need to have the old default domain (unless exchange requires it for internal delivery.) I've figured out how to get the exchange server to send and receive messages for all of our domains. I have also already figured out how to manually set the default email as described in a previous thread: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs/browse_thread/thread/8d152722fa7b79bc/69bd69b0ec407a86%2369bd69b0ec407a86 That solution is fine when you are dealing with a handful of users, but a most of my groups are really too large for me to want to do that for everyone manually. On a whole we are talking somewhere in the neighborhood of 550 users, 549 of which need their default e-mail changed from the domain designated in the default recipient policy. The breakdown is roughly: 1 user = domain1.com (current default); 25 users = domain2.com (new parent co, most logical new default if there has to be one); 100 users = domain3.com; 100 users = domain4.com; 320 users = domain5.com I have two questions regarding this: 1. Is there a way to automatically update the default e-mail for a subset of users? Each of the groups are isolated into separate OUs in Active Directory, so I thought I could do a recipient policy with a filter based on an OU and designate the new address. However the stuff I've read on the internet suggests you can automatically add secondary addresses with recipient policies, but none of them suggest a way to make that additional address the default email for that group of users. 2. Going forward, is there a way to ensure that the system knows which default e-mail to give a user upon account creation rather than just the default recipient policy address? My gut tells me this and #1 might be achieved by modifying the default domain policy to reflect all of the domains with filters to say who gets what, but I really have no idea where to begin. How do I add Exchange Mailboxes and functionality for Users that were created before the Exchange Server was added? I also tried to add a new user, and the ability to add Exchange Mailbox/functionality was also not offered. Any clue as to why this is happening?     - Rename an Exchange 2003 Server after an upgrade? Hi all, I have recently completed an upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003, which as far as I can tell went smoothly. Howevere, I took the old Ex5.5 server off the domain, and then tried to rename the new Exchange 2k3 box to the old Exchange server name (so I don't have to change the server details for 100 or so clients) - but it didn't work. Exchange would not come back up, and event viewer logged errors, one of which told me I needed to change the name back.     - moving public folders (especially System folders) from 5.5 to 2003 pHi, I have one 5.5 server and one 2003. While the users mailboxes are easy enough to move, I am not sure what I am doing with the public folders. I have the ADC between the two servers with two-way replication CA for public folders but I am not sure if that is all I need to do. It appears you still have to go to FOLDERS/PUBLIC FOLDERS and click the individual folders' properties to actually enable the replication...despite having the ADC public folder connection agreement? I assume this because if I go to the 2003 server in System Manager and look at its PUBLIC FOLDER STORE\ replication status, it only has the folders I manually configured. Also my ADC is set to replicate ALWAYS, but the last replication was a few days ago. For instance one of the folders just holds a calendar that people seem to want to share, will the replication be triggered if someone adds a date to the calender, or only if the calendar is moved? Seems it should be any change. On my 2003 server under PUBLIC FOLDER STORE/folders, I see all the public folders that are on my 5.5 server and should be in the site, but if look at my 5.5 server from my 2003 server's system manager, I can't access the Public folder store. I can access the private store on the 5.5 fine...that is how I moved the mailboxes, but not the public store. I don't have many public folders so I can do it manually if I have to, but I thought the ADC would take care of it. Secondly, I am not sure how to replicate the System Folders. Is the only way the PFMIGRATE tool? There is no GUI way? Again I can see the System Folders under my 2003 server's PUBLIC FOLDER STORE/Pulic folders, but I assume that doesn't mean they are getting replicated...despite having the ADC public folder CA. I see this command: pfmigrate.wsf /S:Exch55srv /T:ex2003srv /A ?N:100 /F:c:\PF_Status_01.log will that just set up replication or does it actually move them? Will moving them mean I have to take off the 5.5 server more quickly? Also there is a system folder for my Nornton for Exchange 5.5 that I don't know if I'd really want over on my Exchange 2003 server...unless that doesn't matter...as long as the Norton for Exchange software would know it got moved? Then at some point I'd run pfmigrate.wsf /S:Exch55srv /T:ex2003serv /D to get rid of all the public folders on the 5.5 server? Does that get the system files too? SORRY that is a lot of questions..... Again if there is a gui way for this I'd like to know, but if not, I want to make sure I have the right command line switches here and that running it will leave everything functional when it is done.     - Upgrading Exchange 5.5 to 2003 - Several Issues Hi all, I am in the process of testing an upgrade of an Exchange 5.5 server to 2003. We have cloned the servers so we can test without issue, and it was all going well - but now I've started to move the mailboxes, I have a couple of issues. - I'm using the Exchange Server Deployment Tools (Version: SP1), and I am at the "Move Mailboxes" section. In Step 6 it says "In Move Mailbox, select Same Administrative Group Move" - I don't have anything that says "Same Administrative Group Move" or, for that fact, "Cross Administrative Group Move", I only have the three drop downs which are referred to in step 7 (Current Mailbox Store, Server, and Mailbox Store). So I can't make this selection - is this an issue? - When I start moving mailboxes (ignoring the above issue), some mailboxes are failing on "Opening Destination Mailbox". With a search, I came across Microsoft KB 278966, but the KB article is talking about *disabled* accounts. None of my failed accounts are disabled. Also, the KB article says to go to AD, and look at "Mailbox Rights" - but my AD doesn't have any Exchange tabs in it yet - so I couldn't select it even if I wanted to. Do I simply do the following: Create the users from Forest 2 as contacts in forest 1 Give them a primary smtp address of @forest2.com Create an SMTP connector in forest 1 and give this an address space of forest2.com Get the forest 2 owners to assign the @forest2.com smtp address as a secondary address on the users mailboxes and create a recipient policy that accepts mail for this address Is this the best way to achieve what I want? Or could I just import the users from forest 2 into forest 1 with their existing primary SMTP address and create a connector to support this address space which would be configured to send mail to the forest2 mail server? Regarding the above, I am unsure of how Exchange in forest 1 will treat a message addressed to an address that it is authoratative for. tape media and store them to a remote side? Delete them after 1 year or 6

SMTP logs are good for troubleshooting. Question to ask: how long does it
take for your users to report a message missing/not delivered, either
inbound or outbound? The logs stop being useful for most purposes after
about a week, imo... 7/14 days would be a good timeframe to retain them
from, unless you have specific compliance requirements (I've yet to come
across any compliance requirements thta dictate retaining SMTP logs for any
period).

Same rule can be applied for Message Tracking Logs as well.
