this maybe a stupid question but do you have to create a smtp virtual server
through the internet mail wizard or is this option.

An SMTP virtual server is automatically created when you install Exchange
2000 or Exchange 2003.

The SMTP virtual server can handle internet mail flow without the need to
configure an SMTP connector.
If you want to configure a specific server as a SMTP bridgehead or forward
email to a smart host you can configure an SMTP connector by following the
instructions in:
265293 How to Configure the SMTP Connector in Exchange
