My new Exchange Upgrade Scenerio
Here is my new plan of attack for upgrading my E2K box to E2K3, please let me
know if this will not work or am missing any steps:
Currently, I have a W2k server running E2k. My Plan:
Stop Exchange Services
Make a copy of the DB.
Make a 2nd copy of the DB.
Compact the E2K DB.
Attach the compacted DB to E2K
Start Exchange Services.
Ensure Exchange works properly.
IF SO.......
perform setup /forestprep /domainprep on W2K box
Upgrade E2K to E2K3
Start E2K3 Services
Ensure everything works under the E2K3 Service
IF SO......
stop Exchange Service.
Copy E2K3 DB and move to a new Server running W2k3 and E2K3.
reattache DB to New Server.
Remove OLD Server from Network.
Rename new W2k3 and E2k3 server to OLD Server name with the same IP.
Join to Network.
Start Exchange Services.
Will this scenerio work? Any flaws?
Does the priv.stm file serv any purpose? If so, what is it?
Much appreciated. Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 147056
Migrating from ISP POP3 Accounts to Exchange with OWA
My organization currently gets email from our ISP via POP3. All the
users have Outlook 2003 as a client and thus their email resides in a
PST file.
Now we are setting up an Exchange FrontEnd/BackEnd configuration. So
far, the two Windows 2003 servers seem to be able to talk to each
other and send email. OWA works on both machines.
I have these problems/questions:
1) I set up a test mailbox. Inside the network, the user has both a
mailbox and a PST file. Obviously, from outside the network (using
OWA), the PST file cannot be seen. However any email placed in the
inbox of the mailbox does NOT show up when looked at via OWA. When
email is moved via OWA to the Drafts folder, for example, it does
appear when looked at from the inside network. What's going on here?
2) I have remote users that are always outside the network. As above,
they rely exclusively on POP3 to the ISP. Now they will have an
Exchange mailbox. Is there a best practice/standard procedure for
what to do with their PST files? Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 147055

Why do I need @Domain.com on my pop3 account?
I recently rebuilt my Windows 2003 Enterprise server, and now I need to have
the @Domain.com added to all of my POP3 users. I can't figure out what I did
differently that is causing this to be required. Can anyone give me a
pointer on where to look?

OMA operation
I am having problems configuring Active Sync and OMA. When sending emails to
domains outside of our internal corporate domain using a smart phone (running
Mobile 5.0), the message body is removed. If I check the mailbox Sent Items
folder, the message is intact. I tested the process using OMA, and the same
issue occurs. it seems during some conversion process, the message body is
removed.
any ideas on how to fix this?
it is not the mobile device since i have tested the configuration with both
Palm Treo devices (Windows and PalmOS versions), and the Motorola Q. I has
also eliminated the carriers since Sprint and Verizon devices have the same
issue. Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 147036

WHY DOES OWA SUX so bad.
Why does OWA not work all the time!

OWA blank for some users
I have a user that when he tries to connect to either our front end server

blank page. nothen, else, just blank.
Other users off the same server are coming up just fine?

Bandwidth Considerations
I have an Exchange 2K System set up and running on a full T1 right now.
The Client is moving the office to a new location and the only available
connection is DSL or cable at approx. 3mb down and 256k up.
Will I have problems?

Migrate Exchange 5.5 to 2000 and NT4 to 2000 server
Hello,
I have to migrate a complete and only server (server 1) in a domain from Nt4
to Windows 2000. The server also has exchange 5.5 servicepack 4 installed.
The problem I have is that the hardware is falling apart, so everthing has
to be redone on a new server.
When I'm done, I'd like to have windows 2000 server, exchange 2000 as well
as all users and their emails on new hardware (server 3). I thought I'd
appraoch this by setting up a BDC (server 2) on some older compatible
hardware. (The new hardware does not support windows NT.) After taking this
off the net and promoting it to a PDC, I'd then run windows 2000 over it.
After hookong it back up I'd like to promote the new hardware (server 3) to
a DC and then demote the temporary DC (server 2) and take it offline. Now I
would install exchange 2000 on server 3 (new hardware). This would leave me
with the old server with all the users and their emails untouched and the
new server with the users and no emails yet. Somehow I'd then get the emails
from the old server to the new server.
Would this work? I have read many "How tos" and they all say to upgrade to
windows 2000 server. It is not clear to me if the server with exchange 5.5
is meant or if any one server in the domain can be a windows 2000 server DC.
Or does the the old server have to upgraded to windows 2000 for all of this
to work? I don't want to touch it, I'm scared it might fall apart :-).
Thanks,

RPC over HTTP from termina server
I have setup Exchange 2003 (on a single server) and accessing mailboxes from
Windows XP client run Outlook 2003 using RPC over HTTP. Works perfectly nice
elegant solution.
However I can't access this same server from a Terminal Server 2003 running
Outlook 2003.
I appreciate that RPC over HTTP requisite is Windows XP (with applied patch)
and it is implied that Windows Server 2003 is not supported - can someone
confirm this - or give a hint as to how I can achieve this (Access Exchange
2003 mailbox from a Terminal Server 2003 with Outlook 2003 via RPC over

Content filtering
We have just recently installed the IMF v1 and upgraded to Exchange server
2003 sp2. It appears all is working and our filters are set to 7 and 4... but
how do we:
1) Filter the from if it is truly a bad email address? The only thing
correct it the domain. such as: From: Pauline Caron
[mailto:jtgeoffl@XXXXXXXX.com]
Part of teh email address is correct but they have thrown in some additional
initials which don't match anything in the AD.
2) How do we filter out the bad recipients from AD.
3) How do we set up the content filtering on this:

public folder on second exchange server
Hi Experts,
again,in a one domain two sites, one org, one AG, two RG system, the second
exchange server is recently installed.
The public folder on the second exchange server has not been created
although the default public folder store is there. However, it is noted that
users on the second exchange server can see public folders on the first
exchange server. If all the users on the second exchange server browse to
the public folder on the first exchange server the bandwidth cost will be
high. My questions are:
1. Is this normal?
2. How can I stop users on the second exchange server seeing the public
folders on the first exchange server?
3. I wish users on the first exchane server see only public folderson the
first server, users on the second exchange server see public folders only on
the second exchange server. How can I configure for this? Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 146968
NEED HELP!
I am in a bad situation. I reinstalled a Dell PowerEdge Server with Windows
2003 Server R2 and I installed Exchange 2003 also. I rebuilt all users and
mailboxes in AD. I have all my .pst's from backup so I planned on restoring
those and then allowing all incoming mail to arrive. When I created Ad, I
used a .local extension because I don't have a website in house and my ISP
uses an MX record to forward mail to our Exchange server. It worked fine with
Exchange 2000. Now, I can't receive mail. I can send out mail and send mail
internally, but I can't receive any mail. I am at the point of going back to
the way it was. I had to rebuild the server due to space issues on the system
drive. I had to add a drive to create more space. Any thoughts on this issue? Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 146948
Public Folders
My question is if I set limits on the Public Folder Store level and set each
specific public subfolder to use the store limit that means that EACH
subfolder will use the limits set on the Public Folder store, right?
My confusion on this is that I'm thinking that setting, for example, a 30MB
limit on the Public Folder Store level means that the ENTIRE public folder
structure cannot exceed this 30MB limit. I am incorrect on this right?
Setting the 30MB limit on the Public Folder Store level means that EACH
public subfolder has a 30MB limit, right?

Exmerge
I need to move all of our sales force (60 plus users) from PST file
storage to OST, pulling their local storage back up onto the server. I
would like to use ExMerge to do this, obviously only using the second

Does ExMerge work with any PST file or only with those it has created?

Migration Outlook to Hosted Exchange 2003
I have moved from POP mail into Outlook to a hosted Exchange 2003
solution (still using Outlook 2003 but with new mail profile). I want
my old emails to be accessible from new environment including OWA
(therefore can't just attach new data file). The PST file is 270 Meg.
I have a laptop and a desktop that will access the hosted environment
(same user account/mailbox). The problem is that high speed internet is
not accessible at my office - only slow dial up. So the desktop has
to stay put, but I can take the laptop to high-speed internet cafe.
I have copied my old PST file and sent to the hosting service. They
will apply at the server. Once this occurs, I understand that there
will be a sync process? Once this completes on the laptop with
high-speed, can I copy the sync information to the desktop? I don't
see how a sync process with 270 Meg can be done via dial-up.

5.5 to 2K3 Migration
Hi,
We have an Ex 5.5. We plan on upgrading to
Ex 2K3/server 2K3. However, I am having having a problem during Exdeploy.
I am at the point where it would start installing the ADC, and its asking
for the account that the ADC will use when running. In the login field, it
shows the new domain name\administrator, but the admin password will not
work. I went through the suggested Prescriptive Checklist for installing
Exchange 2K3 and
everything runs fine until I get to this point. All logs checked during
install.
Another issue, is our 5.5 is in a domain by itself (old), and all
users/servers (and new exchange) are in another domain(new). I have not set
up any type of trust yet.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

Exchange 2000 - 2003 Upgrade Scenerio
Here is my scenerio:
1 - W2k DC running SQL 2000 and Exchange 2000
5 - W2K DC
2 - W2k Member Servers
1 - W2K3 DC
Last week, we did the forestprep and domainrep for your domain. Since then
we have established a 2003 box as a DC.
Now we are wanting to Upgrade Exchange.
We have a new server that is currently a W2k3 Member Server that we would
like to make our new W2k3 Exchange Box. We would like to move the current
2000 Exchange data to the new 2003 box and eventually remove the current 2000
Exchange box.
What are the necessary steps, to do this? Does anyone have any good
documents on this?

Can't access OWA on New Front-End Server
Hi Guys:
We had a single Exchangeserver on a DC. We want to do OWA/OMA through a FE,
turning the formally single Exchange server into a BE.
Purchased the new server, add licenses for Windows & Exchange.
Installed server, OS & Exchange, patched to latest.
Checked the tick on the FE to make it a FE. Restarted FE.
When I try to access FE OWA (https://FEipaddress/exchange), I get "page can
not be displayed".
When I try to acces the BE OWA (https://BEipaddress/exchange) it works fine.
BE asks for user ID, FE does not.
Reading through the other messages, I think I need to transfer my SSL
certificate from BE to FE. Correct? How do I do that? I am unable to find
appropriate KB articles.
Please let me know if
(a) I am on the right track
(b) What else I should look at.
(c) If I am on the right track what do I need to do to transfer the
certificates (or do I need to purchase a sep. certificate for FE?). KB
articles would be much appreciated.
All servers are patched to latest Windows and Exchange patches. All servers
Win2K3, Exchange 2k3 (Std in all cases). Servers are currently in the same
network subnet (no FW or routers in between). FE will be placed in DMZ later
after I know this works.

Server side rule for all mailboxes
Hi,
small info for Exchange 2003 Ent.Edt. admin.
Can we create somehow, general server side rule, that will apply for all
mailboxes in Exchange system. Can be on some Storage Group, Exchange level
or whatever.
We found some third party stuff and it works OK
(http://www.mapilab.com/exchange/rules), but is there some "standard"
Exchange 2003 capability for doing such a thing. Is there some API or
something easy for this capability?
We just have to redirect some mail message for all users to one folder in
their mailbox.

Hard Drive Configuration for Exchange 2003
Our existing configuration:
1) AD Server running W2K3
2) W2K3 Server running Exchange 2003 Enterprise
a. 2 x 72GB drives Mirrored
b. 7 x 72GB RAID5
3) 125 Exchange Users with 1GB Space each
Question #1:
Iâ??ve read that the following should be on separate drives:
1) W2K3
2) Exchange Application Files
3) Exchange DB Files
4) Exchange Transaction Log files
How should this be done and what size should each partition be? Should we
place do the following?
1) Mirrored Drives
a. Install W2K3 on C Drive (14GB)
b. Install Exchange Transaction Log Files on D Drive (18GB)
2) RAID5
a. Install Application files on E Drive (14GB)
b. Install DB Files on F Drive (202GB)
Question #2:
During setup do you have the option to install the three Exchange items
(Application files, DB files, and transaction log files) on different drives
or are the files relocated after the install is complete? What are the
default locations for each of these items?
Thanks,

Error Message 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for
Please help, I am setting up a new network and I thought I had everything
fine until I started getting this error everytime I sent an email outside the
domain.
using latest patched exch 2003 on SBS.
configured the domain controller with domain
and the outsite domain is different so I configured the domain name in the
recipient policy on the exchange server to be outside domainname.com.
I setup my outlook 2003 currently to pop email but I have put in the local
server name for sending as I cant move people over to the exchange box yet
since the email is going to the outside server which is using pop. Therefore
I thought I would setup email this way have it working then once we switched
the DNS get the outlook account switched over to the exchange client when the
local server is the live one.
ANYONE know why I get this error 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for when I send
through outlook with the above setup but when I send through webmail to the
outside I am fine?

Messenger 2000 Server Problems Logging in
I setup our only 2000 Server with exchange 2000 server messenging
service(only messaging portion) and cannot login to the server. I added user
permissions via Exchange tasks and confirmed the logins in the properties.
I'm using the Messenger 2.2 client provided on the disk that I loaded Instant
Messenging Server with. I have dns enabled on this server but instead use
NAT provided by the linksys router. Some clients are XP Home and XP pro all
running on the local machine account. The users all have permissions to
certain shared folders on the server as well. Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 146843
ADPREP / FORESTPREP
When installing exchange on a member server do you run ADprep and Forest
prep from the member server or on the DC?

RPC problems with new Exchange 2003 server
I have just spent the best part of two days trying to work out why I
could not connect Outlook to our new Exchange 2003 Server.
It had to be an RPC issue on the server as the clients could connect to
our old Exchange 2000 server. OWA worked fine.
It turned out that somehow the PRC service on the server (it was a
fresh install on new hardware) was using the NT
AUTHORITY\NetworkService account. Once I changed this to the Local
System (and rebooted) every thing started to work. Tag: http://www.ebvalues.com Tag: 146831
Exchange 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2003 R2
Hello all,
I plan to upgrade a Windows Server 2003 SP1 (domain controler), running with
Exchange 2003 SP2, to Windows Server 2003 R2.
Does anybody have expieriences with this?
Or, are there reasons to stop this plan?
Or is there anything to do before I upgrade the server?
Many thanks,

Exchange Migration - public folders
Hi,
I have a native mode Exchange 2000 organization running on Windows 2000,
front-end/backend config, that I want to migrate to an Exchange 2003
org, on new hardware running Windows 2003.
I found http://www.msexchange.org/pages/article_p.asp?id=708, and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307917&Product=exch2k
which seem to answers my exact procedural needs. There are minor
discrepancies between the two, however.
I've already installed Windows 2003 with all updates on the new server
(server3), Exchange 2003 and SP2. I've upgraded the Front-end server to
2003. The Exchange 2000 box (Server0) has had all SPs, hotfixes, patches
and roll-ups applied. I ran forestprep and domain prep with adprep, and
with exchange's setup, but not on the original Windows2000 PDC, since
I'd already migrated that function (and others) to a new Windows 2003
domain controller (not the same box as server3). Should I run the
various prep's on the 2003 DC?
In short, I'm stuck near the beginning with Public Folder replication.
On server3's ESM, I connected to server0's public store, and set
replication on a couple of folders. I made sure to add server3 to the
replication. Now, while the status of server0 is In Sync, server3's is
Modified Local.
We've created a new public folder on server3. It replicates to server0
no problem, and users whose mailbox is on server0 can post and view
messages to it. however, new users on server3 do not even view the
public folders on server0.
OWA on the frontend is fine, though only for access to the mailboxes and
public folders on server0.
Help. I've been scouring MS's Knowledge Base. I've turned on logging to
view the replication messages (per KB842273). As expected, those going
from Server0 to server3 are sumitted (content, status and status
requests), but do not actually arrive on server3. The process does
complete when sending from server3 to server0.
I have a vague hunch that this problem is permission-related, but other
than permissions in the ESM, which all seem to have the correct
permissions assigned to the Exchange Admin, Domain Admin, etc. groups, I
don't know where to look. I've been through the Client Permissions,
Directory Rights and Administrative Rights on the top-level folder in
ESM and they look correct. Domain Admins cannot log into mailboxes on
server3, though they can on server0
There are no hints in the Applog. Server0's contain status requests
sent, server3's do not have the corresponding ones.
Help, please.

Does SMTP connection filter work or not work behind ISA 2004?
Two days ago I setup Connection Filter with CBL RBL database. In this two
days I could see that emails from blocked IP go in as before.
My server structure has a ISA 2004 (10.0.0.1) firewall with SMTP filter
(.zip, .exe.,....) and another server Exchange 2003 (10.0.0.8) with
connection filter setted to RBL.
I have the suspect that the second SMTP filter receive emails with ISA
2004's IP as sender and even it accept them becouse it don't find them on
RBL.
How can I see blocked email from the second SMTP? Am I in right with my
suspect?
Thanks,
