Windows 2000 DC w/Exchange 2003 upgrade to Windows 2003 DC w/Exchange 2003
Hi
We currently have 2 DCs. SERVER2 is Windows 2003 DC (all FSMO roles),
GC, DNS, WINS. SERVER1 is Windows 2000 DC, Exchange 2003, DNS, WINS.
I need to upgrade SERVER1 to Windows 2003 DC. I know hosting Exchange
on a DC isn't recommended, but size and budget limitations mean this is
the only option I have (if I want to have 2 DCs on the network). I
have no additional hardware. Partitions on SERVER1 need to be resized
as C: drive only has 1.5GB free.
Bit of a nightmare, I know! However, does anyone have any suggestions?
I will obviously read-up and test in a lab envt first, however, off the
top of my head, I was thinking:
(1) Backup Exchange 2003 database on SERVER1
(2) Shutdown SERVER1
(3) Metadata cleanup of SERVER1 in AD and DNS.
(4) Clean install Windows 2003 on SERVER1 with repartitioned HDs.
(5) dcpromo SERVER1.
(6) Install DNS / WINS
(7) Clean install Exchange 2003 with /disasterrecovery switch. Is this
possible given the fact that I'll be doing a metadata cleanup of
SERVER1 DC entries in AD as a previous step?
(8) Restore Exchange 2003 databases.
Any comments and advice greatly appreciated!

Qmail and Exchange server 2003
Hi All,
Currently we have a Qmail server running our mail of course, Spamassasin ,
Anti-virus protection, etc. We have a mix of Outlook and Thunderbird clients
pointing to this Qmail server.
Wanted to purchase Exchange server 2003 to handle Calendering/Scheduling
needs only, and we would like is to keep our existing Qmail server for our
email.
Please advise!
Much appreciated,

Free Busy data - how to keep it as up-to-date as possible
Our company is on the verge of implementing Outlook as our calendaring and
scheduling tool. The free/busy data does not work as I expect it would for
invite requests. Ideally, all attendees invited would show as tentative on
the free/busy views until they actually viewed their meeting request in their
mailbox. What I'm finding is only the attendees that have the Outlook client
running are getting updated as tentative (or if they act on the meeting
request then a status of accept/decline/etc shows up). If someone is out of
the office on vacation and their Outlook client isn't running, the meeting
requested times are NOT blocked as tentative for free/busy searches. This
poses a problem for many of our users who travel and will not access their
Outlook until they are in the office. The knowledgebase help I've found so
far reinforces my findings.
Is there a way to have everyone's meeting requests processed as tentative
for free/busy search purposes whether the client is running or not, until
they can act on the meeting request in their inbox ?
We are also using an auto accept agent that is running as a service on our
exchange server for resources such as rooms and AV equipement. It will accept
meeting requests automatically for the resoures. Our resources are setup
using a CAL. Anyone know of an equivalent agent that would process meeting
requests in all users mailboxes as 'tentative' automatically? This would keep
the Free Busy map updated at all times.

Upon further investigation, I found this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822583
Under the workaround section, i followed the steps and found that Dynamic
updates are set to Secure Only
did the net stop and net start netlogon
after running netdiag /fix, it failed the DNS test with lots of
DNS_ERROR_RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE messages and, at the very end, said
[FATAL] No DNS Servers have the DNS records for the DC registered.
So... I ran through my DNS wizard again, then ran ipconfig /flushdns and
ipconfig /registerdns
and netdiag /fix still gives me lots of errors. I'm not sure where to start
to get this resolved, but any and all recommendations would be greatly
appreciated.

Exchange between continets
Hello,
I need to provide Exchange services for an organistion that has offices in
US, UK and Belgium. What are the possible solutions?
First I thought about setting one Exchnage server for each location.
VPN, pop3, https? In case of using vpn I'm afraid the link will be
overloaded with the traffic between Exchange servers - is there a
possibility to limit it to a certain level (500 kbps)?
Also how safe is the use of connection to Exchange Server over https?

Adding 2nd B/E server...
I have inherited an exchange setup as follows, 1 f/e Windows 2003 Ent. and
Exchange 2003 Ent. and one b/e Windows 2003 Ent. and Exchange 2003 Ent. the
b/e is running out of disk space and in lieu of purchasing new h/w for the
messaging infrastructure, I have been told to implement a band-aid solution
by using a free server in the office as a 2nd b/e. I have a few questions on
the process nad ramifications:
1. Whats the easiest way to add a 2nd b/e end server and move one of the
current mail stores from b/e #1 to b/e #2?
2. How will this mail store move affect the clients whose mailboxes are
contained in this mail store?
3. Will the move break their connection or will AD take over and remedey the
connection?
4. Will the f/e server automatically forward any OWA connections to the new
b/e for those users? If not, do I need to create a routing group or will AD
take over w/o the need for a routing group?

1 forest to root domains and 2 exchange servers
I have 1 forest with 2 root domains. In the primary domain companya.internal
we are running exchange 2003 with email addresses as companya.com, we created
a second root domain for companyb.internal & want there email addresses as
companyb.com in the second domain it has it's own exchange server so now we
have 2 exchange servers. Why is the new exchange server in domain
companyb.internal when creating new accounts give them the companya.com
address as the email address?
I want users that are created in companya.internal to have companya.com
addresses (This currently still works the way it has for years). But I want
users that are created on the companyb.internal domain to have companyb.com
address by default?
It is like exchange added the new exchange server to the companya
organization group and did not create its own companyb organization group. I
am not trying to host multiple smtp domains on one server I want them on
seperate servers the MX records point to the corasponding exchange servers
for each company's domain.
Can not find any good papers on setting up multiple exchange servers in
multiple domains in the same forest keeping the domain namespaces seperate.

Hello,
We have Windows 2003, Exchange 2003, ISA 2004, and Symantec Corp 10.
We can not send e-mail thru our Exchange server about 2 weeks ago. We did
not change any setting. I thought Mcafee enterprise 8.0 block port 25, then I
unintall Mcafee change to Symantec. But I still have same problem.
In the Event View, I will get the eveni ID 4006.
In the Exchange System Manage, I can see alot of messages in the Queses.
If I restart the server, all the messages in the queue will send out right
away, then just stop.
I tried to add smarthost smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, but still have same
problem.

Performing a Reverse Lookup on Incoming Messages
Hi,
There is a setting in Exchange that says Perform Reverse DNS Lookup On
Incoming Messages. What is the benefit of this? Does this help
prevent email from bogus domains? SPAM?
I am getting an error when I try to send to a certain domain.
The remote host "216.240.32.17", responded to the SMTP command "rcpt"
with "450 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [MY MAIL
SERVER'S IP] ". The full command sent was "RCPT TO:<emailaddress> ".
This may cause the connection to fail. For more information, click
http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.
I am guessing that the remote mail server has the Reverse DNS Lookup
enabled and my mail server doesn't have a ptr record.
Can anyone confirm my thinking??

Exchange 5.5 mailbox migration to AD
I have an easy question about moving mailboxes to between 5.5 and AD.
I've installed Exchange 2003 into an existing 5.5 org. I have my ADC up and
it has created a bunch of disabled objects in AD for each 5.5 mailbox.
Unfortunately, I migrated all of my user accounts and groups after the ADC
was in place. In many cases the AD users are using their AD account but are
tied their Exchange 5.5 mailboxes.
How can I migrate the mailboxes from 5.5 to active directory and still let
my users keep their existing AD accounts? I've read that the Active
Directory cleanup Wizard may help with this. Is this the appropriate tool?
Can someone provide a general outline or point me to a reference on how this
tool works and if it is the solution I'm looking for?

Standard Edition Vs. Enterprise Edition
Hey folks,
I am trying to see what would the deciding factor be if I needed to
purchase Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition Vs. Enterprise Edition.
I have about 400 Mailboxes currently. Users Archive emails off the
current 2003 Standard server to a local PST, I have size limits set to
100MB per user.
I know that theres a difference in storage sizes:
- Maximum 75 gigabytes (GB) per database1 (SP2)
- Maximum 16 terabytes, limited only by hardware2
What other reasons would I have, other than unlimited Storage sizes, to
upgrade to Server 2003 Enterprise Edition?
I do have plans to place another Exchange server in my DR site which
Ill use a third party tool to replicate data across. So I want to know
if I need 2003 Enterprise in order to do this also.

Migration of Public Folders from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003
Hello,
This is my first post to this discussion group - please be gentle!
We are migrating from Exchange Server 2000 to Exchange 2003. I have moved
*all* mailboxes and left the Public Folders until last (big mistake).
In a nutshell, the folders are not replicating. I have used the pfMigrate
tool to setup the folders for migration. I have verified that all the Public
Folders are set to replicate to both the old and new servers. I have
verified that the email address (proxyAddresses) are setup correctly for both
servers using ADSIEdit.
I have setup logging to the suggested levels and there is nothing obvious in
the Event Viewer. I do see the Replication Outgoing Messages on both servers
but no Replication Inbound Messages on either. I have not been able to see
the inbound message in the Message Tracking Log either.
This server has been up and running with replication for about ten days and
this issue has me stumped. Email messages addressed from a mailbox on the
new server to a test mailbox on the old server are transferred just fine.
Do I need to create a connector for Public Folder replication? Any

Move exchange 2003 to 64 bit
I would like to move my exchange 2003 server to new hardware and keep the
same name. I have seen the article that discusses it, but it says it should
be running the same software. Does that mean if i want to install win2003 64
bit (is running 32 bit on old server) i am not able to keep the same name?
or does it not matter if it is running 32 bit vs 64 bit as long as it is
running windows 2003 server? I hope that made sense.

Multiple email domains for the same Exchange serveur
Hello,
Exchange maps DC domain name to SMTP adresses. Let's say DC domain name
is acme.com, then AD user john has a mailing address john@acme.com.
Now, if we merge with another company previously using mail domain named
company.com, we want to create the employes of this company into our AD but
wanted their previous adresses to be still valid and the new one too
(@acme.com).
Do we simply have to add their @company.com addresses into the "Exchange
Addresses" tabs of the user in AD Administration program?
Thank you for your help.

Hello
We migrated to Exchnage 2003 Server 6 months ago. in the Recipient Update
Service (domain) and Recipient Update Service (Enterprise configuration) I
specificed our FSMO DC during the mirgation from Exchnage 2000 Server.
for some reason I received the following error message every hour
"OALGen could not generate full details for some entries in the offline
address list for address list '\Global Address List'. To see which entries
are affected, event logging for the offline address list generator must be
set to at least medium.

I notices under Recipient Update Service (domain) in Exchnage 2003 if I
remove the original FSMO DC in the windows domain controller list and re add
the FSMO DC. Exchnage can not find the FSMO DC. but I can find other DC
within the network.

Mail question
Hi,
I need to change my A record for my mail server and immediately reuse
it for something else. What happens to mail while that A record
propagates? Will it simply keep trying to the same wrong IP or will it
look up the IP each time it tries to send and thus, eventually get the
new IP for the mail server.
Thanks. Tag: .Net framework3.0 compatible Tag: 150865
New Install questions
It has been quite a while since I have done this, so please understand that I
may need to be refreshed on some of the basics.
I need to deploy a new Exchange Server 2003. My email domain name is
different from my local domain name. Should I set up the exchange domain to
match the local domain, for access to Active Directory, and then add the
email domain as one to receive emails from in Exchange?
Do I have to have a front end and back end Exchange server, or can I just
have one? If I can just have one, can I put it behind the firewall?
I will need to allow web access as the primary access to the Exchange
server. What's the best way to do this?
What additional protection will I need to employ?
Thanks,

Information Store Will Not Start
I installed Exchange Server 2003, into an existing 5.5 site, on a second
server, I went though the deployment tools, all worked ok, installed AC
Connector and so one. After completing the installation, I restarted the
server, it took a very long time to shutdown and restart.
I took a look at the services, the information store did not start, I
attempted to start manually, it failed with "1068 Dependence Service DID not
start, I took a look at the other Exchange Services, all started ok except
for System Attendent, which when I start, it says that it started and
stopped, saying the some services stop if they have no work to do.
I tired to start the MTA Stacks, that gave the same error message as the
Information Store.
I tried to install the service pack II I beleive, and recived a "Fatal"
error after starting the update.exe program.

ADC error 8286, but inter-org is enabled...
Trying to achieve co-existence between old Ex 5.5 org (in NT4) and new Exch
2003 org (in 2003 AD). All users migrated to AD, SID's preserved, mailboxes
in 5.5. When using ADC, the 5.5 to 2003 CA works fine, but the 2003 to 5.5 CA
generates error 8286 "will not replicate CN=username because source is a
custom recipient and destination is a mailbox. If this is a problem, consider
making the connection agreement inter-organizational". But it is
inter-organizational....we have selected that option in the agreement. Due to
this, we only get 2 of the 4 values that we need to see on the
ADC-Global-Names attribute (we get the EX5, Forest values but not the NT5,
forest values). Any history on this? Thanks for any input. Tag: .Net framework3.0 compatible Tag: 150857

Delay in recognizing new host of virtual server in cluster
I have an Active/Passive 2-node cluster hosting the Exchange virtual server.
Everything works well on either node until we shift services to the other
node. As soon as the services shift, we lose the ability to ping the virtual
server. After some experimentation (pinging the virtual server from various
places), we determined that a network switch is causing the problem.
If we ping the virtual server from that switch, suddenly communication with
the virtual server resumes. Until then, anything upstream of the switch
can't reach the virtual server.
So... apparently the CAM table in the switch never updates with the new
"next hop" to the virtual server (which is the MAC address of the other
"real" server adapter.
What could cause this? Wouldn't the new host of the VS make enough "noise"
to update this table? Is there any way I can force this, or do we need to
buy a new switch?

SMTP Relay
Hi!
I have a server with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 installed behind a firewall.
The server has only one private IP address (let say: 192.168.0.2) which is
mapped on an external public IP address (to which points the DNS name
mail.mycompany.com).
Everything works fine.
My question is basic: is there a way to be sure that 1) my server is not
being used as an SMTP Relay by the some bad guy in the wild; 2) that it will
never be the case?
Thanks for the leads and informations on this topic.

web services.

password is not syncronized with IIS, but if that was the case, there would
be many more things wrong (Forms Based Auth would not work at all).
Any help fixing this would be appreciated.

However, she is working out of here, she only can access our Exchange server

Exchange SMTP Authentication
Our exchange server got messed up when installing another software product
and now I'm trying to correct things. Version is 5.5.
We can receive e-mail but not send; it gets rejected. The feeling is there
is a problem with SMTP authentication. Our ISP says we need to have the
correct user name (a name they assigned us when the DSL line with static IP
address was set up; I have it) in Exchange so that's sent out (in the
header?) with each e-mail so their system knows where it is coming from.
Where this might be set in Exchange I am not seeing.
Here (with some of the info replaced with ~ characters) is a typical message
we get:

OMA Problems?
Hi,
I'm having problems getting OMA up and running. We've had Exchange & OWA in
place for over a year, running smoothly. At the time, we didn't want OMA,
however, now we've decided to implement it, and so I have followed the
instructions for enabling it via the ESM
At first we were getting the:
Server Error in '/OMA' Application.
Runtime Error
However after changing the <customErrors mode="Off"/> I got a little more
details, which was:
Access to the path "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary
ASP.NET Files\oma\cba174f0\b9f191d5" is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the
current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information
about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path
"C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET
Files\oma\cba174f0\b9f191d5" is denied.
ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider
granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity.
ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or
Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not
impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity
impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically
IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.
To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer,
choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the
appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the
boxes for the desired access.
I've checked the identity that OMA is running under, and its running as
NETWORK SERVICE, so I've given NETWORK SERVICE read/modify access to
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET and restarted
the app pool. Now when I try the page, I get:
A System error has occurred while processing your request. Please try again.
If the problem persists, contact your administrator.
What identity should the OMA ExchangeMobileBrowseApplicationPool be running
as? What security permissions should be on the
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET directory?
Am I missing something else that could be causing this problem? Or is it
strictly an identity/permissions problem?
Any help gratefully received

Direct Push failed.
Hi,
I am having an exchange server 2003 with service pack 2 and ISA 2000 in my
network. I would like to configure my smartphone with windows mobile 5 to be
able to use the direct push feature. My boss is currently using a dopod 577w
smartphone with windows mobile 5 as OS which was bought 2-3 months back. I
know that ISA 2000 and 2004 the ssl publishing is a little bit different.
Correct me if i am wrong but i have notice that the previous person who
configured the ISA 2000 is using one cert for all. If i disable the cert for
microsoft-server-activesync, will i also disable the cert for OWA?
I have tried configurating the ISA 2000 to be able to publish cert for the
microsoft-server-acticesync. When i run the active sync in the phone, when
synchronizing there was a prompt while connecting to the exchange server
which states that the cert is invalid. Do i need to install cert into the
phone? i have tried using the spaddcert program in the phone hoping that i
can install the cert. After i have stored the cert in the mem card, when i
lauch the spaddcert, there was an error message prompt which states, there is
no cert found. There is one thing that i have tested also, which is disabling
the ssl listner for microsoft-server-activesync, and disabling ssl in the IIS
for microsoft-server-activesync too. I tried synchronizing it, and an error
message prompted with the messge, could not authenticate users, no permission
to do so.
Does that means that the phone is not compatible with direct push or my ISA
has problems publishing out the microsoft-server-activesync?? Is there a way
where i can check if my isa publishing is working properly? Really do hope
that there is a work around for this problem for this problem has been
pending for quite sometime in my company.
Thank you in advance. Tag: .Net framework3.0 compatible Tag: 150776
