i've upgraded my windows2000/exchange2000/domain
controller single server to windows2003/exch2003.

After upgrade I am unable to send mail to hotmail.com
mailboxes. I can mail other domains and receive from all
incl. hotmail.

No errors are logged upon sending a test mail.

Using message tracking center, it appears my mail is
delivered to the hotmail.com mailserver. At that moment
dcom logs a 10009 error in the computers systemlog
stating; DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer
mc8-f8.hotmail.com using any of the configured protocols.

Under dcom config there's no UPD or SPX listed, just TCP.

Any insights?

interesting thought :) Good to hear you have not run into other domains with
similar problems. Have you upgraded your server as well? Or was yours a
fresh install?

I do not share your assessment, unless you're a notoir spammer that is :)
Why would your or my mail be considered spam? I use a single recipient,
traceable sender, decent smtp instructions (at least I trust exchange 2003
to do that for me) and have not abused my IP for spamming the world. And
furthermore my exch2000 server mailed just fine, problems arose after
upgrading to 2003 this weekend.

I will continue my search in the direction of the way MS has implemented
their mx record and dns. The fqdn listed in my eventlog
mc7-f6.hotmail.com appears not to be a valid host. Have you looked into
exactly what dcom components might be the cause of the error?

kind regards

Rico

I can email everywhere else just fine. Hotmail, and msn contract Brightmailk
to filter out what they think is spam mail. I have made several attempts to
try and get unblocked, all of which have failed so far. So you are probably
on the same filtered list

I had a similar problem, but mine also involved Yahoo! and a few other
domains. Our problem turned out to be that we didn't have reverse lookup
records on our IP address block. Once we got that resolved, we were fine.

You'll need to get with your provider in order to get that reverse lookup
records added.

resolved! Re: exchange 2003 will not send mail to mail to hotmail.com by Rico

I have likely resolved this issue. Maybe Microsoft want to update the
information on DCOM error 10009. This error (not being able to send mail to
certain domains) can be caused by a non existing NIC still being present in
the registry, not just by the protocols bound to dcom as is currently listed
as only possible cause on technet.

In my case the NIC, that has physically always been present in my computer
was reinstalled during upgrade. The old entries in my registry caused the
errors. I removed them from the following:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapt
ers\

and from parameters\Interfaces

This appears to have resolved the issue
