Hi,

I am running exchange 2000 SP3 and mail is flowing from internal user to
internal user just fine. I have two accounts setup in my outlook 2003
profile one for exchange and another for internet mail which is hosted by
our ISP.

I can send internet mail and outlook passes it on through my ISP account
setup in outlook just fine.

When i receive an internet mail message and try to forward it to an internal
user that is listed in my global catalog list because the message arrived
via my ISP it tries to send to my internal user via SMTP. The message
bounces back with NDR.

Is there a solution to the system recognizing the difference between the two
(exchange internal address versus external internet e-mail address).

Thanks
Carlos

Yes, but it means not using Outlook for both accounts. That's a known issue
from the early days of Outlook and it's a best practice to not configure
both a MAPI (corporate) and internet (your ISP) service in the same profile.
Would be better to use OE and Outlook at the same time or some other
solution.

Al,

Yes i understand but before i upgraded to exchange 2000 I was able to delete
the smtp protocol from the users mail box and the mail would only go to the
exchange account. SMTP is required in exchange 2000.

Any other ideas.

Thanks

OT, but what's the reason you want to maintain this setup rather than taking
advantage of the Exchange server you now have and centralizing all mail,
both internal and Internet, on it? It's faster and more reliable - and
easier to troubleshoot from a single place. You may be able to make your
current setup work, but in my view it is not optimal anyway - you can't use
OWA, etc., and you can't control all inbound/outbound mail from a single
point.
See http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/MF002.html for help hosting your own
mail.

If I do this how will i send mail to internal users that I don't want them
to have the ability to send mail outside the organization.

About 10 users out of 50 have the ability to send email outside of the
company. This is done for a reason.
Can this be done in both cases... send only internal for some users and
internal/external for other users.

If so can you give directions.

Thanks

One last question how will exchange know that the receipient is and exchange
address and not an external address.

Again the problem I am having is when I receive an external message and try
to forward it to an internal exchange user the system trys to send via the
smtp connector and that user does not have an internet email account.

Thanks

It ought to be handled by your virtual SMTP server. How is your connector
set up now? the article I posted is pretty clear....
