Hi, I have to clarify something about the distribution list in
Exchange 5.5, when I migrate the Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 into a
Windows 2003 single domain. Would Exchange 5.5's DL automatically
becomes Windows 2003 distribution list? Does it have anything to do
with the Universal Group?

Thanks in advance,

fshguo

Distribution lists from 5.5 are converted to Active Directory distribution
groups ...
If you want to assign mailbox and folder rights to this distribution groups
I think they must be of type universal too. They are not automatically
converted to universal groups, unless AD is in native 2003 mode.

Right. So if you try to ACL anything using a 5.5 DL and you upgrade to
2003, you have a problem if the domain is not native mode AD (2000 or
higher) since you cannot have a UDG in a non-native mode domain.

Is that what you were after with that question?

Thanks for both of your replies.

The most important thing here is the Exchange 5.5 DL has to work in the
new Windows 2003's DL. I am afraid that there is a need to convert to
native mode (to take advance Universal Group) for a while if it is OK.
Could you please confirm?

What does the Unversal Group do in this case BTW?

Thanks again,
fshguo.

Microsoft requires (strongly recommends anyway) that you have at least one
native mode domain for upgrading from 5.5 to 2K3.
The native mode domain needs to be the one where the DL's are created so
they can be converted by the store to USG's.

USG's are used to ACL the folder when a DL was used before. You would also
have to use a USG vs UDB to ACL a folder later. Gets really fun when it
comes to Outlook folders, but let's not confuse the issue ;)

Here's a nice high-level conversation about it:
http://groups.google.as/groups?hl=en&lr=&threadm=e4Nsw7pADHA.2328%40TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26q%3Dpublic%2Bfolders%2Bpermissions%2Bconversion

Does that help?
