    - WinNT and Exchange 2003 Hello, This is my first post here, please be indulgent I have a very simple and easy question, but I can't find the answer. We would like to upgrade or Exchnage 5.5 to Exchange 2003, this is possible I know it ;) BUT (here is the BUT) We are using Windows NT 4.0 for our PDC and BDC, and we are not thinking to move to Windows 2K or Windows 2K3 soon. Then What I need to know: IS IT POSSIBLE, to have an Exchnage 2000 or better Exchange 2003, without an Active directory struture ?     - Ports Can anyone tell me where to find a list of the ports to open for Exchange 5.5? I have the usual ones, 25, 110, 135. I have set a port in the Registry for DS and IS and opened that.     - Change OWA PORT Hi all Is there a proper procedure to change the default port no ie 80 in OWA exchange 2003 to something else say 7500 I want to do the same on my FE server.     - SMTP Crazyness This morning in my Exchange 2003 Server queues I found arounf 50 Internet Mail SMTP connector, I open one of them and is an email postmaster@mydomain.com is sending to weird addresses, I checked others and the same.     - Migration to Exchange 2003 Dear Sir, We are getting a new machine in the office and it is being requested that I move exchange 2000 from the windows 2000 server I currently have it on to this new machine running Windows 2K3/Exchange 2003.     - Exchange 2003 ForestPrep Problem I am getting the following error when running Forest Prep for E2K3: Setup failed while installing sub-component Microsoft Windows Active Directory Schema update with error code 0xC1037AE6 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again. The error log tells me that it is on schema4.ldf when it failes and the ldif.err displays the following error: Add error on line 210: Unwilling To Perform The server side error is "Schema update failed: An attribute with the same link identifier already exists." An error has occurred in the program. The only thing that I have found on this was KB328661 and it doesn't really fit my error so I'm not sure where to go from here. I have also tried removing the part that is erroring from the schema4.ldf file but it just fails on the next one. My setup is as follows: I have a Windows 2000 Active Directory running in Native Mode, and Exchange 5.5 SP4 with the ADC installed from the Exchange 2000 Setup disk (we were originally going to install E2000). This stuff all works fine. In Exchange 2003 setup I am taking the Coexistance with Mixed Mode Exchange 2000 and Exchange 5.5 since it is the one that fits the best I think. Can anyone help??????     - Moving Mailbox 5.5-->2003 I am trying to migrate from a exchange 5.5 sp4 server to a new exchange 2003 sp1. They are both running on Server 2000 sp4. Everything seems to be working okay, I can open the Exchange admin on both computers and see the other computer. However when I open the Exchange System manager and try to move a mailbox by right clicking on the mail box and selecting Exchange Task>Move Mail Box I get an error. If I click on the link for event 9175 the information provides the following as a possible issue. The System Mailbox object that is created for this mailbox store exists in the Microsoft Exchange System Objects container Which if I open AD Users and Computers I see this is true. my question is whether or not I can move this to another conatiner, if so does it matter which one and is this really my problem.     - Exch2003 - Creating mailboxes for existing user accounts. I'm in the process of moving an existing W2kSBS/exch2000 AD domain, to a W2K3 Standard Server/Exchange2003 AD domain. There is no migration path for this senerio so I have created the new W2K3 domain and installed Exch2003. On the SBS server,I can export a .csv file using CSVDE and edit that to use on the new W2K3 server to import the user accounts. This creates all the user accounts I need with al lthe attributes I want, however Exchange did not create the mailboxex associated with the user accounts. I have a tool to export the old mailboxes and import them to the new mailboxes. I'm just looking for a quicker way to create all the user accounts and mailboxes one at a time.     - OWA on Server without Exchange Can you run OWA on a win2003 box in a DMZ without Exchange? Obviously it would have IIS on it and there would be an Exchange server (2000 on 2000) on the LAN behind the DMZ. If the answer is yes and you do you need to have Exchange on it, can you install Exch 2003 (with no mailboxes on it) on win2003 on a box in a DMZ and provide OWA access for users with mailboxes on an Exch 2000 server on win2000 on the inside LAN?     - Moving Mailboxes Across Sites Hi I have an Exchange 2003 organisation in one site which hosts approximately 15 users. I have another Exchange 2003 organisation in another site which hsot approximately 10 users. The two sites are connected via a 2 way trust relationship. One user in the remote site has a mailbox appromx. 1.8GB in size. I am trying to move that mailbox across to the other site using the Migration Wizard, however I am getting the error "Invalid server specified, or you do not have permissions required to complete the operations". I am sure I am entering the correct information for the Exchange server in the remote site. Could you please tell me what I am doing incorrectly or what I am missing.     - Repost - smtp address equals server fqdn As KB 288175 explains, our HQ E2K3 server won't send to our branch office 5.5 server because 5.5 server's FQDN (pa.abc.com) is same as 5.5 SMTP address (@pa.abc.com). 288175 says to rename server, but we can't, or change E2K3 Recipient Policy to @abc.com and we did, and that works -- pa users' smtp address is not really changed but E2K3 is happy. However, the @pa.abc.com address replicates back into Recipient Policy each night (changes from AD to 5.5 are put into a .csv file, but 5.5 changes are allowed to replicate through) and breaks mail from the HQ E2K3 to the pa 5.5 server again. To solve this, we are willing to change the pa 5.5 Site Addressing to @abc.com if we can also keep pa users' smtp addresses and their reply to addresses as @pa.abc.com, and not affect internet mail from/to them in any way. We do not *actually want to change pa users' smtp address, we just want to solve issue described in KB 288175. btw, The pa 5.5 server is in its own Site and runs its own IMS. Our ISP handles public DNS and the pa.abc.com internet email gets delivered directly to the pa server. Internal mail goes thru Site Connector within private frame relay network, btw. I think if the pa Site Addressing is changed, the pa.abc.com address will not replicate back into E2K3 Recipient Policy and I won't have to manually "fix" it each day. We're fine with that as long as we can guarantee pa users' actual smtp mail address and internet mail from/to them will not be affected. Yes? No? Thanks.     - Free/Busy and Resource Scheduling settings I am running a windows 2003 server test lab with Exchange 2003 backend nad frontend servers. I also have about 4 other exchange 2003 test servers off site that I am hoping to replicate the information to. For some reason I am unable to see the other users free/busy info from workstation to workstation.     - XT: Exchange Setup Help I'm working with Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows 2003 Server (both trial versions) and am trying to get Outlook to work with Exchange. Frankly, I really don't know what I'm doing. First question: does anyone recommend a good book for beginners with setting up exchange and outlook together? Next: I've setup Exchange 2003 (no SP1) and I have Outlook 2000 setup on another computer. The computers are on a interoffice network behind a router/firewall. RPC over HTTP has been setup and configured on the Windows 2003 server. Problem: When I setup my outlook account, I follow all of the directions to setup the email accounts properly through the services tab in the corporate environment setup in Outlook. I enter in the IP address for the Exchange server, in this case 192.168.0.21 and enter in the Mailbox (webmaster), click "Check Name", to which I receive an error message that says "The name could not be resolved. The name could not be matched to a name in the address list." I have setup an account with webmaster as the email name in the Active Directory User List. I know Outlook pretty well, but have never worked with it in the Exchange environment.     - Move RUS to a front end server? I am moving my E2K3 into a cluster and need to relocate the RUS services to a non-clustered box (correct?). I have a front-end OWA server that I was hoping could run the RUS service, however, it doesn't seem to let me choose the Front End server. Is there any way to host the RUS service on a Front End E2K3 OWA server? If not- can I change the front-end server to be a full exchange server in the site, and just not put any mailboxes on it. What would happen when an internet client hits owa on this box and tries to access thier mailbox in the cluster? The cluster is not available to the internet, will the internet accessible exchange server proxy the request to the cluster or will it simply redirect the users browser, at which point, they would not reach their mailbox? The company has multiple POP3 email accounts with a ISP and they want to download all emails from these to Exchange box and then distribute it to the internal Exchange users.Also, they want that a copy of email should be retained at both exchange server and ISP Email Server.     - Existing E 2K & New E 2K3 Enterprise We have an existing Exchange 2000 server in native mode and would like to install an Exchange 2003 Enterprise server in another site on the same domain. When I run the forestprep from the Exchange 2003/Windows 2003 server I keep on getting errors, should the forestprep and domainprep be run from the schema master (a windows 2000 server which isn't either of the 2 exchange servers) or from the Exchange 2000/Windows 2000 server.     - Emails Don't Arrive in Mail Queue Hi, External emails sent by Outlook don't arrive in the Mail Queue on the SBS Server. Emails sent by the Server itself (for example, reports it sends overnight) do arrive in the queue and are successfully sent out over the internet. Internal emails (from one Outlook client to another) send fine. Although all external emails from Outlook clients fail, no NDR is bounced back to the sender. The message just seems to vanish... Exchange MTA service isn't working. Is that the problem? I thought that Exchange MTA was only for communicating with other (older) Exchange servers. Could anyone shed any light on this for me?     - 5.5 to 2003 Ok.. I have a domain that is running in mixed mode because I have an Exchange 5.5 box running on an old Backup Domain Controller from the NT 4 days. I have a new serer (Windows 2003 Server) that I am trying to install Exchange 2003 on. I am to the portion where I am working with the ADC. It is asking me the location of the destination container for the new objects. I assume this would be the root of my domain (I have only one domain)... and I am being prompted "The staging area domain is not in native mode. Group memberships and security cannot be properly managed unless the staging area is a native mode domain" Well the problem is that the NT4 box is the REASON I am not in native mode and the primary reason I am going to Exch 2003... to get to native mode... When we bring on the E2K3 server into the Exchange 5.5 site will the users be able to use the E2k3 OWA to access mail stored on the Exchange 5.5 Information Store ?     - Migrate 5.5 to 2003 - but server is in its own child domain. Hello all - I am a new IT guy for a government agency that has an exchange org that I don't understand. Background: We support 6 different agencies that all have their own domains, yet use our exchange server for email abc@co.xxx.wa.us , however the exchange server is in a child domain of one of the domains. In my short 4 yr career, I have never seen this. Is there any benefit of having the exchange server in it's own domain, much less a child domain? I am having a discussion with my co-worker who has been here for 10 yrs, yet doesn't remember why it was setup this way. I want to build a new server into what will become the root domain, (we'll be consolidating 3 of the 6 domains). What am I missing here?     - Routing Engine not starting, please help ASAP Exchange and Windows 2003 I cannot get the Exchange Routing engine to start up. Upon startup I get an event ID 7023 telling me that the path is not found. Everything else works and starts up just fine, people can open mailboxes, but cannot send/receive emails. I read online that it sounds like the metabase.bin file is corrupted. I uninstalled/reinstalled IIS, reinstalled Exchange 2003, and have reinstalled Exchange 2003 SP1, everything works except that I still cannot get the routing engine to kick back on. Any suggestions!     - RCP over HTTP Hi I read in an article that one of the prerequisites for users to use RPC over HTTP is that all DC and GC that the rpc proxy will use to authenticate the client connection, must be running Windows 2003 Server. Do you know if this is also a requirement when running a hosted exchange setup, that is: The hosted setup is all windows 2003 and exchange 2003, but the client domain is running mixed mode, NT 4.0 and windows 2003.     - Exchange 2003 Sending/receiving emails So here I am with Exchange 2003 setup and ready to go I have my pop account forwarding to my network's Public IP address I have both ports open SMTP/POP3 (25/110) on my firewall and traffic is being NATed to my Exchange's private IP I setup a test email account and tried to send emails The account works. I used my ISP's mail server as a virtual server to relay the SMTP mail. I read that I should use a public DNS server send emails that if I wanted to host my own SMTP, but I am not sure where to get the IP. Would my ISPs public email server's IP work as the designated DNS server? However receiving emails is not working when I ping pop.mysite.com I get the right IP (however it times out, since my firewall doesn't allow pings), but the email is just not being received If I try to send an email to the same account (from another account) from within the network it works fine, but not if I go on the internet for example and try to send an email from yahoo or hotmail Can anyone tell me if I am missing something here?     - RPC over HTTP I read in an article that one of the prerequisites for users to use RPC over HTTP is that all DC and GC that the rpc proxy will use to authenticate the client connection, must be running Windows 2003 Server. Do you know if this is also a requirement when running a hosted exchange setup, that is: The hosted setup is all windows 2003 and exchange 2003, but the client domain is running mixed mode, NT 4.0 and windows 2003.     - upgrading a tricky 5.5 setup Hi: I have problems upgrading our exchange 5.5 (and NT4) setup to exchange 2003 (and windows 2003). The previous installation was: - 2 physically separate LANs. - On each LAN was an NT4 PDC running Exchange 5.5 (and DHCP/WINS etc...). - These two servers were PDC's of separate domains. - The two servers were connected to each other through an additional NIC and a cross-cable. - Both exchange servers were part of one exchange organisation and a site connector enabled mail flow between both servers. - One server (SERVER1) had an incoming (and outgoing) internet connection for all e-mail traffic. - The site connector als enabled the users of SERVER2 to receive e-mail from the internet (by default?). All incoming mail ran through SERVER1. I don't know if outgoing mail used the site connector but it worked. I did fresh installations on both servers of win2k3 and exchange2k3 and I tried to achieve the same functionality. I failed. Is this setup possible with w2k3/e2k3? When I use separate AD forests I can only use an SMTP connector (I think). That's not enough functionality. To use a routing group both servers need to be in the same forest. But can they be on separate domains? Or does one of them need to be a child domain? The first 2k3 domain is named "office.company.local" and the second domain is called "walkin.company.local". An external advisor told me that to make it work I have to reinstall to use the names "office.company.local" and "walkin.company.lan". Is he right?     - Exchange 5.5 EE 2nd server addition to site I added a second exchange server to our existing 5.5 site over the weekend. They are at the same physical site, and same subnet. Both logged in and installed from the Domain\Local admin accounts (NT 4 domain). I moved over a few mailboxes from the old exchange server to the new. All went well during the move. When an email is sent from a user (or the internet) to a user's mailbox on the new server it sits in the old servers MTA queue for the new server. They will buildup until an email from a user on the new server sends to a user on the old. Once this happens, the queue will empty and all email will be delivered. New email for the next couple minutes will also be delivered. I get a bunch (100's) of event 9297's The user /o=STTAS/ou=ALPHA/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn="Old Server" has caused a security violation. Locality table (LTAB) index: 179. Windows NT error code: 0. [BASE IL MAIN BASE 1 237] (14) I have checked the Configuration Container and MTA permissions tab in the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program. They both show domain\admin listed as the service account admin. I'd appreciate any help. RPC ping is good, both servers have static IP's.     - Migration from 5.5 Help I am in the process of setting up an exchange 2003 server migrating from an exchange 5.5. I have exchange 2003 installed and running, as I complete the installation and run the final checks. I do not recieve any errors when I run ADCconfigCheck.     - Exchange 2003 SMTP "bombing" - HELP We have::Exchange 2003 , cu SP1, pe Windows 2003.. Exchange has also IMF (spam filter from Microsoft) and Symantec Mail Security for Exchange 4.5. The SMTP Server is workin OK a while, then it start opening a lot of connections (7-10 /sec) to some hosts, it says EHLO , receive the 250 answer, then my SMTP is answering with QUIT instead of MAIL FROM:<> ...     - Exchange 5.5 and Trusts Relationships We setup exchange 5.5 in one site in out NT domain couple of years ago. We then recently setup a new2k active directory domain and setup trusts between the NT domain and the new w2k domain. We moved all users and all servers including the exchange 5.5 server to the w2k domian. We setup a new exchange service account in our w2k domain and gave it to all the exchange sevices and all the shares and all other permissions. Basically it took over the nt exchange account. When we done this everything ran fine with the w2k account. Now we want to shut down the nt domain and move to native mode. ONce we shut down the nt domain controllers we wget errors in our exchange 5.5 such as " The trust relationship between the primary domain and the trusted domain failed, Microsoft Windows NT." We have now switched back on our NT servers. But would anyone know why we get this error message we have checked all permissions.     - Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 2002 - out of office replies I am currently trying to configure the out of office option on Exchange 5.5 with Outlook 2002 running on the client. On Exchange 5.5 I have unchecked the 2 options 'Disable Out of Office responses to the internet' and 'Disable Automatic Replies to the Internet'. I have restarted the Internet Mail Service.     - Cannot Connet to Exchange Server I am running SBS 2003 with Exchange Server 2003. I have one client computer that I cannot set up Outlook 2003 to connect to Exchange Server. The client computer is a Windows XP Home machine. It can access all other network resourses with no problems. I have other Windows XP Home boxes that I have been able to configure with no problems. This machine also has Norton Internet Security installed, but the personal firewall has been disabled. Is it possible that NIS is still causing the problem? Any other ideas?     - Exchange 2003 SB Hi all, I am unable to resolve the following issue. I have a 2003 SB server running perfectly and it is responsible for handling all email for 8 domains. When an email is send to a non-existing email address, a ndr is send to the sender and Administrator. What I want is that all ndr from 7 domains keep working this way but that the ndr for 1 domain are sent to the sender and to an account OTHER than the Administrator.     - HELP - Ex5.5 to Ex2003 migration problem Hi all, In our organization (say foo.bar.com) we have a recently upgraded our single NT4 domain (FOO) to Active Directory running on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with two domain controllers (server names: DC-1, DC-2). We also have Ex 5.5 on an NT4/SP6 server (MAIL) which was originally a member of the old NT4 domain but currently a member of the AD domain. We wish to migrate the data to a new Exchange Server 2003 (Enterprise Edition) to be installed on a new server (ES-1), also running on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. (NOTE: this is a temporary server, since we wll finally use a cluster to host the production environment.) We have (finally) succeded in using the ExDeploy tool to configure the New Exchange 2003 Server with Co-Existence with Exchange 5.5 up to the point of the actual Exchange Server 2003 setup. This means that we successfully accomplished the following steps: [Phase 1] - Installed necessary services - Run DSScopeScan / OrgNameCheck - Installed Support Tools - Run DCDiag, NetDiag and review the log files for errors [Phase 2] - Run ForestPrep and DomainPrep - designated an existing user (esadmin) for becoming Exchange Full Administrator in the new Exchange Server - Run OrgPrepCheck and review the log files for errors - Installed ADC, created Recipient and Public Folder CAs, - Proceeded with replication, which was completed (shown in Event Viewer, after turning on Minimal logging) [Phase 3] - Run SetupPrep and review the log files for errors Last, we tried to run the ExDeploy tool again for running the Exchange Setup program, after having logged on as FOO\esadmin (Permissions have been set). Unfortunately, the setup program fails when trying to connect to the Exchange 5.5 server after requesting its' name (MAIL). The error message is: " Setup encountered an error while attempting to bind to the Exchange server MAIL: 0x8007052E (1326): Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " NOTES: - "esadmin" is a new account created in the AD domain. It has NO associated mailbox in Exchange 5.5. It is a member of the following Domain groups: Enterprise Admins Schema Admins Domain Admins (=> member of the Local Administrators group on every server) although it should not be necessary, according to docs. - "esadmin" cannot use the Exchange Administrator to view content on Ex5.5 after a local logon, although it is a member of the Domain Admins group which has explicitly been given the same permissions as the Exchange Service account (FOO\ExchangeServer) at the Org/Site/Config levels: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Level / Role / Applied Custom Rights (if non-standard) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Org / Custom / Add Child, Modify User Attributes, Modify Admin Attributes, Delete, Replication, Modify Permissions Site / Service Account Admin / (standard) Config / Service Account Admin / (standard) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The error (at connection time) is: " Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange server computer. At the moment the EXCHSRV\MDBDATA folder contains 1,830 log files E00*****.log This is eating up alot of space on the hard-drive and we need to clear these ASAP. Does not work via SSL from the outside Hello folks My scenario: Two servers Server1: Windows 2003 SBS with Exchange and OWA Private IP: 192.168.10.12 Server 2: Windows 2003 with ISA 2004 One NIC on the private net, IP192.168.10.12 One NIC on the public side (Internet) i.e. 70.80.90.123 DNS configured to point to the public NIC: mail.company.com I have followed the Microsoft Document on how to set up OWA on ISA 2004, including transferring the certificate, establishing av https tunnelling/bridge between then Exchange server and the ISA server My problem: OWA inside the private Net works OK when they access https://companyweb.domain.local/exchange Login in and using the web-access is OK. I do get a warning regarding the certificate authority, but when accepted, thing works. It also works from the console of the ISA server when I use https://mail.company.com/exchange (the mail.company.com is added to the local HOSTS file pointing to 192.168.10.12 as described in the MS document mentioned above) OWA does NOT work from the outside When pointing my browser to https://mail.company.com/exchange, I get the certificate warning stating error on 1. and 3. line, the first a warning about the Certificate authoruty, the third about the name. The second about the certificates date is OK. If I accept the message I get a error message in IE telling: The page cannot be displayed: Technical Information (for support personnel) Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The target principal name is incorrect. (-2146893022) I guess this is an issue with certificates between the ISA bridge and the Exchange OWA, but I cant find the "right spot" where to put the needle :-) Anyone to point me in the right direction here? A shop with NT4 boxes just wants to upgrade their Exchange5.5 to 2000. Is
this possible? I have a feeling it is not since Exchange2000 needs to use
ActiveDirectory. At least one box in the office needs to be 2000 or 2003
server running ActiveDirectory correct?

Yes they will need to implement at least one Windows 2000 active directory
server. So just upgrading the Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 is not
possible.
