A question:
Currently we have the domain A.local with exchange 2000 (windows 2000 domain)

I want to create the domain B.local with exchange 2003 and windows 2003
domain and migrate the old email from server A to server B.

My question is - is this possible, while maintaining the integrity of the
information store. I only have about 35 users so recreating the mailboxes
and accounts for the new server isn't such a big deal but I want to make sure
that I can move the email that is currently in the mail store to the new
store without data loss and hopefully some confidence that I won't be losing
my job come monday ;) . Our current mailstore is about 15 GB in size if it
makes any difference.

Any ideas, KB articles, or other references would be greatly appriciated

- If you're referring to smtp/dns domain, you shouldn't have a problem. This
is assuming your AD structure/domain name isn't changed.
- Add new server to the Exchange Org - installs in first admin group by
default. Move the mailboxes, modify default Recipient Policy to add the new
domain. This tells Exchange it should receive email for that domain and
generates email addresses.

Thank you for your response and I apologize for not being more clear about
the domain in question. We are actually looking at changing our AD domain
due to a company name change and other requirements. Would it be possible to
do a brick level back up of the mail boxes and then restore them to a
different AD domain/Mail server? Are there other options? I understand that
this may take a lot of work but I'd rather do it now while we are at 35 users
and not two or three years from now.

Thanks again for your quick response.

Hi,

You can use exmerge to extract the mailboxes and then import again to the
new server. You can also use the exchange migration wizard to move the
mailboxes to the new server.

Leif

Ps. You know that if you upgrade your domain to a windows server 2003 domain
you can perform a domain rename??
