SetupPrep / PubFoldCheck problem
Hi, all
I am migrating to X2003 from X5.5. On phase 3, SetupPrep gives the following
error in exdeploy.log, about PubFoldCheck:
Error: PubFoldCheck detected an error while performing Public Folder DS/IS
Consistency Adjustment on the Exchange 5.5 server. Check the Windows
Application Event Log on that server for details.
...but I don't have any event in the 5.5 box AppLog, despite it seems I
should have.
I found something online about people who had my same problem, it seems to
be not a new issue, but I didn't find any solution.
Could somebody help me pls?
thx

RUS doesnt work
Hi guys,
Seems like the RUS service is not working.
Let me tell you what i did recently and maybe it was due to this.
This was my previous setup:
DC1 = Original DC Windows 2000
DC2 = Windows 2000
EX1 = Exchange 2000 SP4 Server
I then added a new DC with Windows 2003 so I got the following
DC1 = Windows 2000
DC2 = No longer a DC / Just a Member server
DC3 = Windows 2003 DC
EX1 = Exchange 2000 SP4 Server
I followed the simple steps to upgrade my AD:
1. Move Global Catalog to DC1 using article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313994
2. Using Scenerio 2 in article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314649
a Run ldifde -i -f inetorgpersonprevent.ldf -v -c DC=X "dn path for
forest root domain"
b ADPREP /forestprep
c ADPERP /domainprep
3. DCPROMO DC3
4. Verify DNS and Sysvol are replicating
5. DCPROMO DC2 ( to turn it into a member server )
Is there anything I need to do so that AD 2003 talks to my Exchange 2000
Server? I was wondering if I need to run Exchange ADPREP again?

Enable IMF 2
I have a question regarding IMF 2 :
I can apply IMF manually by checking =E2=80=9CApply Intelligent Message
Filter=E2=80=9D (on Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties =EF=83=A0 Advanc=
ed =EF=83=A0
Edit), but how can I do that using a script?
Currently I=E2=80=99m using the following script to modify the Gateway
Blocking SCL Rating:
=E2=80=A6
Set obj =3D GetObject("LDAP://" & sDN)
obj.msExchUceBlockThreshold =3D 5
=E2=80=A6
Which works fine, but I can=E2=80=99t find the right parameter to modify the
=E2=80=9CApply Intelligent Message Filter=E2=80=9D setting - by the way,
msExchUceEnabled doesn=E2=80=99t do the job.
Thanks for your help in advance

Exchange 2003 Specifications
I am looking for information on how to size Exchange for a new installation.
What I am looking for is data on amount of hardware (processors, ram, etc)
per server for the following:
250000 accounts
17500000 weekly inbound and outbound (combined) messages
I dont see anything in the MS data that indicates what a typical Exchange
server with x hardware will handle along these lines.

Thanks John,
I have looked the article by those links; the second method in
"Securing POP3" is just what I wanted. The problem the Exchange server
does not send the TIMESTEMP ID to client at the connect time. "A
second solution is the optional Authenticated Post Office Protocol
(APOP) command, which requires a timestamp ID to be sent by the server
at connect time in the greeting line. "
Could you tell me is there any way I can get this TIMESTAMP ID from
Exchange server 2003 from its return greeting line?
Thanks,

Exchange 2000 to 2003 Migration
Hello,
I am doing an exchange migration from exchange 2000 to 2003 enterprise
edition. I am actually doing a test migration where i have built an windows
2000 adv server with exchange 2000 server enterprise server and restored my
exchange database onto this offline server. This server has a new domain
(restore.local) and is totally seperate from my network. Then I installed
another server with windows 2003 enterprise and exchange 2003 enterprise
server and configured it to be a domain controller in my origional domain. I
let it sync with the other domain controllers so it had the latest copy of
ad, also it is a global catalog server. Then i connected it to a seperate
network where onely both servers can see each other. I have installed the
latest updates for exchange and windows on both servers. I have also created
hosts enteries in the hosts file in the windows 2003 box so i can ping the
fqdn of the windows 2000 box. Now when i start the migration wizard on the
windows 2003 and get to the point where it asks my for servername and
username and password, i give it the fqdn for server (server.restore.local)
and for user (restore.local/administrator) with the password and it gives me
an error of. "Unable to logon to the server. Please verify the server name,
port, account names, and password.' I have also tried adding the port 389
after the servername (server.restore.local:389) and that didnt work either.
Does anyone have any ideas??? I can also connect to either computers admin
shares using fqdn so i know they can see eachother fine and it proves that
name resolution is working fine.

Exchange 2003 upgrade from Exchange 2000 on New hardware
We are planing to upgrade from exchange 2000 to exchange 2003 on New
hardware and eventually take the exchange 2000 server out of service
(we have just the 1 exchange server). I was just wondering if someone
can confirm if the following is the best way to upgrade and clarify a
couple of points.
Install windows 2003 server and Exchange 2003 on New hardware
( Do I need to run forestprep/domain prep?) ( all our domain
controllers are win 2000)
Add to Exchange Organisation.
Eventually Move all Mailboxes to The exchange 2003 server.
Once Everyone has been moved to exchange 2003 Follow KB307917 to remove
exchange 2000 from the exchange organisation.
It all appears to be too simple so I am sure I have missed out some
vital steps....

Error after install
I just installed e2k3 onto a exchange 5.5 site in order to
move over mailboxes from old exchange 5.5 server. A this
point everything seems to work as far as moving a
mailbox, getting mail in and out, etc. I did run into a
problem during install where I had to follow KB833396
and uninstall exchange 2003 and then reinstall. My old
exchange server had a cc and msmail connectors besides
the IMC. I am not using the other two but I forgot to remove
them before doing the install.
I did receive one error during install when using the ex-
deply tools. During the ConfigDSinteg test the logs gave
me the following messeage:
DN= CN=SMTP (Server -{ID number], CN=connections
CN=Site name,CN=Services, CN=Configuration, DC=test,
dc=abc, dc=com
object-class = top$msexchconnector$mailgateway
the connector contains no home-mdb (homeMdb)
**The GUID in the name of this object does not reference
a valid MDB. This object is most likely an orphaned object.
The connector contains no home-mta (homeMta)
I did not create another smtp connector after the install since
the errors have to do with SMTP. Mail is flowing in/out O.K.
thru the IMC connector of the exchange 5.5. box. My guess
is that the error is related to the failed first install the fact
that I had a cc and msmail connector on exchange 5.5. Is this
the case? I can find the object in AD with ADSIedit so would it
be safe to delete it?
Your input is appreciated.

MS Exchange 5.5 -> 2003 Disaster.. Please HELP!!!!
Hello All-
I have recently been contacted by an old friend to try and help a
client of his. The situation is as follows. They seem to have migrated
their single Exchange 5.5 server to Exch 2003, however they never
replicated the schedule+ or free/busy data. Whats more, they actually
decommisioned the 5.5 server and turned it down. The server is (and
possibly was) on a diffferent domain than the primary domain and the
5.5 box is also in a different location (physical) than the current
2003 Exchange server. I am looking for any help in order to help these
guys come up with a strategy to recover as much as possible and migrate
it into their Exch 2003 environment. If anybody out there could point
me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Notes to Exchange Migration - mail files not Syncing? Notes Connector
We are migrating from Notes to Exchange. First off, i should tell you
that i was not involved in the Notes Implementation years ago. Now i am
implementing a new instance of Exchange 2003, and i have never had any
experience with Exchange in the past. Ok, now that thats out of the way.
I am using the Newest Connector from MS, and I have everything set up,
and Exchange is sending mail properly to outside addresses. But the
Directories are not syncing as they should.
I have 2 mailboxes: mail1.box, and Mail2.box ((of course the original
mail.box file still exists)) Which mailbox should i point the connector
to? i have tried it a few different ways, but i cannot get the files to
sync? When i try to send an email out of Outlook, it goes only to the
persons outlook account?
When i send an email from an outside account. It is only received in the
notes account, and not sent to the Outlook...
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Outlook Attachments
Hi all
We are running a small system, W2K3, Exchange Server 2003 all service
packs and updates. Outlook 2002 on all workstations.
Our problem is that something. Exchange or Outlook or ? seems to be
removing some of our attachments. The reported ext's are. ZIP. PDF I
have not tested through all the common ext's as I know these are being
removed and resolving this hopefully would resolve the rest if they are
a problem.
I have looked though the normal tabs in Outlook to see if I can find a
reason for this nothing seems to jump out as obvious.
Is there a configuration setting in exchange that will perform this
removal of certain ext's to internet addresses? We are able to send to
internal addresses OK.
I have visited one customer that has complained about no receiving the
attachments of both .Zip and .PDF. She was usung a simple ADSL
connection, WINXP Home, Outlook Express and Norton Internet Security
2005. I configured OE not to hide potentially dangerous attachments but
that has not helped, so I suspect our setup.
This can really have an impact on the business as we are planning on
switching to sending invoices by .pdf over email where possible.
Any ideas would be very helpfull at this point, thanks in advance for
taking the time to read this.

Errors installing Exchange Management Tools on Win XP SP2 machine
Awhile back my exchange management tools stopped working on my desktop
machine at work. So since I'm working remotely right now, I had my co-worker
wipe and re-install the OS on my work system so I could re-install the
Exchange 2003 management tools. Because somehow they would not uninstall and
showed twice in the add/remove programs panel.
However, now that I have a fresh install I can not get the Exchange 2003
Management tools to install at all. It gets through copying files and starts
to create the registry entries then I get an error message 0xC103798A and the
message states that an error occured during installation of the Exchange
Management Subcomponent.
Now I am stuck with Exchange listed in add/remove programs again but can not
uninstall or re-install the program. I keep getting the same error.
How can I fix this issue?

Using OWA on the internet (how?) (Take 2)
We've had tons of problems with getting Exchange 2003 to run properly

I have set up 2 mailboxes and tested them with Outlook 2003 and
OWA...inside the LAN.
What I need to do now is make OWA work over the internet. How can I do
that securely?
We have the following set up:
1) Hardware firewall
2) Windows Server 2003 x64 DC
3) Windows Server 2003 Standard with Exchange 2003 (member server)
4) 2 Windows XP Pro PC's which have been able to connect to the
Exchange 2003 server and run Outlook 2003 and OWA inside the LAN.

Two domains, one mailrelay, what's the best way to do it.

multiple "schema-root" listed in system folders in Exchange System Manager
and to delete the old version. I looked and I do have 2 entries. I am not
ready to migrate mailboxes or public folders to the new server yet and do
not want to delete one of the "schema-root" if it will cause issues with the
existing Exchange 2000 server. Can someone tell me if it is safe to delete
the old one and that it won't mess up my existing 2000 environment?

Reply address issue with NW GW to Exchange 2003 Migration.
I have been transitioned into a project for Migration Novell GroupWise to
Exchange 2003. The gentleman before me was having an issue with reply to
addressing. Here is his message to me indicating the issue:
I have dirsynch and email flowing between GW and Exchange, both directions.
Right now, since there are no "production" users on Exchange, all external
email from the Internet is sent to the GW server. I am able to get mail to
flow thru to my test Exchange user, but the reply address is messed up
(trinitycos.com.jclark instead of jclark@trinitycos.com).
We need to get this resolved before moving forward with the Migration. Is
it possible that the connector is misconfigured. Also, is it possible that
we could have Exchange 2003 act as the Internet SMTP Server and forward
messages to Groupswise?
Any help would be appreciated.

Best Practice when using EX this way?
I have Ex Server 2003 running on a small office LAN, single domain, AD, dual

solution. Two principals of the company handles email outside the

are there any setup or configuration guidelines for using EX this way? Any
pointers would be appreciated.
btw, the setup works fine, with a few minor idiosyncracies. It would be way
too much of an administrative burden for us to host our own public mail

Trial Exchange 2003 activation
Hi,
I have got a Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000 server, and I expected same
porblems with this server and we have added another Windows 2003 Enterprise
server (activated version) and Exchange 2003 (Trial version).
Now I bought the Exchange 2003 license and I want to restore my mailbox and
data and I hope that I'll be able to activate the trial without reinstalling
Exchange 2003 or affecting my mailbox and data.
have you any solution or fix for this problem??

Looping Problem ...
I have the following configuration, I really don't know if it is correct. I
have three servers running Exchange 2003 SP2, all of them with an independent
Mailbox Store and Public Folders that replicate among them.
Recipient Policies assign email addresses for two of the servers of
'domain1.com', for the other server it is 'other.domain1.com'. When I send
emails to the internet I have no issues. However, when I try to send an email
from 'other.domain1.com' to a 'domain1.com' mailbox (or viceversa), I receive
an NDR 5.3.5 error almost instantly. Routing is configured as it came out
of the box, but I did configure on the 'domain1.com' servers to be the
BridgeHead Server and to be routing Master.
Any Clues to a solution will definitely make me very happy!!!!

Installing Exchange 2003 in Win 2000 environment
I have read many upgrade issues but none quite like what I want to do. If
there is any article out there regarding my issue please let me know.
We have a 2k environment with Ex 2k, I would like to install Ex2k3 on a new
machine with win2k3 on it. The reason I want to do that as oppose to upgrade
the current Ex is that the machine the current install is on is faulty and I
am tired trying to fix it.
What is the best way to go about doing this, remember I have to copy all the
data over from the EX2k to the new Ex2k3.
Thanks

OMA Setup question
I currently have OWA set up to run on SSL. I have no problems with it. I am
now trying to set up OMA to do the same thing. I have set OMA to use SSL and
128 bit encryption. When I attempt to hit the site, I get the following
message .... A System error has occurred while processing your request.
Please try again. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
TIA,

Isinteg Warnings
Exchange 2003 SP2 / Windows 2003 SP1
This may be loaded question, but I'm just curious. Why does the database,
over time, accumulate warnings? Is this just the nature of the database?
For example: I moved many mailboxes to another database several months ago.
After the defrag, I did the isinteg -fix until all entries were 0.
Recently, I restored that database from a current backup to a lab and did an
isinteg w/o the -fix switch. The 30 GB database showed 14,965 warnings
(mostly in test 7, Folder). Running isinteg -fix twice brings everything
back to 0.
If everything seems to be running smoothly on the server, why the
accumulation of warnings overtime? Tag: how can I copy exchange 2000 Tag: 142146

Strange Ex 2k3 Organisation name
To all who can help.
After sucessful installation of Exhnage 2003 on windows 2003 server. All
went well, however, the Organisation name i gave appears as a string of
charachters and letters, nothing remotely like what i would expect! also
looking at services none of the MS ex services are there. Like IS etc
services. Is this a sign of very failed installtion or i am loosing my
mind?!
If anyone has seen this quirky status and can shed light on it, will be very
greatful indeed. My search on web and ms site reveal zer0 info. Much
thanks to all

GAL problem after server migration
We just installed a new Exchange server 2003 next to our old exchange 2000
machine. I replicated all public and sys folders and I then moved all
mailboxes to the new server. When I dissconnect the old exchange server,
Outlook on all client machines stop responding. If I reconnect the old
server to the network all works well (even though I already uninstalled
exchange from the old server) It seems that Outlook is looking for the old
server as the global address list server. How do I remedi this. All help
would be appreciated.
