Is there a white paper or any how to information on getting this done?

Exchange 2003 SMTP?
Why?
If you HAVE to put something in the DMZ then it should be a Windows
2003 SMTP server, not one with Exchange installed on it.
http://www.petri.co.il/configure_iis_to_be_a_smart_host_for_exchange.htm
is what you would want to follow.
Putting Exchange 2003 on the box and opening your firewall (swiss
cheese mode) isn't today's best idea.

Putting Exchange in the DMZ is going to turn your firewall to Swiss cheese.
Better would be to put a standard Windows 2003 SMTP server out there.

Thank you Mark, that is why I asked, my boss is insistant that we build a
SMTP gateway. I will go over the link you posted then make my case against
it. Thanks again.

That's cool and not a bad idea at all.
Just keep in mind Exchange is the wrong tool for the job. Windows built in
SMTP server will do the same thing for you without the headaches and
security issues.

You can even consider a 3rd party product that does anti spam or anti virus
or an appliance. Trend, Symantec, Barracuda, whatever.
