Do I still need WINS?

Hi,

For 2003 the answer is yes, see

Microsoft recommends leaving WINS installed for Exchange 2000 and 2003. As
for Exchange 2007, it does not require it.

Excuse me for jumping in, but why is it recommended that WINS be used with
Exchange 2003? About two years ago we consolidated/migrated from 8 NT
domains with Exchange 5.5, to a single Win 2003/Exchange 2003 (about 5000
users). We have been running straight DNS with no WINS since the
migration. Things seem to be working OK. What does WINS give you that DNS
can't provide?

Some more information. Our system is a single forest, single domain. The
Exchange servers (two MB, one OWA, and a recovery server) are all the same
subnet as the DC and GC server. The users are in all kinds of different
subnets, but we're all one "site". I did some searching, and understand you
would have Netbios name issues if your servers were scattered or subnetted
around, but it also mentions that you need WINS for Outlook 2002 and below.
We have about 5000 Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, and a few 2007 users, all
scattered over a bunch of subnets, and it seems to be work.

We had all kinds of problems with WINS before migrating (replication
problems, corrupted lists). When we went to Win 2003, turning off WINS was
a major sigh of relief.
