I am currently running ubuntu server + Vmware server, I am about to
install exchange 2007 but I don't know how much resources it will
use.

We plan on having 400 users

What kind of impact will it have on the disks with I/O issues.

On another virtual machine we will have SQL server with 10 concurrent
users on at any given time.

The machine is a poweredge 2900 with dual 2.4 xeons 24GB of ram

we currently have 8 10,000 RPM SATA drives in a RAID 10

There is also 2 other machines running on it, one is a file server and
one is an AD controller

Simple question: Can we run Exchange 2007 comfortably without noticing
any performance issues? (it will have 4GB of ram)

Exchange 2007 is not supported in any virtualisation whatsoever. Your
planning to host 400 users mean you will have at least two boxes, one
for mailboxes and another for the CAS/HT roles, possibly even three if
you split those roles out.

If you ask me, and you did when you asked here, the eight disks are
grossly insufficient for running 400 users worth of email, let alone
400 users and the transaction logs, let alone planning on another
guest for SQL.

Whilst I'm all in favour of using VMware for Exchange 2007 it has to
be your call in terms of how far down an unsupported path you want to
do. Whilst the box itself is more than up to the job of hosting a lot
of guests and even mailbox servers I'm not sure you're going to find a
whole lot of support for putting mailboxes on a guest.

Well currently we have a self contained exchange 2003 setup with it's
own AD controller in all virtual without any problems at all. Do you
think there is a big enough difference that we shouldn't do it with
exchange 2007?

I just want to know if it will work, or if we need to get better
hardware or something like that.

I think what Mark said was right on the money. You are going to tear those
disks up with 400 users hammering on them and that's not even with the SQL
talking.

Yeah. It'll work.
It'll suck.
It'll suck BIG.
But, it'll work.

And it won't be supported so don't call Microsoft or else they'll make you
move it to a standalone server before talking to you.
