Hi

My Boss wants to monitor some users mailboxes in Exchange 2003 and Outlook
2000 and 2003...

How do I set it up so he can monitor and look into users mailboxes

Thanks

Well, first of all I'd make sure that your users are aware that he's doing
this or you could end up on shaky legal ground.

You can set permissions on mailboxes in ADUC by clicking on the Mailbox
Rights button on the Exchange Advanced tab for the user. In there, you can
add your bosses account with whatever permissions he needs. Once you've done
this, just choose File > Open > Other User's Folder from Outlook on your
bosses PC and pick the user whose Inbox he wants to see. Or, you can go into
your bosses Exchange account settings, select 'More Settings' and add the
user he wants to monitor into the additional mailboxes list on the Advanced
property page. This way the user's entire mailbox is available in his
Outlook folder list.

I'm not sure this would be a legal issue (they are the company's
computers, used for company work, and (I keep saying this) there can
be no expectation of privacy on a company computer!

It does present an ethical issue or two. I'm about 95% sure it
violates the ACM charter, if you are a member (and if that is
important to you).

More importantly say someone gets a repremand or such, will they
and/or other staff members blaim you, cause you problems etc.

I'd say, get it in writing. If the boss won't write it down you have a
judgement call to make, good luck. When asking for writing, just say
you need to cover your ass if something ever comes up in a court or
creates legal issues.

First, have him request this in writing and be approved by his manager.
This is illegal in at least one US state.

Create groups in AD for each storage group. Example: "Read email
Storage Group1", or "Read email Executive Group", etc.

Use the Delegation Wizard to give rights for the group to read email
for that storage group.

Add appropriate managers to the groups.

Get it in writing anyway. With the reason. You are very shaky legal
ground. Students are not employees and because they can use e-mail for
more than just school-related correnpondence, they have some expectation
of privacy. And the fact that he wants to monitor targeted mailboxes as
opposed to all, could be construed as harrasment. If possible get written
documentation that these students are suspected of doing something that
contravenes the school policy.
