An additional Exchange server was accidentally installed while trying to
install the client tools. An attempt was made to remove this server by
deleting it from the servers tree in Exchange System Manager.

Now any attempt at a control panel uninstall fails with this message

An Invalid ADSI Pathname Was Passed 80005000

I suspect that the uninstall is trying to remove the adsi entry that was
already removed.

Anyone know the cure? NB I just want to remove exchange from this server, I
don't want to remove it from the whole organisation which is what some
technotes suggest I do.

You need to completely remove Exchange 2003 from Active Directory and reset
the Heuristics attribute on the Microsoft Exchange container.

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Active Directory Sites and Services.
2. Turn on the Show Services node on the View menu.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Click Microsoft Exchange.
5. Under Microsoft Exchange you will see Active Directory Connections and
the Exchange Organization Object. Right-click your Microsoft Exchange
Organization object, and then click Delete.
6. Reset the Heuristics attribute on the Microsoft Exchange container. To do
so, use

ADSI Edit from the Windows 2003 Support Tools:

a. Open ADSI Edit.
b. Expand to the following location under the Configuration container:
CN=Configuration; CN=Services; select CN=Microsoft Exchange
c. Right-click CN=Microsoft Exchange, and then click Properties.
d. On the Attributes tab, under Select which properties to view, click Both.
e. From the Select what property to view pull-down menu, select Heuristics.
f. If the value is set to 2, ForestPrep has been run.
g. To reset the Heuristics property, click Clear, and then click Apply. The
Value(s) field will have a value of not set.

7. Run Exchange 2003 Setup with the /forestprep switch again.

To try removing manually you con try

support.microsoft.com/kb/833396
support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q273478

one of them is to remove exchange manually from your computer and the other
is to remove exchange from active directory.

Hello, and thanks for your reply. Yes I have seen this remedy proposed, but I
very definitely do not want to delete the exchange organisation and then
re-run forestprep. It seems to me that the danger of stopping the whole show
is far too high from this drastic step.

What I am trying to do is to remove one server, which has no mailboxes on
it, nor public folders, and which was only installed by accident.

Hello and thanks for your reply.

Yes I have read this technote but I am trying to avoid the drastic step of
deleting the whole exchange organisation.

Dear Bob,

DO NOT delete the exchange organization, just delete the Exchange Object
from under the organization, you need to remove the exchagne which was
installed by mistake , right ? so only delete this exchange object , agian
DO NOT DELETE THE EXCHANGE ORGANIZATION.

if you delete the Organization and you have an exchange server online and
live , then you are in a trouble.

only deleted the exchange server name which was installed wrongly, agian do
not delete the exchange organization from the active directoy.

Dear Rob,

i am very sorry, please ignore the link that i posted later on how to
completey remove exchange server 2003 from active directory, this article
will removes exchange organization, i hope you didn't aplied it on your
domain.

simply if you installed a new exchange server under an existing exchange
organization which has already exchange servers running, the exchange server
will act as additional exchange server under this exchagne organization. if
you didn't create any mailbox under this server, simple run the setup again,
and choose to remove exchange server from this server and let the setup
completes successfully, then that server will be removed automatically from
under exchange organization. just wait for the replication, or you can force
the replication between your current DC's.

again, please ignore the first article, i hope you didn't applied it yet.
please inform me if you applied the steps mentioned on that article.

waiting for your confirmation.

Hello,

No I had already seen this notice and didn't apply the instructions,
because, as I said, it seemed a bit drastic.

I am trying to use Exchange Setup with the remove option to get rid of the
offending server but that's where I keep coming up against the error:-

An Invalid ADSI Pathname Was Passed 80005000

Because this server was manually deleted from Exchange System Manager I
suspect that the uninstall software is objecting because it can't delete an
ADSI entry that's already been deleted. A bit like the famous delete files
error message.

Does anyone know a way round this - maybe I have to use ADSI edit to put
back the entry so the uninstall can remove it?

Best Regards
Bob
