Hi,
We're in the process of setting up a new Exch. 2007 server for our College.
At first I was considering of using the Edge Transport server because I
thought it was required. We are signing up with Message Labs to filter our
mail for spam and anti-virus ( incoming and outgoing ). We have also secured
the connection only allowing communication to and from Message Labs to our
e-mail server.

It seems to me that having both the Message Labs filter and the Edge
Transport a bit redundant and more cumbersome to manage. Is this an
acceptable configuration not to use the Edge Transport hub in this case?

Sure. The Edge role is not required.

Most certainly you can use a third party filter if you choose w/o Edge
Server.
