Hi

I currently do not have a mail server although I have
been testing a few for some time.

I recently acquired microsoft exchange 2003 Enterprise
edition through the partner action pack subscription and
I have a few questions I need help with.

This is my first server, and when installing active
directory, I made the domain .local at the end. I am not
a expert and I did not realise what this meant. I still
dont fully know! I was wondering now I own a domain will
exchange work fully? Also I have a new 10MB/s leased line
and I really want to start running my own commercial
email server. I was wondering is exchange up to doing
this?

also I am sure the answer is no, but is it possible to
unassosciate exchange from active directory? because upon
testing other mail servers I have to say this was one
feature I do not really like about exchange, for each
account I want to set up I have to create a user account
on the system. I realise that this is more secure e.t.c.
but in the long run it is annoying having hundreds of
extra user accounts on the pc.

I just have a few more questions! I was wondering if I
was to install exchange I remember last time I had to run
all sorts of things where it "expands" the active
directory, I was wondering if i choose to install it
again, will I be able to uninstall it successfully and
install another mail server at a later date?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Yes - your AD domain name doesn't have to be the same as your registered
Internet mail domain. All Exchange will care about is what it has in the
recipient policy (make your real domain the default/reply address).

Not sure what you mean by "commercial" but if you mean you want to host your
own mail, see http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/MF002.html (it's written
for 2000 but is valid for 2003 too)

Not possible to disassociate it from AD.

You should be able to just uninstall Exchange and install whatever you like
(assuming it's compatible with your OS). You'll need to make sure all the
mailboxes are gone before uninstalling.

Note - posting your valid e-mail address in a newsgroup post, or in your
news account settings, is a surefire way to get spam and SWEN and other
viruses sent to you....see http://www.mailmsg.com/SPAM_munging.htm for help
in the future, but note that now that your address is out there, there's not
much you can do other than changing your address.

well how about putting dot there! but seriously I do not
receive spam, I have a loads of filters set up. but
thanks for your help anyway.

I just wanted to say thank you loads, but when i said
commercial I meant set up both a premium and free mail
service like hotmail.com and mail.com where I could give
people a email account for free with a banner or two and
reduced storage, and I could also give people a pay
account for say 20 megs, and no banners.

Anyway, thanks for your help.
