We're a Ex2k3 SP2 in Win2k3 SP1 shop.

We want certain users to be able to send e-mails where the FROM address is
the e-mail address of a distribution group in AD.

I gave the user Send As rights in the security tab and even restarted the
information stores. Before I did this Outlook would pop up saying you don't
have permission to send as this person. Now once I've restarted the stores,
it says "You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For
assistance, contact your system administrator."

How do I fix this? I don't like having to create mailbox upon mailbox
because that costs us in licensing.

Thanks!

- Try deleting the DL and recreating. "Send As" permissions should be
sufficient, Store does not need to be restarted for this.
- Mailboxes don't increase your licensing cost. Exchange is licensed per
user or device.

Contact your vendor for clarifications on licensing.

This sounds vaugely familiar. Is it a distribution group or a security
group?
What happens when you convert the distribution group to a universal security
group and then try to give other security principles send as permissions? A
distribution group is not a security principle, a security group is.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try.

As for the licensing, that's Microsoft's take. But for reporting tools,
antivirus, etc. it's based on active mailboxes. If we go by the honor code,
then we'd be charged for all the generic accounts we have.

I tried it and had no luck. I deleted old one and recreated and then tries
with new one from scratch. Here's my steps:

Create New Group:
Distribution + Universal

Give Exchange Alias.

Go to properties. Set to hide from GAL and send OOA's to original sender.

Go to Security tab. Add User.

Select advanced.

Highlight user and choose Edit.

Grant Send-As on This Object only.

Click OK a bunch of times.

Go to Outlook and create new message to myself. Set FROM address to be
e-mail address of new group. Send.

Hit Send/Receive and I get System admin bounceback saying I don't have
permission to send to this recipient.

"Create New Group:
Distribution + Universal"

A distribution group is not a security principal. Try converting it to a USG
first.

You can assign Send As permissions on a Distribution Group to a user.

Converting it to a Security Group didn't help.

What's weird is that it says " you don't have permission to send to that
user ". This seems to mean that the distribution group/security group isn't
allowed to send to anyone. I've tried sending to different people with the
FROM address being that of the group and it says same thing. No error code
though.
