Background - I have an Exch2000 SP4 server I need to rebuild as it usually
BSODs on me when I reboot. So, after I run chkdsk and it will then reboot,
but folder/file permissions are damaged (Administrators-Full; this folder
only and SYSTEM-Full; this folder only) get applied to every folder on the C:
drive

I'm not really interested in repairing this install; I'd rather just rebuild
the server.

My DBs and TXN logs are on separate SAN volumes.

Is there a way to bring up a temp server and attach the DBs and TXN logs to
it while I rebuild my primary exchange server?

You can build the "temporary" server with the same name as the original
server, and by setting the LUNs to the same drive letter settings as the old
server. Then you run Exchange setup with the /disasterrecovery switch,
which reinstalls Exchange based on the settings already in Active Directory.
When you rebuild the old server, you can shut down the "temporary" server
and repeat the process.

Consult the Exchange Disaster Recovery document for more information:

Thanks, Ed

I started reading this guide. You've helped confirm I'm on the right track.
Are you aware of any special considerations I might need to know since my
info stores and txn logs are on a SAN?

No, the SAN should make things easier for you. I'd take a good backup of
the databases and logs before each Exchange install, though.
