    - Exchange 2007 Migration - Confusion with domain/forest functional Hello, I am currently migrating our Exchange 2000 server to Exchange 2007. Our organization is a simple single-forest, single-domain network environment. We currently have one Windows 2000 Server and two Windows Server 2003 Sp2 Std Edition machines. We have just built a new server with Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 edition, and we plan to migrate Exchange to this machine. All four of these machines are domain controllers. I thought I understood Windows domain and forest functional levels, but now I am finding myself confused. The book I=92m using to help with the Exchange upgrade (Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unleashed) has said in different places that: Exchange 2007 requires a domain functional level of at least Windows 2000 native. Exchange 2007 requires a forest functional level of at least Windows 2003. Specifically, it says: =93To install Exchange Server 2007, the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain functional level must be Windows 2000 Server Native or higher for all domains in the Active Directory forest where Exchange will exist.=94 (p. 182) Then, later, it says, "At a minimum, in planning a migration to Exchange 2007, the organization needs to ensure that the server running Exchange 2007 is running an x64-bit version of Windows 2003 SP1 or higher, and that the forest functional level is set to Windows 2003." (p. 495) I don=92t see how this can be for both cases=85 by definition, a forest functional level requires all domain controllers to be at least Windows Server 2003. If this is true, why would the book say that you can have a Windows 2000 native domain functional level, which would allow for Windows 2000 servers to be domain controllers? Or am I somehow misunderstanding the difference between forests and domains in AD? In short, I need to know for our Exchange migration if I need to upgrade our Windows 2000 Server to Server 2003 so that I can promote our forest functional level to Windows 2003.     - Remove second Hub Transport Rols Hi, I have an environment where I have a legacy exchange 2003 environment where I have install the new E2K7 into. I have multiple sites so I have installed a second Hub Transport Server at another site and it is configured as a member (not master) of the two routing group connectors created in Exchange 2003. I want to uninstall this second hub transport Server however it wont let me uninstall the role as it says that this computer is a member of two routing group connectors. I DO NOT want to delete the Routing Group Connectors as I still need them. How do I remove this second Hub Transport Server from the routing Group connectors?     - mail flow setting I am running exchange server 2003 on a server. On a different server I am installing exchange 2007. Eventually I will migrate the mailboxes to the new exchange. My question is during the install I'm being asked about the Mail Flow Settings. do I need to browse to the server that is running exchange 2003 or do I ignore this and just select next?     - Group Schedules not replicated to Exchange 2007 public folders Hi, we are in the phase of migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. We noticed, that group schedules, which were created on public folders on Exchange 2003 are not replicated to the public folders of Exchange 2007, although the server holds a replica of that folders. If a user on Exchange 2003 selects this public fodler, in Outlook clicks Actions and selecting View Group Schedules the schedules are there.     - OWA: 'Posting a Login' From Outside Script? I am just wondering if anyone here can help with a problem that we have here. We have a PHP based website/application that has a user login that is connected to our AD setup. This works fine. Obviously their usernames and passwords are common to their exchange mailbox ones. What we would like to do is just have the one common login for our web application. I can obviously get their username/password in login to the site, encrypt and store them in a session - then using something like Curl post them to the OWA login script. I have had a look at the OWA login screen, and noticed it posts to "/ exchweb/bin/auth/owaauth.dll". I will be buggered if I can get this to work. I have little experience with Exchange - is there some security within OWA to stop this 'proxy' login working from outside it's site/ area (webmail.domain.tld)? Just to recap what I am trying to do: 1) User logs in to PHP based application 2) Username/password stored in session 3) User triggers a script that uses Curl to proxy login to OWA from stored credentials.     - Help before installing Exchange 2003 and migrating from SmarterMai I am planning on installing Exchange Server 2003 for my company this coming week. We currently are using SmarterMail 3 and I am looking suggestions on how to make the install and migration go as smoothly as possible. I have setup a test Exchange Server 2003 on our internal office server to familiarize myself with the process for the install and migration, but that can only help so much. I am planning on migrating all the user's folders and mail through IMAP. As far as I could tell there is no simple way to migrate the user's contacts for users using the webmail interface. SmarterMail allows you to export your contacts to a zip file containing the .vcf vCards. In OWA, I could not see any way to import cotacts, either I missed the option or its not there. So what options would I have to import the contacts of the users who are using webmail? For those using Outlook I imagine it should be pretty simple to import all the info from their current Outlook account to their new Exhange account. I am mainly worried about getting the new MX record set right and ensuring a smooth transition. I am planning on doing the install on the weekend to allow for time to handle any unforseen problems.     - new exchange admin over his head Normally we have another guy doing exchange, so my experience with setup of an exchange environment is very little. We have an exchange 2003 and 2007 server(I'm on the exch 2007) as it's our test environment. Both sit behind a checkpoint firewall. We have OWA running on both servers, and access is restricted through our Cisco 3000 WebVPN. We wont punch holes in the firewall to this particular exchange server because it sits outside of our DMZ. I believe the "proper" way to set this up would be to have your exch server in the internal network, and have a separate OWA server in the DMZ with holes punched into the firewall for access to it. I'd then suspect you'd use this same OWA server for mobile device connectivitiy(iPhone etc...). I'm going to attempt to deploy an exchange 2007 server with the edge role and see if that gives me what I need, but I have to admit I'm a fair bit confused as to the direction I should be heading.     - Cluster Hardware Requirements Sorry to post this, I have researched this a lot and connot find any definitive answers. We are running an exchange 2007 Server-Typical installation. We recently witnessed a long email outage for another business, so now we are exploring cluster options. For CCR, we would like to know hardware requirements. Out current exchange server is an HP DL380, SAS drives, 4GB RAM. If we wanted to move to a CCR config-2 servers for mailbox cluster, two servers for NLB for remaining Exchange Functions, do we need SAN,FIBRE Channel or iSCSI drives?     - Ex2k3 FE, Ex2k7 BE My current setup is as follows: Ex2k3SP2 FE server on W2k3SP2, Ex2k3SP2 BE server on W2k3SP2 I would like to setup an Ex2k7SP1 server on W2k8 as a BE server that would run along side my Ex2k3SP2 BE and still use my Ex2k3SP2 FE server.     - Troubles removing Exchange 2003 We just recently upgraded to Exchange 2007. I have two Exchange 2003 servers. One is our BES. I want to remove both Exchange 2003 servers. When I try to uninstall Exchange from the non-BES server, I receive the following error message: "Setup failed while installing sub-component Exchange ActiveSync with error code 0x80005000 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed setup again." I click Cancel then get the following message: "Setup failed while installing sub-component Microsoft Exchange OMA Browse with error code 0x80005000 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed setup again." I click Cancel then the uninstall fails with the following error: "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services An invalid ADSI pathname was passed. Facility: LDAP Provider ID no: 80005000 Microsoft Exchange Setup" Anyway, if anyone knows how to get past this, I'd greatly appreciate it.     - Viewing members of Exchange 2007 dynamic (query-based) distribution We're running Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2003 clients and use the Ex2003 query based distribution groups extensively. In order to answer the frequent requests from employees, we created a web page on our intranet (running PHP) that does an LDAP query on the fly and displays the current members of any particular query based distribution group. Is is possible in an Exchange 2007/Outlook 2007 environment for someone to view the members of a dynamic distribution group from within their mail client? It is possible to right click on the group name and expand the DL before sending a message? For peace of mind, many people would like to verify who the recipients are before they actually send a message and that is very difficult in an Exchange 2003/Outlook2003 environment. Thanks. This error massage apears when i try to access First Storage Group on Exchange 2003 Standard server on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.     - Extending the GAL to include custom Names for contacts. Hello. I run exchange 2007 / SP1 on win08 64 and was wondering is it possible to populate the GAL with custom names beyond the default all users, etc etc with custom names Like Clients List, Customers etc etc. Any pointers on a way to acomplish this would be helpful.     - Problem Setting Up Exchange 2007 with Multiple Domains We recently switched to Outlook 2007, and when connecting to our Exchange 2007 server when a user enters their info i.e. server: mail.somedomain.com and user: "UserName" and hits "Check Name" the server then resloves to the "somdomain.com.local".     - Moving Exchange SMTP Interface We currently have our Exchange cluster using isa 2000 for a proxy to get to the outside world. We have OWA configured on a front-end server as well. At present we have our old proxy with a physical nic on the outside and we have ISAServer 2004 configured for our web users. Our ASA forwards all the OWA traffic to the front-end server. We'd like to get rid of our old proxy server since right now it only handles our smtp traffic. We have an available interface on the ASA so I can assign the outside address to the interface without an issue. My question is what would be the best way to make the switch over?     - Owa 2007 internal and external access Hi, I have a new exchange 2007 installation. I need to have access via OWA both from internal and external. I have 1 CAS. Published on Isa 2006, used documentation from msexchange.org. Now I'm testing with an internal client but this only works when I disable the "require SSL" setting on the OWA website. But I had to enable this for the communication with the Isa server. What are the options? Do I have to install a second cas? Can I disable "require SSL" something else???     - SMTP Settings - Workaround for ISP Blocked Port I am trying to setup my Exchange Server 2003 on my server at my home office. My ISP (BellSouth) doesn't allow outgoing mail through port 25 that isn't through their server. My Web host uses port 587 for outgoing as an alternative port, but I cannot proxy through that port to send emails either.     - Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 uses all RAM until system needs a re I have a Windows 2008 Std Server installed with Exchange 2007 on it running Roll up 3. It has 4GB of RAM and 8GB page file. What happens is the memory usage just keeps going up over time (a day or two) then the transport service stops and the server needs a reboot to become functional again.     - Unable to Update Mailbox SD in the DS I'm getting two event warning on Exchnage 2007 application log Event ID:9554. I read this article from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555433. I was able to resolved one of them as I was able to determine the mailbox, however one of the other GUID did not return any object.     - Exchange 2003 SMTP session and Connections question Hi, We have Exchange Enterprise 2003 (with latest patches) on windows 2003 enterprise server. Our e-mails scanned thru Mail Marshall SMTP server, then transfered to exchange server. On exchange server, SMTP session, I see a lot of connection from Mail Marshall (about 750 connection), some connections are showing connected time as 90353 seconds, which is about 36hours. I know connection timeout on exchange server is set to 10minutes. Is this this normal, shouldn't all these connection be terminated already acoording to 10minute time out? Occasionaly, exchange stops receiving from Mail Marshall server, with no error or indication.     - Server 2003 Move Our company is having connectivity issues with the placement of our current server. We are attempting to move the server to a different location alltogether. I understand that our people will loose connectivity for a while, but I am more worried about not loosing any of our emails, website, or any other critical information.     - Out of Office.... Hello, We are running Exchange 03 with Outlook 03. My users can setup their own Out of Office messages with no problem. The out of office messages only work when sending emails to internal users. If a customer sends one of my users and email, they wont receive the user's out of office message. What am I missing?     - Autodiscover not working correctly In my organization we have 2 exch2k3 boxes which one acts as the front end and the other backend. We just incorporated exch2k7 using the same schema but running on server 2008. Now my issue is myself and 2 other IT personel updated out mail clients from outlook 2003 to outlook 2007.     - Exchange/Sharepoint on Server 2008 64bit Hi, I'm running Win2008 Standard 64bit. I installed Exchange 2007 SP1 64bit and then installed Sharepoint 2007 on the same server. This broke Exchange's OWA. I followed suggestions of many; MS 823265 is for Sharepoint 2 and 2007 doesn't have Excluded paths. In any case, I uninstalled CAS and reinstalled it. Now neither exchange nor sharepoint are functioning. I'm ready to wipe the server and start from scratch but i would like to know what steps are required to make Exchange and Sharepoint run on the same server.     - Help with setting up Recovery Storage Group on SBS 2003 Hi guys, I have a small business server 2003 (all apps in one box). I brought the Exchange server to SP2. Anyways i need to recover 1 mailbox and 2 emails from another mailbox on a NT backup files I have keep last year. I have followed this document from MS but i have it someone long and also a bit more too much information for me to disgest at this point when I have to get the emails out to the users. Creating the recovery restore group under System Manager 2. Move the restore database to D:\program files\exchsrvr\recovery restore group\ (edb and stm files) 3. Created the account for the Exmerge process and add appropriate rights to it What I need to know are the following: 1. can i mount the restore group while the production store is mounted? 2. Do i have to run a repair against the restore file (priv1.edb) before mounted the restore group? I've try running the "Eseutil.exe /p d:/program files/exchsrvr/recovery storage group/priv1.edb" to do the repair on the restored database but i kept getting an syntax error but I have try all different variations but NONE worked.     - ForestPrep and Domain Prep HI We have recently merged with another company and are in the process of integrating our Active Directories and Exchange Organizations. Both companies run windows server 2003 sp2 and Exchange server 2003 SP2 at the moment. We have created a child domain in the parent company into which we are going to migrate all the users from our company. We would like to instal a new Exchange 2007 server in the Child domain that has been created, for the mailboxes of our users. The question is where should ForestPrep and Domain Prep be run or do they not need to be run as there is already an exchange 2003 organization installed. Can they be ran just in the child domain or do they need to be run in the Root domain as well? Our parent compant are very reluctant to run anything in the root domain without weeks of testing and I am looking for assurance that running the ForestPrep and Domain Prep commands is unlikely to break anything. I'm planning an exchange 2007 installation in my organization.
Unfortunately actually we have an exchange 2003 on DC and we want to install
exchange 2007 on a different machine and plan a coexistence with Exchange
2003 and Exchange 2007 for some time.
When I'm running
setup.com /PrepareAD
on my DC (unfortunately with exchange 2003) there is an error:
"A previous version of Exchange Server is already installed on this
computer. Run Exchange 2007 Setup from a different computer or remove the
previous version of Exchange Server."
how can i proceed?

Run this on the server you are installing the Exchange 2007 on. It does not
have to run on the DC. It has to be able to contact the DC but it does not
have to run on the DC.
