IMF - installation
Thinking about installing imf on a front end/ backend exchange setup. Is it
possible to install imf on a system that has a 2003 exchange front end and a
2000 exchange backend. The webcast on imf says it shouldnt be installed on
2000 or a cluster. But i think both of these dont apply to my situation. Are
there any problems in doing so.

ADC removal
How do I delete an ADC that was installed on server that is no longer present?

test exchange server
I have a W2003 forest with 2 domains: DomainA and DomainB.
DomainA is our production environment and DomainB is our test domain. I am
trying to install Exchange 2003 Ent in our test domain. We already have
Exchange Ent installed and running in our production domain.
I installed Exchange in the test domain using "install exchange 2003 on
additional severs. I am under the impression that since my forest already has
an exchange server, this would be appropriate. I used domain prep in test
domain but did not do forestprep. During installation if i try to add
exchange messaging and collaboration services,I get the following:
The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services"
cannot be assigned the action "Install" because:
-To install the first Exchange server in a domain, or to run setup
in"/ForestPrep" mode, you must be an Exchange Full Administrator at the
organization level. you must use and account that has been granded the Full
Exchange Administrator Role on the Exchange organization using the Exchange
Administrative Delegation Wizard.
-You either do not have permissions to complete this operation or Active
Directory has not replicated all the necessary permissions for the deleted
items container. Please check that you have the necessary permissions to
modify Exchange components and that replication is complete before running
setup.
While using the ESM, I only see the Recipients and Tools containers. I do
not see Global Settings or Administrative groups.
What do i need to do to use this server?
Thanks for the help.

Creating Group Calendar in Exchange 2003 (SBS) - workaround
Hello, I'm new to Exchange 2003. I am setting up a Windows Small
Business 2003 server and require a group calendar. I've created a
folder in Public Folders however I see no way to specify it act as a
calendar. I've looked through documention and several books and I see
all kinds of third-party software that created calendars for you,
however I see no instructions as to how to setup a group calendar
nativley in Exchange 2003.
Can anyone lead me to a website that has exact instructions or forward
me a set of instructions as how to do this? Even a basic outline of
what to do would help as I can figure out the rest.
Thanks!
This may sound a little unorthodox but this is a solution I set up and
the company seemed to like it. They wanted group calendaring as well
and had small business server so wanted to use exchange. They all used
outlook for thier mail client. I set it up via Outlook Web Access. It
was a small company so I'm not sure if this will work for you. This is
what I did. I set up a user account called group calendar (gave it no
rights really), disabled the mail option (pop3 connector) and enabled
Outlook Web Access. I gave the domain group that needed access to it
rights to the mailbox to read and write. I then gave the clients the
url to connect to the calander (http://"exchange
domain"/exchange/"groupcalendar"/calendar). They were able to populate
it as if it were thier own and everyone that needed access to it and
was granted access used it and while minimized even popped up
reminders for them. They were happy and that worked for me. Like I
said, it may be a bit unorthodox but on the fly, it did the trick.
Hope that helps to give you maybe a different angle to look at. Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130578
Public folders
Hi all,
I am in the middle of upgrading Exchange 2000 to 2003. Everything is
smooth. I moved my mailbox to the new server. I can't see any public
folders. What is best practice for dealing with public folders? We are
moving users slowly so I can't cut all public folders from one server to the
new one. Can I make replicas and sync them and when I am fully cut over
delete the originals?

Exchange and Lotus Connector install
We are currently setting up a clustered Exhange 2003 server on Windows 2003
Server. Our current mail server is a Lotus Notes Domino server and we would
like to install Connector for Notes on it for migration however since it is
clustered we are not able to do this. Is there a way around this or
could/should we stop clustering the servers for the time being until we are
fully migrated and then rebuild the cluster? Would doing this cause any sort
of cluster instability?

NT4 PDC/Exch 5.5 upgrade to W/E2003
Hi,
Scenario:
NT4 PCD runnning Exchange 5.5, single domain/site.
New W2003 server, member of the NT4 domain, not yet upgraded to AD
Old desktop sitting in corner running NT4 as a BDC
Need to:
Ultimately have the new W2003 server run E2003 and be a DC.
Eventually remove the NT4 PDC and reload with W2003.
>From all that I've gathered, my large steps are:
1) Upgrade the current NT4 PDC to W2000 and AD.
2) Ensure DNS is working properly.
3) Install the ADC for replication between E5.5 and AD
4) DCPROMO the new W2003 server to DC in the new AD
5) Install E2003 into the existing E5.5 site.
6) Move mailboxes & public folders to the new E2003 installation.
7) Ensure everything is running correctly and follow the instructions
for rmeoving the last E5.5 server.
After all is running the W2000 machine would be removed from the domain
and reinstalled as a W2003 DC.
Anything I'm missing? I looked at articles, posts, and whitepapers
till my eyes bled...
Thanks a lot,

Ok. I have a problem with my ADC replication. In order to test

Exchange 2000 Server recovery procedures
Hi,
I'm writing an Exchange 2000 server recovery plan for my company and not
sure the following procedures are correct or not.
Situation: Partition (E:) holding the database files is down due to hardware
failure but the partition (D:) holding the transaction log files is
available.
Method A:
1. Restore the full backup performed last night but NOT "last backup set".
2. Copy the transaction log files (E*.log) into the temp folder and
overwrite temp files e.g. E:\First Storage Group\
3. Run ESEUTIL.EXE /CC to replay transactions.
4. Mount the stores to make them online.
Method B:
1. Keep the transaction log files (E*.log) in the original folder but delete
the edb.chk file
2. Restore the full backup performed last night and mark "last backup set".
3. Mount the stores to make them online.
I tried method B in a testing server succssfully but some transactions are
missing in the production server for the same approach. Method A works in
the production server but I'm not sure it can applied to all scenarios such
as alternative server restoration.
Could anyone point me which method is better and can ensure all transactions
can be replayed successfully?
Thanks in advance

Exchange 2003 SP1 Cross site mailbox moves - not working!
Hi,
I am running two Exchange 5.5 SP4 (&post SP4 rollup patch) sites on
Windows 2000 Server SP4.
This is operating in an AD 2003 functional level domain.
I have installed Windows Server 2003 SP1 on a new server and installed
the Exchange 2003 ADC SP1. Then installed Exchange 2003, then Exchange
2003 SP1.
I have two domains and the two exchange sites are in different domains.
Cross site mailbox moves do not work, there is no error, the option is
simply not there in Exchange tasks. It is for the intra site moves and
that works fine.
The account I am using is an enterprise admin and is a service account
admin for exchange 5.5 in both sites.
Any ideas??? I thought SP1 was capable of this!!
Thanks,

new hardware setup
we are planning to install exchange 2003 on new hardware and need some advice
on disk management and planning.
we have two raid controllers and 8 disks. after discussing with a few
consultants and friends here is the summary..
they all agreed on this- the first controller is setup as raid 1 with one
partition for the OS, Exchange install, and pagefile.
some suggested- first controller, raid 1, create 2 partitions, 1 for OS and
Exchange, 1 for pagefile.
then the second controller was varied..
1st 4 disks setup as raid10 for database, and last 2 disks as raid 1 for logs.
1st 4 disks setup as raid5 and 1 hotspare, last 2 raid 1 for logs
another suggestions was just setup 3 raid 1 arrays.
which one is more reasonable? and is it best to put the pagefile on the same
drives as the OS even though its a separate partition?
thanks. Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130543
Same address suffixes on two different exchange servers?
I'm currently running 1 exchange 2003 server, with 3 different mailbox
stores. Each store has it's own domain and suffix. I am now planning to add
additional servers into the other two domains and eventually move two of the
three stores to their respective domains.
My question is, can I install the new servers and a new mail store on it.
Then move one mailbox at a time as we visit users to change their Outlook
settings. So that as you're moving mailboxes, the suffix XYZ.com for
example, would be running from both servers. Jane.Doe@xyz.com on one server
and John.smith@xyz.com on the other server and both users would still get
their e-mail.
Or do I have to do the big bang theory and move the entire mail store from
one server to the other and change all the users Outlook settings to point to
the new mail server, at the same time?
I'm assuming you would set this up by having two seperate MX records one for
each server and the mail would then be routed based on those when the mail
hits the firewall, to find the correct mailbox? Please correct me if I'm
wrong.

Exchange 2003 outbound email are not working Please help?
We are in process of migrating from 5.5 to Exchange 2003. Right now we have
introduced a Exchange 2003 server to host email boxes, OWA server and one
Exchange 2003 box for SMTP. We are still in a Mixed Mode. We have tested new
exchange with few mail box transfer to new Exchange 2003 server and its
working fine.
Problm is with new Exchange 2003 SMTP box. If I shut down old 5.5 SMTP
server I can receive emails through new Exchange 2003 SMTPbox but I am not
able to SEND emails out. When I trun on the Old 5.5 SMTP server I can see all
the outboud email in Queue and its send emails after some time. I have
created MX records with ISP and within our DNS server also. I have opend Port
25 in Firewall. Can some give me some hint what should I check.
Another issue is that we have to host emails for another domain also in the
same exchange server. Our mail domain is 'company1.com. We want to host
emails for another domain 'company2.com also but only for few users. I think
in Mixed mode on Default Recepient Polcy works? Is there any way to configure
this in Mixed mode that we can host this domain emails for few selected users
only.

Exchange 2003 Setup Failed
I'm running setup for Exchange 2003 and it fails with the following message
during the part where it installs Microsoft Exchange Messaging and
Collaboration Service:
Setup failed while installing sub-component Site Replication Service with
error code 0x8007203A.
I'm trying to install Exchange 2003 in a mixed-mode Exchange 5.5 environment.
Any clue?

Single OWA URL for two servers
We have two exchange servers at two locations, which both operate fine via
https:/exchangeserver1/exchange and https:/exchangeserver2/exchange
internally.
When a user from exchangeserver2 starts up with internal URL
https:/exchangeserver1/exchange and logs in (forms based auth), their browser
is re-directed to https:/exchangeserver2/exchange and logs them in.
The problem I want to resolve is that I need to stop this re-direction to
the browser and essentially need exchangeserver1 to serve as a proxy through
to exchangeserver2.
The reason is that externally, we have proxy passthrough set up on our
existing production Apache web server and it works great for exchangeserver1
accounts (https://owa.mydomain.tld/exchange) , but if an exchangeserver2
account logs in, their broswer is redirected to the internal URL
(https://exchangeserver2/exchange), which is obviously never going to work.
A work around would be to set up two proxy pass through's on the Apache
side, but it's a kludgy solution for the users (set up a page that contains
link to the two proxy URLs) and requires a significant amount of routing and
firewall ruleset changes. I'd rather just proxy everything through
exchangeserver1 to take advantage of the internal networking infrastucucture
to exchangeserver2.
This cannot be a unique request...
TIA

Howto make OWA accessible over https?
Hi there!
I would like to make my Exchange-installation more secure so I enabled
"128bit ssl connection required".
If I now want to access exchange over the normal http:/... path I get the
information that I should try it with https:// of course.
However even on the same machine I can't reach exchange, it looks like no
one is listening on the https port.
Any ideas howto enable this, I already installed the Certificate-stuff.
Thank you in advance, lg John Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130512

Delivering received mail to unknown address to default mailbox
Is there any way to have exchange deliver email that is addressed to an
unknown email address to a default mailbox i.e. if someone addresses an email
and misspells the name then when it gets to our exchange server it will not
be recognised and is sent to a mailbox for a certain account. Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130507
email address not created when setup
I have finished migrating from 5.5 to 2000 by joining the 5.5 org with a 2000
server etc.
Now when I create a new account with an exchange account, the account is
created and I can logon to the domain with it, but the account has no email
address. By that I mean that the address field is blank.
The default policy shows that an address should be created.
Before I finished the migration, addresses were created in 5.5 then moved to
2000. Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130506
OWA and foreign languages
Hello,
We are using OWA on Exchange 2003. We have employees travelling to
Asia but are unable to logon to OWA. If the computer they are using is
in Chinese, they can see the logon form to enter their username and
password but can not go any further. Is there a setting in Exchange
that allows client access with computers using a foreign language?

Disable hard delete in Outlook
we need to recover some of the emails (from a particular date) from one of
our users.
The items that he sent to another user in our company.
We took the following steps.
1. gave ourselves permissions to the users mailbox. went through deleted
items. Nothing
2. since retention is set on the server to 30 days tried undeleting items.
Again nothing found from that day. but previous and following days yes.
3. If we assume that the user was smart enought to hard delete his items so
that
they wont be able to be undeleted what steps to we take to prevent this from
happening in the future
I've seem to read somewhere that there is a registry edit so that even if
user Shift-deletes the items
they are still go to deleted items.
4. We can't go to tape since it was done in the course of a single day
before the backups were made.
5. What else can we do to try and recover the items.
Thank you very much in advance for all the wonderful responses. Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130500
Making exchange so it doesn't make multiple copies of attachments
I think I read you could set it so exchange doesn't duplicate attachments.
We are running Exchange 2003. One person sent a 23MB attachment to everyone
in the company. As far as I know a copy went into every mailbox. Is there
a setting I need to check to make sure it doesn't turn a 23MB attachment
into 500MB of used exchange space?
Is there any disadvantage to not having it replicate?

Recipient Policies and X.400
We've recently upgraded from v5.5 to 2003. Somehow, somewhere, one of our
Tech's changed the default recipient policy and added all 8 domain names we
previously hosted on v5.5. The policy was then applied and now all of our
users have 10 (incl. two X.400) email addresses.
I know I don't have to remove them manually. Can anyone point me to a tool
that will help me do this quickly?
Also: now that we are in Native 2003 mode, do I still have to have X.400
addresses?
Thanks in advance. Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130497

Exchanges Server Capabilities
We are looking at moving our small business company to using exchange server
for our office and would like to know the following:
If we create a e-mail on a client's workstation, how can we get the e-mails
sent out as well as the e-mails received to be backed up. If possible we
would like e-mails to be assigned job numbers prior to be sent or received.
Please let me know if exhange can do this

Rerouting incoming mail by domain on Exchange 2003
Hello All,
I'm considering upgrading (finally) from Excahnge 5.5 where I currently host
both my web and mail services on one machine. Because I host a half dozen
domains on my server I've setup Exchange to reroute incoming mail according
to the destination domain.
Having recently setup a test server using both Windows Server and Exchange
Server 2003, I am unable to find a way to do this. Is there still a way to
host IIS and Exchange on the same server and still host multiple domains with
routing for e-mail? If so, how and what do I need to install or setup? Tag: Outlook 2000 compatability w/ Exchange 2003 Tag: 130492
Passing IMF SCL information between 2003 and 2000
Hi,
I am trying to get the SCL information to pass from my Exchange 2003 server,
that handles all of my inbound internet email, to my Exchange 2000 Server
that store a lot of my users mail boxes. The readme file at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/2/C/22CCB3FB-CE5F-4E23-810B-1A4AC5540C97/IntelligentMessageFilterReadmejune2004.htm
makes it sound like can work but I canâ??t find any information on the Exch50
blob and how it is configured.
Can anyone help me configure the Exchange 2003 and 2000 Servers to pass the
SCL ?

Mailbox Rights -- Outlook Delegates????
We are migrating our users to Exchange 2003 form Exchange 5.5. Some of our
Executives have secretaries that edit their calendars, contacts, and even
monitor their inboxes.
Is there some document that tells what permissions are needed on the
Exchange "Mailbox Rights" or the Outlook Delegates.
