The Windows 2000 server with Exchange 5.5 on it had
hardware failure that hosed the OS. I have a current
Windows Backup of the Exchange data.

We are building a new server with Exchange 2003 on it. Is
there a way I can load the Windows Backup file into
Exchange 2003 and save all the users mail?

If not, can you wonderful people suggest my next best
options?

Thank you in advance.

You cannot restore the Exchange 5.5 databases to a Windows 2003 server. You
will need to deploy a new Exchange 5.5 server with the same settings and
restore the Information Store databases to it. Once you have it back up and
running, there are many ways to migrate to Exchange 2003. If you want
something easy, then you can use the Exmerge method. Here is a quick
run-through.

-Install Exchange 5.5 and create a new ORG and give it the same ORG and SITE
names that you had before.
-Be sure to bring the server up to the same service pack lvls and hotfixed
lvls as you where at when you made the online backups.
-Now you need to restore the Information Store databases. (do not restore
the directory)
-Once the databases are mounted, you need to perform a DS/IS to re-create
the new mailbox objects back in the new directory.
-Once you have the DS/IS complete, and you can see your recipients in the
recipients container, you just need to Exmerge the data out to .pst files so
that you can move it into Exchange 2003.
-Once you have the data exported to .pst files, then you would install your
Exchange 2003 server and get it prepared for the import of the data.

You are basically getting the data out of the 5.5 database and into
something you can import the data into Exchange 2003 from. This is part of
the Exmerge migration method.

You can also just reinstall Exchange 5.5 and restore the DS and IS both and
get it back up and running like it was before it crashed. Once you do this,
you can use the Migration Wizard for a "Interorg Migration." However, if
you take the time to do this, then you might as well do a typical "Move
mailbox" migration and install the Exchange 2003 Server into the same site
as the the recovered 5.5 server.

There are lots of ways, you just have to find the best one for your
Organization that fits the time frame you need to accomplish this task in.

Good luck!

I don't normally recommend software but, Aelita Recovery Manager (ARM) for
Exchange may help http://www.aelita.com/products/armex.htm you are supposed
to be able to recover mail directly from tape without having to do a
restore. You can restore a mailbox to a .pst file, then use Exmerge to
import the .pst file to the mailbox on your new server.
