Installed new Win 2003 server into an active directory domain. Still have 1 nt4 exchange 5.5 server. Will be using the move mailbox method to migrate users to Exchange 2003 on the new server then remove the 5.5 server from the site
What will happen to client rules. Lots of our users have rules setup in their mailboxes for various reasons. Also what will happen to permissions on Public folders
Lastly I have conflicting information about distribution lists. Do they migrate properly
thank

So long as you are deploying ADC and using the move mailbox method your
client rules should move forward when you move the mailboxes.

Distribution lists should migrate properly as well. ADC will replicate the
DL membership to a group in the Active Directory.

Since you are maintaining a single organization with the move mailbox, when
you move the public folders from 5.5 server to the Exchange 2003 server your
permissions should stay intact as well. As long as you follow the advice of
the ADCTools, and have a native mode domain as the default destination then
any Public folder permissions with a DL, will cause the Distribution group
in the AD to upgraded to Universal Security group and your permissions
should be fine.

"have a native mode domain as the default destination"

do you mean win2k3 native mode? does it mean no more nt4.0 bdc?

in my experience, most of my clients have a nt4.0 bdc during the ad and exch
upgrade. they don't want to cut off nt4.0 completely until the ad and
exch2k3 are working fine.

thanks

One domain in your Forest should be Win2k Native Mode (or W2k3 Native Mode).
This means no more nt4 BDCs in a domain and hitting the windows switch.

This is necessary for Store to use Universal groups as permissions in Public
Folders. See KB
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;274046&Product=exch2003

You can proceed with the domain in mixed mode realizing that there may be
problems with the public folder ACLs. These are logged to the application
log by the Store Service. The problems would appear as Exchange Clients
either access resources they should be denied in the public folders, or
failing to access public folder resources that they have permissions from
the group.
